VISIONSFall 2012

Annual Report

We are excited to announce this year’s Annual Campaign projects: In order to make the student netbook computers even more beneficial, we are seeking to purchase teacher software that will expand the use of the netbooks in the classroom.

The second project is a Career Education Internship Program designed to provide students on the school-to-work path with real-world skills and experience. Coe-Brown’s curriculum has always included vocational courses such as automotive, welding and forestry, but we want to target non-traditional learners and help them pursue work experience as part of their core coursework. This program is designed to keep students in school and give them the tools they need to succeed in the work force.

If the Career Education Internship Program is successful and we can sustain the funding in our budget, we hope to offer this opportunity to our students every year. The internship program will integrate students’ academic and work-based learning experiences. If we are successful in raising the necessary funds, we plan to hire a part-time director to oversee and coordinate this program. The program will be launched in the 2013-2014 academic year.

Your donation to the Annual Campaign also supports the grant program that is made available to CBNA faculty and staff each year to help expand existing programs. These grants cover the areas of Academics, Administration, Arts, Athletics and Vocational Education. Your gift is tax deductible and supports Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s ongoing commitment to the education of its students.

In addition to checks, we offer PayPal as an additional payment option. You can find a link to PayPal on the CBNA web site, www.coebrown.org, under the Alumni/Annual Appeal heading, or on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/coebrown.

The Annual Campaign closes June 30, 2013. Please make checks payable to CBNA Development and send to 907 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood NH 03261. Thank you, alumni and friends of the Academy!

Note: In order to benefit the Academy and its students, donations must be made payable to CBNA Development. Donations to the Academy’s Visions Annual Campaign are acknowledged with a letter for tax purposes and are listed each fall in the Visions Annual Report. Gifts made to other organizations, such as the CBNA Alumni Association, are not received by the Academy, do not support the Visions Annual Campaign and are not included in the Annual Report.

We conducted a mini-phonathon in October to kick off the 2012-2013 Visions Annual Campaign. Our student volunteers contacted about 150 of our loyal supporters via telephone and welcomed the opportunity to connect with alumni. We’ll be reaching out to the rest of our alumni donors in the spring and hope you’ll take a moment to speak with our student callers and support the Visions Annual Campaign!

Fall Phonathon volunteers included junior class officers (back row) Domenica DeLuca, Connor Bell (front row), Regan Butler and Sam Fortier.

Thank you for your suPPorT!

2 Visions — Fall 2012

Dear Friends,

The 2012-2013 academic year is off to a great start. In our freshman class of 197 students there are seven sets of twins. This has to be a first!

We are pleased to announce the addition of several new staff members.

Michael LaChance joins the CBNA faculty as a teacher in the areas of automotive, welding, power and energy and capstone. Mr. LaChance has 20 years’ experience in the automotive industry which includes Master Technician Status with SAAB and Toyota and ASE Certifications.

Amanda Morales joins the CBNA staff as a teacher in the area of Family and Consumer Studies, and will advise Coe-Brown’s chapter of FCCLA. Mrs. Morales attended the University of New Hampshire and has five years’ experience working with students.

Amy Usinger is the newest member of CBNA’s English department and comes to CBNA with six years’ experience. Mrs. Usinger is teaching 11th and 12th grade English as well as Freshman Orientation classes. She attended Plymouth State University and Franklin Pierce

College and is currently working on her Master’s Degree at the University of New Hampshire.

The Athletic Committee of the CBNA Board of Trustees will announce the first inductee(s) into the Coe-Brown Athletic Hall of Fame at the annual alumni basketball game in December. We hope you will join us for this exciting event. This honor will be bestowed on individuals who have had a significant and lasting impact on Coe-Brown Northwood Academy through their involvement in the athletic program.

This year’s Annual Campaign is under way and the project we have identified is innovative and compelling. Coe-Brown is developing a Career Education Internship Program designed to provide students on the school-to-work path with real-world skills and experience. Coe-Brown’s curriculum has always included vocational courses such as automotive, welding and forestry, but we have never targeted non-traditional learners and helped them pursue work experience as part of their core coursework. Obtaining a job without at least a high school diploma is nearly impossible in today’s economy; this program is designed to keep students in school and give them the tools they need to succeed in the work force.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy as we seek to fulfill our mission of producing graduates who are academically and socially prepared to be responsible, caring and contributing members of the global society.

Sincerely,

David S. Smith

A Letter from HEADMASTER SMITHThe CBNA Development and Community Outreach Office

facilitates interaction between the Academy and its alumni, parents and friends. The Academy depends on the generous support of all our constituents in order to meet our goals. There are many different ways you can contribute to the Academy. For more information contact:

Making a gift to Coe-Brown Northwood Academy

The simplest way to give is by making a donation to our Annual Campaign. Each year your generous donations help to fund projects not covered by tuition. You can donate on line (www.coebrown.org) using PayPal, or by writing a check. If you wish to mail a check, send it to CBNA Development, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, 907 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood, NH 03261.

Matching GiftsMore than 1,000 companies offer matching gift programs

and many provide this benefit to spouses/partners and to retired employees. Most corporate matching gifts are unrestricted and substantially increase the value of the individual’s gift. Check with the human resources office at your company to obtain a matching gift form. Complete and mail the form to CBNA Development, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, 907 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood, NH 03261.

EventsCoe-Brown hosts a golf tournament each year to raise money

for the Academy’s endowment fund. It is held the second Saturday in June at Nippo Lake Golf Club in Barrington. The CBNA Paul Guptill ’52 Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament is a great way to reconnect with old friends or to meet new ones, all to benefit the students at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. Sponsorships are available and raffle items gratefully accepted. Contact: [email protected].

BequestsBequests are an important source of annual support and

give schools the opportunity to build endowment for the future. This kind of gift is a powerful way to help shape the future of a beloved institution with a larger gift than one could make in his or her lifetime. Your bequest may be for a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or part or all of the residue of your estate after other specific bequests have been paid. The Development Office will be happy to discuss options with you, although all arrangements should be made through your attorney or another professional advisor. Please call 603-942-5531, ext. 186, for more information.

Welcome to the Development and Community Outreach Office!

Coming in December!

Sample Bequest Language: Outright Bequests

An outright bequest is the simplest way to make a gift through your will. “I give Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, Northwood, New Hampshire, _______ dollars.” Or “I give Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, Northwood, New Hampshire, ______ percent (_____%) of my estate.”

Residual BequestsAfter your loved ones and beneficiaries receive a designated

portion of your estate, the remainder of the estate would be left to the Academy. “All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate I give to Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, Northwood, New Hampshire.”

Contingent BequestsThe contingent bequest will benefit Coe-Brown only if the

named beneficiaries predecease you. “I give, devise and bequeath to ___________, the sum of ____dollars. In the event s/he shall predecease me, I direct this sum be paid to Coe-Brown Northwood Academy in Northwood, New Hampshire.”

Naming OpportunitiesMany donors give to Coe-Brown in the name of a loved one.

Major gifts of $10,000 or more can be given to provide financial support for a particular program and/or to name a particular space. There are many choices and options. The Development Office will be happy to work with you to structure a gift that will accomplish your goals. Please call 603-942-5531, ext. 186.

In-Kind ContributionsCoe-Brown Northwood Academy benefits from services offered

as a contribution that would otherwise cost the Academy money. For example, Coe-Brown’s Wall of Remembrance in the Dining Center was recently completed with tile and carpentry work donated by community members. Printing services, photographic, legal, architectural, engineering, financial—any professional service can be a tremendous source of support for Coe-Brown. Please contact the Headmaster at 603-942-5531, ext. 102, if you think you may be able to contribute professional services. Gifts of equipment and materials (for example, a camera for the photography program, a tractor for the forestry program or a car for the automotive program) are often welcome. Contact the Development Office at 603-942-5531, ext. 186 to discuss your gift in kind.

Please see the information on the inside front cover of this issue about our new Affinity Program with TD Bank. This is a great way for you to support Coe-Brown Northwood Academy!

4 Visions — Fall 2012

In the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 issues of Visions we reported on some of the incredible successes of our FFA program over the past year. In particular, we are extremely proud of CBNA faculty member and FFA advisor Sarah Ward ’83, who received the Honorary American Degree Teacher Award at the 2011 National FFA Convention. Mrs. Ward is also the 2007 recipient of the Connor Memorial Award for outstanding agricultural teacher of New Hampshire. In this issue we check in with a couple of our CBNA FFA alumni to see how participating in the organization helped shape their lives.

The National FFA Organization dates back to 1917 when the National Vocational Education Act (known as the Smith-Hughes Act) provided funding to states for vocational education courses. In 1925 Virginia Tech agricultural education teachers met to discuss an organization for boys in agriculture classes. The Future Farmers of Virginia would serve as the model for the Future Farmers of America.

FFA opened its membership to girls in 1969, making it possible for them to hold office and participate in competitive events at regional and national levels. In 1988 Future Farmers of America changed its name to National FFA Organization to better reflect the expanded agricultural opportunities encompassing science, business and technology, in addition to production farming.

The mission of the National FFA Organization is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The Coe-Brown’s Much-To-Do FFA Chapter is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to the late 1920s. The current CBNA FFA advisors are Sarah Ward ’83 and Charles Whitten. Under their guidance, the Much-To-Do Chapter fulfills the FFA mission through such activities as community service projects, the Deerfield Fair and Career Development Events in forestry, dairy, tractor driving, horticulture, natural resources, landscaping, small animal science and forages.

John Fernald graduated from Coe-Brown in 1999 and went on to earn an associate degree in dairy management from the University of New Hampshire in 2001. He was an active participant in CBNA’s FFA program throughout all four years of high school.

“When I was in Coe-Brown, I was the only kid who came from a working farm, where the family’s income is made from the farm, and there were not too many other students with agricultural backgrounds at all,” says John. “I joined FFA because it brought me together with those students who had the same interests as me. Once I started I enjoyed it. I participated in several competitions, including many tractor driving competitions, which I still judge at the Deerfield Fair to this day.

“FFA was the first real organization that I was a part of. It has paved the way for me to join several other agricultural organizations. Although I never served as an officer, being part of the group improved my leadership skills. In college I was a member of the UNH Dairy Club and joined Alpha Gamma Rho, the national agricultural fraternity. After college I became a member of the New Hampshire Farm Bureau and I have served as vice president of the Rockingham County board of directors for the last four years. I really feel that FFA was the key stepping stone to

CBNA Much-To-Do FFA Chapter has lasting impact

allow me to take on this and future leadership roles in the farming community.”

John has returned to Coe-Brown at the invitation of Sarah Ward to speak to current agriculture students, often bringing cows from his family’s dairy farm (the Fernald Farm in Nottingham).

“I enjoy coming back and talking to students at Coe-Brown for many reasons. I enjoy giving back to my school that helped me so much. But I really love seeing how much the FFA program has grown, with so many more students actively involved since my time there. I like it when I go back there and I see the kids that are really interested in agriculture. It gets me excited for the future. Now they have a dairy judging team—I really could have benefited from having that when I was there. This is a great opportunity for hands-on experience that most kids just don’t have access to today

“Not only is FFA great for the kids that know about farming, but it’s even better for those that do not come from an agricultural background. Those kids get the opportunity to learn about animals and farming and learn more than facts: they get to learn a way of life.”

Rebecca Paine is a 2009 graduate of Coe-Brown and an enthusiastic FFA supporter.

“I decided to participate in FFA when I was a junior,” says Becca. “My friends were in agriculture classes and talked about how fun they were and how they related to real life. They were actually doing things in these classes that they could see themselves doing in real life: animal science (becoming a veterinarian or veterinary technician); natural

by Elizabeth Lent, CBNA faculty memberThroughout the month of October Coe-Brown students researched each 2012 presidential

candidate’s proposals, platforms and plans to prepare for a mock presidential debate held on October 26 during a school-wide assembly. The candidates’ representatives and their campaign teams studied topics such as the economy, health care, foreign policy, the debt, immigration and education in order to effectively present their cases for why each of the candidates they represented should be elected president to serve the country for the next four years. CBNA junior Andrew Lang represented the Romney team in the debate, while the Obama team was represented by senior Henry Snow. CBNA faculty member Sean Ashley served as the moderator.

On Thursday, November 1, Coe-Brown students then had the opportunity to participate in a mock election during their lunch periods and study halls. The purpose of both of these activities was to help students understand the political and electoral process and to encourage them to become part of the political process in the future. The mock election and debate were excellent examples of how Coe-Brown carries out its mission: We strive to produce graduates who are academically and socially prepared to be responsible, caring and contributing members of the global society.

resources (forest management). I really enjoyed these classes for the fact that they were hands on, not just sitting in a classroom taking notes every day. You participated by being actively involved in each project every day. I jumped in head first and took all of the agriculture classes that Coe-Brown had to offer.

“FFA has shaped my future in many aspects. I have learned a lot about life and values. I currently am a member of the management team at Tractor Supply Co., an agricultural retail store. I live on an active beef farm and work seasonally at our family-owned and operated Christmas tree farm. Agriculture has become my passion.

“I have remained involved in FFA because the current students are the future. I want them to have the same passion that I do about agriculture. Agriculture is a dying field. People need to know the basics about living, and that is agriculture. One hundred years ago, agriculture was a way of life. Even 50 years ago, agriculture was still the accepted way of life, at least here in New Hampshire. Now technology is the accepted way of life.

“We started the Alumni FFA Chapter to help out the FFA programs at Coe-Brown. Mrs. Ward and Mr. Whitten can only do so much after they teach every day. We (the alumni) want to be able to help out with events such as Deerfield Fair, Fall and Spring Interscholastics, State Convention and possibly even National Convention. We are offering support and our experience, whether it be Vinny Porcella and his son Nick ’11 coaching Forestry (Nick was on the Forestry team all four years of high school) or myself helping out with

the Dairy Judging team. We can show the current students what we have learned and help guide them.

“Along with support and our experiences, we are trying to help fund some of these activities. With the poor economy, it is hard for some students to participate at the school, state and national levels. With the alumni helping, we feel it we can take some of the burden away from Mrs. Ward and Mr. Whitten, who already do so much more for their students than just teach them. We all are trying to keep the passion alive so future students will be able to have the experiences that we did.”

Coe-Brown’s alumni chapter is in the formative stages. An officer team has been elected and they are in the process of becoming a nonprofit organization. For more information visit the CBNA FFA Alumni Facebook page. You can find a link off the CBNA Facebook page at www.facebook.com/coebrown.

Speaking to those graduates, she said “We hope those of you graduating, and your parents, will come back to the performances and support the performing arts in whatever way you can. Coe-Brown has a long and fascinating history dating back to its beginnings in 1866. The following excerpt is from A Guide to the History and Old Dwelling Places of Northwood, New Hampshire by Joann Weeks Bailey.

“There had been a movement in Northwood in the 1840s to start a high school, but it was not successful. After the close of the Civil War the people were more determined, especially some of the veterans.

“The first meeting was held February 5, 1866, in the hall over the People’s Union Store. They voted to issue two hundred shares at $10 each, with each shareholder having a vote. A building committee was chosen, and they were instructed to ‘proceed to erect an Academy building in accordance with the plan presented here tonight; said building not to exceed one thousand dollars in cost.’

“On April 2, 1866, the members voted to ask Mr. and Mrs. Buzell of Exeter, N.H., to donate Harvey Island. They did so, and the island is still part of the Academy property.

“The first Principal was Rev. Elliott C. Cogswell, pastor of the Congregational Church. He served in both capacities for many years, and afterward as President of the Board of Trustees.

“Ebenezer Coe of Northwood had been much interested in the school, and had aided from time to time. His son, E.S. Coe, had become wealthy in the lumber business in Bangor, Maine. He also aided the Academy from time to time, with gifts of needed items, and with funds.

In 1875 the name was changed to Coe’s Northwood Academy in honor of Ebenezer Coe. In the same year the charter was changed to provide for a smaller board of trustees, instead of having all the shareholders vote on its affairs.

“In 1887 Mr. Coe gave the house known as Cogswell Hall to the Academy. It served as a residence for the headmaster, the teachers, and boarding pupils. The later acquisition of Wiggin Hall also gave more room for boarding pupils.

“In the early days many pupils boarded themselves at homes near the Academy. Hardly a house at the Center did not open its doors to them. Many came from Deerfield, from Strafford, from Nottingham, and from Barrington, and even more distant places. Even some of those who lived in Northwood boarded during the week.”

Coe-Brown welcomes donations of historic artifacts for the Academy’s archives. We are particularly seeking items from the era when the Academy’s mascot was the Cobra. Please contact Margaret Joyce in the Development and Community Outreach Office at 603-942-5531, ext. 186, or [email protected].

Vice President Sharon Olsson presented scholarships for summer studies to the following students: Zachary May ’14, Jillian Burrows ’15, Shane Chittum ’14, Emily Davis ’14, Christine Drew ’13, Kestyn Ritchotte ’13, Cassie Rogers ’15

SOPA also had the distinct honor of awarding $500 scholarships to two accomplished seniors: Samantha Lepecier, who is attending New England College; and Gregory Hatfield, who is studying at the

University of New Hampshire.Mrs. Lent shared her experiences with the CBNA theatre students.

She spoke about the “actors and actresses” she had the honor of working with throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. The pride she took in watching them advance all the way to the New England Theatre Festival was obvious as she unveiled the Festival Banner earned for their performance of Killing Bill.

Mrs. Lent went on to recognize the outgoing officers of the International Thespian Society (ITS) and introduce those theater students who worked hard to earn their membership into the Society through their participation in the theater performances this year. Recognition was also given to the graduating seniors who participated in theater activities and the new ITS officers.

Band participation recognition was given by Mr. Bruce McCormick and Choral participation recognition was delivered by Mr. David Deardorff. Both Mr. McCormick and Mr. Deardorff shared stories, anecdotes and personal reflections about the National Music Awards recipients. There was laughter, tears and a lot of emotional good-byes amongst all of the students and their teachers.

Anne Bailey ’77 closed out the evening with a last thank you to all of the performing arts students and teachers along with the volunteers who give countless hours of their time to make the Coe-Brown Performing Arts programs so successful. Here’s to a great 2012-2013 season of performances!

Chorus Director David Deardorff honored several of his senior chorus students (from left to right), Blair Leavitt, Sophie Shiere, Kendall McGowen and Quinn Palmer.
