SCRIPTURE INSIGHT “Woe to the complacent,:” shouts the prophet Amos in the First Reading. Indifference to the needs and plight of those around us challenges the prophet Amos and Jesus in today’s readings. Luke tells the parable in the Gospel in three scenes. In the first, a contrast is drawn between the sumptuous lifestyle of the rich man (who re-mains unnamed) and the poor man (named Laza-rus covered with sores and lying at the entrance to the rich man’s estate. There Lazarus dies, forgot-ten, with no mention of burial. The rich man also dies and is buried. The next scene takes place in the afterlife, where the roles are reversed and Lazarus is with Abra-ham while the rich man is in torment. In the final scene, the rich man begs that his brothers be warned about their fate for overlooking the poor. Like the rich man and his brothers, we have the teachings of Scripture, but we also have the exam-ple from this parable and more importantly that of Christ, to remind us of our responsibility to care for the needs of others. Christians can never be indifferent to the needs of and injustices done to others. Pope Paul VI said in Populorum progres-sio, 23, “It is well known how strong were the words used by the Fathers of the Church to de-scribe the proper attitude of persons who possess anything towards persons in need. To quote St. Ambrose: ‘You are not making a gift of your pos-sessions to the poor person. You are handing over to him what is his. For want has been given in common for the use of all, you have abrogated to yourself.” ♦ Why do you think that the poor man is named

but not the rich man? ♦ Why do we have a responsibility to help those

who are in need? ♦ How has your life been touched or changed

when you have responded to someone in need?

OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.

We come to you,

Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence,

murder and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of

Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to

be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady

of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.

National Priesthood Sunday Prayer for Priests:

Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our priests. Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments. Help our priests to be strong in their vocation. Set their souls on fire with love for your people. Grant them the wisdom, understanding and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Inspire them with the vision of your King-dom. Give them the words they need to spread the Gos-pel. Allow them to experience joy in their minis-try. Help them to become instruments of your divine grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen.

ATTENTION:

Adult Faith Formation: The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy: Participate with other adults in reading and under-standing the messages of the Prophets in the Bible. During the liturgical year we hear from the proph-ets in the readings. This week we hear form one of the prophets, he is often referred to as “the prophet of justice.” The messages are certainly relevant in our world today. This is a study that will draw you closer to Christ. The prophets afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repent-ance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to Christ. When: Monday at 6:00 p.m., September 30th-November 25, 2019; Where: Parish Ujima Center, 1019 N. Prieur Street; How: Video Presentation by Biblical Scholars; Reading from the Bible and the Prophets workbook; Small Group Discussion and review of responses.

BIBLE STUDY QUOTE: Can you hear me now? One way to live in God’s presence is to recognize God’s voice when He speaks. This pop-ular advertisement for a well-known cellular phone carrier asks a similar question that appeals to our basic need to hear the voice of others. When we are trying desperately to communicate with someone we might say, “Can you hear me now?” The cellular phone and service providers industries can measure their success by how well they address the needs of the public to be heard by others. In the same way, our spiritual success is dependent on our attention to the Word of God. Our salvation depends on whether we hear the voice of God clearly enough to keep His com-mandments and respond to the needs of others. We should listen for God’s voice in everything we do. It would be tragic indeed to end our lives and as we stand before the seat of judgment and hear God say”: “Can you hear me now?

ANNOUNCEMENT… Ministerial Council will meet on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ujima Center. Pastoral Council will meet on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Office.

St. Peter Claver Church Health & Wellness Ministry

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Ovarian cancer often goes undetected until it has spread within the pelvis and abdomen. At this late stage, ovarian cancer is more difficult to treat and is frequently fatal. Early-stage ovar ian can-cer, in which the disease is confined to the ovary, is more likely to be treated successfully. Early-stage ovar ian cancer rarely causes any symp-toms. Advanced-stage ovar ian cancer may cause few and nonspecific symptoms that are often mis-taken for more common benign conditions, such as constipation or irritable bowel. Signs and symp-toms of ovar ian cancer may include: 1. Ab-dominal bloating or swelling; 2. Quickly feeling full when eating; 3. Weight loss; 4. Discomfort in the pelvis area; 5. Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation; 6. A frequent need to urinate. While ovarian cancer may occur at any age it is most common in women ages 50 to 60 years old. Ovarian caner is diagnosed through several ways: Pelvic Exam (to feel the size of the uterus and ovaries) Imaging (CAT Scan or ultrasound of the pelvis and abdomen) Blood Test (CA125 which detects a protein found on the surface of ovarian cancer cells) Surgery (to remove a tissue sample and abdominal fluid to confirm a diagnosis of ovarian cancer).

If you have any of the above signs and symp-toms please see your healthcare provider.

Need more information about Ovarian Cancer call the Health & Wellness Ministry located in the Misaada Center.
