I am strongly committed to supporting our colleagues and peers in the Victorian Government School System. In term one I acted as a Challenge Partner for Northcote High School with their Strategic Review. I had also served in this role four years ago with the previous Principal. Over the two days of the Review I was able to share some of Balwyn’s practices, leadership decisions and strategies. But equally I learnt much from another high performing school which is committed to quality outcomes for their students and staff. These Reviews are incredibly empowering for school communities and the participants. I am extremely grateful to have been approached to play a part with Northcote and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I am equally proud to open up our school to interstate and international visiting delegations who are recommended to spend time at Balwyn High School to experience such a high performing, reflective and driven school community. I am always keen also for our leaders, staff and students to learn from others and with this in mind I hosted an Instructional Round on Friday 17 May with Principals and Leading Teachers/Learning Specialists from Blackburn High School, Kew High School, Swinburne Senior Secondary College and Vermont Secondary College. Our five schools work together as part of a North East Victoria (NEV) Region program. With 24 visitors and 15 of our own staff, Judy Petch, Education Consultant, facilitated classroom observations of 72 classes across all Year levels, learning areas, and elective offerings. Our focus – the role of the teacher and the student in the learning process – gave rise to wonderful discussions amongst the teams following our time in the classes. Indeed our school campus and wonderful facilities looked magnificent, but much more importantly it was the quality of the teaching and learning in each classroom that made the biggest impression on our visitors. As a result of the Round we now have further confirmation of our priorities for instructional practice and staff professional learning, and the next level of work to ensure that every student in every classroom experiences success and continues to thrive. Following the Round I received a card of thanks from Joanna Alexander, Principal of Blackburn High School: Dear Deborah On behalf of Blackburn High School I would like to acknowledge you and the Balwyn High School staff for hosting the Instructional Round PD on Friday 17 May. It was very generous and courageous to open up your classrooms. We were inspired and encouraged to take the next steps in our journey towards developing a new observational model for our school. Principals’ PerspectiveI sincerely thank Judy Petch for her expert facilitation, my dedicated Assistant Principals and Leading Teachers, members of my Leadership Development Program and the Educational Support staff who supported me throughout the planning and implementation of the Round. It was a great day of learning for Balwyn High School and our counterparts, and it reflected once again our generosity and inclusiveness as a proud school community.

Lastly, I am very excited for Josie Millard, one of our Assistant Principals, who has also been approached by NEV Region to work with them over two weeks in mid June. Josie will be working with a School Improvement team within the Region and will present and share our VCE practices and strategies to a range of schools. Balwyn High School is recognised for our consistently strong VCE results, but most importantly we are committed to always looking to improve across all studies. Josie will be a fantastic support to these school communities and will be a wonderful ambassador for Balwyn High School. Congratulations Josie!

School Uniform – A School Community ResponsibilityBalwyn High School is an excellent school and all students should be proud to be a member of the Balwyn High School community. Being a member of our school community does entail having rights and responsibilities and these cover more than just the academic area. A wider responsibility is for students is to wear the school’s winter uniform proudly. Parents have a responsibility of ensuring their son/daughter maintains the culture of wearing the Balwyn High School uniform correctly and proudly every day. Uniform can be obtained from either the school’s second-hand uniform shop which is open every Thursday from 3 pm or Bob Stewart’s of Kew. Let’s have ‘uniform uniform’.

Year 10 Work ExperienceMost of our Year 10 students have finalised their arrangements for work experience which they will be undertaking in the last week of Term 2 from 24 June. Work Experience is a very popular activity amongst our students and provides them with experience and information that they will draw upon as they begin to make decisions about what they will study in VCE and consider their post secondary school pathways. During the week of work experience students will be visited by a Year 10 teacher in their workplace. Teachers enjoy these visits as they get to see some of the students they teach within a workplace setting which is a totally different environment than they typically interact with their students.

    Senior School Report

    Julien EscuratDirector of Senior School

Year 10 and Unit 1 ExaminationsSemester 1 examinations for students in Years 10 and VCE Unit 1 have commenced this week on Monday 27 May and will run until Friday 7 June. Examinations are undertaken for the purpose of establishing levels of student performance over the entire semester’s work. They enable students to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding across the subject content. Year 10 and VCE Unit 1 examinations are an important aspect of a holistic education. They facilitate the development of effective preparation and study skills as well as preparing students for future state-wide examinations such as VCE examinations. All students have been notified via Compass and email of the timetable and instructions for the completion of their examinations. Please ensure that students attend each examination punctually in full school uniform. It is normal (and beneficial) for students to experience some anxiety as they prepare for examinations. Balwyn High School provides an examination experience as close as possible to the VCAA experience in order to assist students in learning to manage normal examination stress well. If parents feel that students need further assistance in managing examination stress, please contact the relevant Year level Student Learning and Wellbeing Managers.

Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) General Achievement Test (GAT)All students studying any Unit 3 subject will be required to complete the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Wednesday 12 June. The GAT is a three-hour examination, with 15 minutes reading time, commencing at 10.00am and concluding at 1.15pm. It is conducted at Balwyn High School by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) according to their examination guidelines. It is a public examination that is undertaken by all VCE students across Victoria and abroad. For many students, this will be their first experience of a public examination and they should familiarise themselves with the formal procedures. Please note that there will be no Senior School classes scheduled on this day. Further arrangements for Senior School students have also been posted on the Compass Newsfeed.

The Year 11 FormalTicket sales for the Year 11 Formal will open in June via Trybooking and students will be informed of the booking details. The Year 11 Formal is one of the biggest social events of the year in the Senior School and one which students look forward to with much anticipation.

    Middle School Report

    Andy SmithDirector of Middle School

Assessment is an important and necessary part of the school experience for students, teachers and parents alike. For instance, NAPLAN testing has just finished for all Year 7 and Year 9 students. Under test conditions student completed language conventions and writing tasks, reading tasks and numeracy tasks over three days. Students should be congratulated for their dedication and commitment to the different tasks through the week. The NAPLAN results provide a valuable source of information about student’s numeracy and literacy skills that impact the planning teachers undergo when differentiating work. NAPLAN results are also taken into consideration when planning whole-school initiatives including the recent focus on writing skills at all Year levels.

This year, for the first time, we are introducing a self-reflection task as one of our three Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) at Year 7. As this type of assessment has quite a different focus we have asked the Director of Pedagogy – Tegan Knuckey to provide her thoughts on this task and why it is an important part of our overall assessment approach at Year 7.

The Importance of Self-ReflectionResearch indicates that it is important for students to think about their own thinking or engage in metacognition. Through metacognition students are able to reflect on the way they have approached their learning, the thinking involved and the strategies they are employing. When they become more aware of how they think, they can understand more about how they learn. This can lead to increased motivation and persistence to take on challenging tasks. One way that we are supporting our Year 7 students to improve their metacognition is by having them engage in a range of self-reflection tasks that focus on the skills associated with the Victorian Curriculum (VC) Capabilities. The VC Capabilities include: Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social, Ethical, and Intercultural. Improving skills in the Capability areas is important because these Capabilities encompass the 21st Century Skills that we endeavor to build in our students.

When a Year 7 student completes their ‘CAT 3: Self-reflection on a Capability’ in one of the learning areas below, we encourage you to have a conversation with them about their key strengths, as well as their areas for improvement.

    • Music• Visual Art and Design• Science• Humanities• Health and Physical Education

As with all assessment tasks, this is a rigorous task and we expect that the students will benefit significantly from it as it will allow them to set their own improvement goals for next semester.

Student Services News - A Thought from Student ServicesExamination StressExamination time can be a stressful time. However, stress is not always a “bad” thing. Stress is a normal human response that we all experience when faced with a challenge. If we can think about stress as our friend, trying to point us in the right direction and get us motivated, often we will find this will help change our experience and lead to us feeling less overwhelmed.

If you are feeling stressed, use the below steps to help you rise to the challenge, so that you no longer feel stuck and overwhelmed:

Five Steps to Prepare for ExaminationsGet OrganisedSet yourself up with a clean and tidy space to study. Preferably somewhere quiet. Remove distractions and make sure you have everything you need to study effectively in arm’s reach.

20-Minute Study RuleNo one can study for six hours straight and be effective. Break up your time into twenty-minute chunks for the most effective use of your brain.

Find What Works for YouExplore what style of studying works best for you. You might learn best by drawing pictures and diagrams, making up songs with matching dances, sharing your learnings out loud with family and friends, or you might learn by simply writing things down.

Breaks = Good, Constant Distraction = BadTaking planned and timed breaks will help you remain on task, but checking your social every 5 minutes is a sure-fire study fail. Research shows that it can take up to twenty minutes to refocus on your task once you’ve been distracted.

Sleep is Your FriendIf you get a good night’s sleep before your examination, you are scientifically proven to retain more of what you studied the day before than if you stay up crazy late.

NewsSTEP Program The STEP program is a program where Year 10 students apply and are elected to help the Year 7’s have a smooth and comfortable transition into high school. During the last week of Term 1, we had a First STEP’s celebration. During this event, the Year 7’s, in their tutorial classes, came down to the sports field and participated in a series of fun team-building games and activities, such as trivia, puzzles and egg and spoon races, led by the STEP leaders. Through problem solving, fast decision making and enjoying each other’s company, this event has built a stronger relationship within the Year 7 classes, as well as a stronger relationship with their STEP leaders.

Being a STEP leader, especially while leading these activities, has taught me a lot of valuable skills. Skills such as patience, the best way of communicating effectively with your group and being adaptable when something happens that is not planned.

Being a part of the STEP program is truly a rewarding and fulfilling experience. Stephanie Spanos

AINGER Peck Public Speaking Award 2019It was flattering to progress to the final of the AINGER Peck Public Speaking Award 2019, which was held on 20 May at the luxurious Amora Hotel Riverwalk, Richmond, followed by a two course dinner with a speaking element and 120 audience members. It was such a delight to have our Principal, Ms Harman and our two Public Speaking liaison teachers, Ms Gibson and Mr Land accompanying me over the evening. Although I was unable to bring home the trophy, it was a humbling experience to compete with some of Victoria’s best orators and to take the podium and stir the audience with my speech on ‘Dare to Dream’.

With each Public Speaking competition that Balwyn High School has trusted me to represent, it has always kept me pushing forward and has constantly taken my public speaking skills to the next level. From the various oratory competitions at Regional, State and National levels, I have learnt that it is true what they say about public speaking: it is ‘What has stood us in good stead – or the contrary, has gotten in the way for us’. There will be times when we might have given an impactful speech without breaking a sweat up on stage, yet it’s not enough as not every audience is going to love us and not every speech is going to be a success. To be a better speaker, we need to take successes in stride without becoming overly confident and have the ability to bounce back with confidence and self-belief after a setback. In closing, I am appreciative of all the internal and external Public Speaking opportunities I have had from the Balwyn High School Public Speaking Club as my oratory skills has improved tremendously through practice and feedback. I would like to thank Ms Ward who went the extra mile to work with me tirelessly throughout this competition.

Year 11 Health and Human Development - Baby Clothes Wanted!During Term 3, Year 11 Health and Human Development students will be participating in an exciting project. As part of the curriculum, students will be learning about the responsibilities associated with becoming a parent. In order to enhance their learning, they will participate in a parenting simulation project which involves caring for a lifelike, electronic parenting manikin (baby).

In order to successfully care for the baby, we are in need of some baby clothes. If you have any old baby clothes, it would be greatly appreciated if you are able to donate the clothes to help support the project. Clothes can be donated via the main reception or delivered by your son/daughter to the Sport Office.

Thank you in advance for your support.

My name is Nenah Jones and I am playing the character Hope Harcourt who is a debutant engaged to a wealthy Englishman, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. She is willing to sacrifice love, and marry to satisfy her mother’s wishes. Her mother, Evangeline Harcourt, is over-bearing and is mainly concerned with money and social status. Hope on the other hand has a sweet personality with a strong sense of morals and duties. She also has a sense of humor and is mischievous at times. Billy Crocker who is in love with Hope is trying to prevent Hope’s marriage. Hope has similar feelings towards Billy, but has not the confidence to admit it. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the cast so far and I am looking forward to three great performances!

    Nenah Jones - Hope Harcourt

From the mean streets of New York City comes Moonface Martin. The dreaded ‘Public Enemy No. 13’. A notorious gangster and con man who struggles between his want to get out of the gangster life and his addiction to the reputation that comes with the said gangster life. This comic relief goes through the show dodging metaphorical bullets and tricking the passengers of the S.S. American alongside his partner in crime, Erma. He may not have the smarts nor the intimidation of a gangster but, at heart, Moonface Martin is a decent human being who tries his absolute best to help Billy fall in love with the girl of his dreams. This show has been a real treat. The cast has an immense amount of talent. The likes of which I value and adore. As rehearsals continue along, I get to see so much energy, dedication and zeal from this cast. Our rehearsals under the direction of Ms Heath, Mr Bartalotta and Mr Anderson have had a plethora of creativity, vibrancy and fun. Needless to say, this show will be a brilliant way to finish my theatre life at Balwyn High School.

Importantly though, the concert allows students from smaller music programs the chance to play in ensembles with a full instrumentation, something that cannot always occur at a performance level that is challenging individually. Some ensembles had three rehearsals prior to the concert, others just two. The concert also allows time for students to interact together away from the rehearsal room which is something that time does not always permit during a regular rehearsal.

Congratulations to David Wang Year 11 who played percussion in the Symphonic Band.

Winter Concerts Term 3We invite the school community, and encourage families and friends to bring along guests, to enjoy an evening of fine music at the 2019 Winter Concerts. This concert series showcases the comprehensive range of ensembles available within the music program, which provide students with the opportunity to extend and enrich their music journey. Each concert evening will include an award presentation to our Year 12 music students to recognise their commitment and contribution to the music program over their time at Balwyn High School.

The Winter Concerts ensemble performance program consists of four concerts over two evenings. Due to the popularity of this event, we recommend that you book early, as we cannot guarantee that tickets will be available at the door. All concerts will commence promptly. If you arrive late, you may need to wait, until a break between items for an usher to allow you to enter the theatre.

Mathematics/ScienceExcursion to the Zoo!On Monday 6 May and Thursday 9 May, Year 7 students attended the Zoo excursion in order to support the work that they have been completing in class across a range of subjects. Students were able to discover new and exciting things about conservation strategies for Science, consider enclosures for an upcoming Mathematics unit, learn about the history of the zoo for Humanities and complete drawings for Art. This supplemented learning that students have completed in English around persuasive speeches regarding the impact of zoos.

Science Task excerpt:‘Don’t Palm Us Off’ is the cause at Melbourne Zoo that supports animals including the Asian elephant. This campaign supports animals in habitat loss and the way they are trying to stop it is to fix palm oil. Now, palm oil is not the actual problem, the way the palm oil is produced is the problem and the way we are producing it is causing that habitat loss. The Melbourne Zoo campaign is trying to get big and small brands of food to start labelling their products properly. At the moment, products with palm oil in them are hiding it as different things such as ‘vegetable oil’ which is leading people to think that nothing is wrong with it. If the products were labelled clearly, people may start to stop buying those products and picking more sustainable options.

Olivia D’Alessando 7KEnglish Task excerpt:Hello, today I will be talking about my topic - Do zoos improve the lives of animals? I very strongly disagree with the notion that zoos improve the lives of animals. There are three reasons on why I believe so, 1) they have restricted freedom and are cruelly treated, 2) their mental and physical health gets affected and 3) it is very hard for them to go back into the wild.

You may think that an animal’s enclosure is very big but it is not big enough. What if you were not allowed to go out of your house for the rest of your life? That wouldn’t be too fun but it is what animals in the zoos go through.

Winter is coming… STEAM. On Thursday 16 May, the STEAM club along with the STEAM team, held an event to celebrate the release of the 8th season of Game of Thrones. The event consisted of using dry ice or frozen CO2. Several interactive experiments were conducted with dry ice; some included detergent bubbles, elephant toothpaste and balloons blown from sublimating dry ice. We saw an abundance of enthusiastic students especially in the Years 7 -9, who were very intrigued by the frosty phenomena.

The STEAM club wishes to provide our school community future opportunities to attend events such as the one today. Keep watch on Compass Newsfeed to know when our next event is!

Sport Men’s Netball Is Shooting Goals! At the start of Term 3, a number of our boys’ netball teams will be playing in the Division Boys’ Netball competition. The teams are about to start training under the guidance of a number of our experienced and enthusiastic girl netball players.

With this in mind, it is an excellent time to highlight three Balwyn Men who are continuing to perform extremely well playing high level Netball.

Over Easter 2019, the 35th Australian Men’s & Mixed National Championships were held at Casey Stadium, Victoria.

Two former Balwyn students, Kyele Heagney (Class of 2018) & Hadley Dixon (Class of 2017) were members of the Victorian 20 & Under team who were crowned National Champions after defeating the Queensland 20 & Under team 58 – 33.

Kyele Heagney was also a joint winner of the Tournament MVP for the 20 & Under division. This is the second time he has won Tournament MVP in the last three National Carnivals.

Both Kyele and Hadley were also selected into the Australian 20 & Under team, which will travel to New Zealand later this year and compete in the New Zealand Men’s Nationals.

A current member of staff, Rein Kivivali who is the Learning Environments Technical Support manager, also played for Victoria in these Championships. His team in the Open Age Reserves also won their section of the Championships defeating Queensland 55-39.

Men’s Netball and Mixed Netball is going from strength to strength, and as you can see from the successes mentioned above, there is a clear pathway to playing representative Netball at the highest level.

Well done Rein, Kyele and Hadley and best wishes to the teams playing in the boys Division competition.
