Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure, you will quickly discover the unusual blend of in-
novation, culture and natural beauty that makes up Palo Alto and the Midpeninsula.Palo Alto is home to Nobel Prize winners, Silicon Valley CEOs, venture capital firms, Hewlett-Packard and one of the most renowned universities and medical centers in the world. The emergence of Stanford University in the 1970s as the nation’s leading high-technology research center paved the way for hundreds of startup businesses with connec-tions to Stanford professors and their inventions. Thus, Palo Alto became known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley. The Stanford campus itself is the biggest attraction, and visitors could easily spend a day or longer explor-ing it.At a minimum, any visit should also include a walk or drive through Palo Alto’s tree-lined residential neigh-borhoods (among the costliest in the nation), a walk in
the foothills or Baylands and some great shopping and eating in the handful of nearby business districts.Enjoy your visit to the Midpeninsula!

16 Spring/Summer 2019 Visitors Guide
From high-end department stores and one-of-a-kind boutiques to Michelin-starred restaurants, the
Midpeninsula’s open-air malls and shopping districts provide a variety of options, each with its own distinc-tive flavor and offerings.
PALO ALTOStanford Shopping Center: With 140 luxury stores and specialty boutiques, a mix of restaurants and cafes, sculpted gardens, cultural events and a European-style street market with locally grown produce, this 1.4-mil-lion-square-foot open-air center attracts visitors year round from near and far.
Downtown Palo Alto: Centered along University Avenue, this pedestrian-friendly district packs in two movie theaters — including one with a working Wurlitzer organ — multiple galleries, a bookstore, an eclectic mix of retail stores, restaurants and bars, along a 10-block area that stretches between Alma and Tasso streets. This district is crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, when restaurant reservations are advised, and parking can be difficult. Many downtown retailers are open in the evenings to cater to the bar and restaurant crowd.
Town & Country Village: Located on El Camino Real across from Stanford Stadium, it’s hard to miss the dis-tinctive red-tiled rooftops and rustic wood storefronts
at this outdoor shopping center, which features more than 70 specialty shops, restaurants and services sur-rounding a network of pedestrian walkways.
MOUNTAIN VIEW San Antonio center: The corner of El Camino Real and San Antonio Road is home to two distinct shopping ar-eas that were once part of a 56-acre outdoor mall built in the 1950s. San Antonio Shopping Center, located on the southernmost portion of the property, is a tradi-tional retail center with big-box stores, including Trader Joe’s market and 24 Hour Fitness. The Village at San Antonio Center, which runs along San Antonio Road, underwent major renovations over the past few years that have transformed the corner into a modern, mixed-use center with luxury apartments, office space, parks, plazas and about 30 new boutiques and restaurants.
Castro Street: With dozens of dining choices and a mix of music venues, performance spaces, coffee shops, pubs and book stores, the Castro Street area that runs eight blocks from El Camino Real to West Evelyn Avenue through downtown is a popular entertainment destina-tion. Visitors can find everything from Thai-style rolled ice cream and vintage comic books to a museum dedi-cated to locks.
LOS ALTOS AND MENLO PARK Downtown Los Altos: Don’t expect to find big-box retail stores in Los Altos’ six-block downtown triangle. This tree-lined district, known for its quaint small-town feel, features a mix of locally owned boutiques, restau-rants, salons and other services.
Downtown Menlo Park: With numerous outdoor street cafes that stay open for late-night dining, Santa Cruz Avenue is a lively destination. The district includes a mix of boutiques, galleries and shops for everyday needs.
Palo Alto’s California Avenue lies just south of the Stanford campus. This five-block district between El Camino Real and Park Boulevard is quieter than downtown and features boutiques and a large number of eateries, including two Michelin star restaurants (Baumé and Protégé), popular with local residents. WALK, RUN AND EXPLOREThe Stanford “Dish” loop offers almost 4 miles of paved path that winds through the Stanford foothills with tre-mendous views of the university, Palo Alto and entire Peninsula.
The Baylands Nature Preserve offers miles of flat walk-ing trails that allow visitors to explore the area’s extensive wildlife habitat.
The Pearson-Arastradero Preserve, in the foothills be-yond Stanford near 1530 Arastradero Road, has a network
of easy trails ideal for one- to two-hour hikes and a small unstaffed visitor’s center with exhibits.
GOLFBaylands Golf Links, located at 1875 Embarcadero Road, is a newly reconfigured municipal course that re-opened in May 2018 following a $12-million-plus reno-vation that integrated 55 acres of native plants and ad-jacent wetlands into the 18-hole course. 650-856-0881, baylandsgolflinks.com.
Those with a Stanford connection (alumni or parents) can play at the Stanford Golf Course. It’s located at 198 Junipero Serra Blvd., Stanford. At this venue, visitors will find a beautiful and long course operated by the universi-ty. 650-724-0944 (golf shop), 650-498-4461 (driving range), golfcourse.stanford.edu.
At Mountain View’s Shoreline Links, located at 2940 N. Shoreline Blvd., golfers can play on the 750-acre course that offers 18 holes and acres of water hazards. 650-903-4653, shorelinelinks.com.
SWING THE RACKETPalo Alto offers many public tennis courts. Those closest to hotels are the courts at Palo Alto High School (enter from 25 Churchill Ave.) and at Rinconada Park (located at 777 Embarcadero Road). Both are lit at night. There are many courts on the Stanford campus, but you are ex-pected to have a university affiliation.
BIKE AROUND TOWNThe area prides itself on accommodating and encour-aging bike riding. The most popular rides use Alpine, Arastradero, Portola and Sand Hill roads to create loops of different lengths. Skilled riders wanting to cycle several hours or all day ride up to Skyline Boulevard and down to the coast and back. In Mountain View, try bik-ing around Shoreline Lake, located in the Baylands just south of Palo Alto.
DRIVE TO THE COASTPalo Alto is located between the bay and foothills, and the Pacific Ocean and the beach are only a 45-minute drive away. If you want to mix together shopping, eat-ing and beach walking, your best bet is to head for Half Moon Bay.
Shoreline Lake is the premiere destination for all sorts of water sports. The 50-acre manmade lake offers pedalboat, rowboat, canoe and kayak rentals. For more information, go to shorelinelake.com. Weekly file photo.
LAKE GETAWAY

GETTING AROUNDTrains, shuttles, taxis, rideshare
Palo Alto is an extremely safe community, and other than taking obvious precautions when out at night,
visitors should feel comfortable freely exploring the city. Use common sense and extra care when using the pedes-trian tunnels at the train stations, and avoid walking alone at night.
Palo Alto is served by a transportation network that includes the regional Caltrain system (800-660-4287; for hearing impaired, 650-508-6448 (TTY); caltrain.com), which operates frequent trains between San Francisco and San Jose; the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority bus system (408-321-2300, vta.org); and an ex-tensive network of pedestrian and bike paths. Local taxis (Yellow Checker Cab Co., 408-777-7777 or 650-999-9999) and rides through services such as Lyft and Uber are also available.
San Francisco and San Jose airports connect to nearby Caltrain stations in Millbrae and Santa Clara (via BART at SFO and VTA bus, Route 10, at SJC) and arrive at the down-town Palo Alto train station.
During weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., parking in downtown Palo Alto and California Avenue lots is free for two hours (and parking garages for three hours). There is no enforcement on weekends. Day permits for downtown and California Avenue are available for $25. For more information, visit paloalto.parking guide.com.
Stanford and Palo Alto operate two free shuttle services that connect riders to transit, shopping, dining and entertainment on campus and within the city. Shuttles are open to all riders. For information about the Palo Alto Shuttle, go to cityofpaloalto.org/shuttle. For information about the Stanford Marguerite shuttle service, go to marguerite.stanford.edu. Photo by Zachary Hoffman.

The Santa Cruz Mountains — which rise 3,786 feet above the San Francisco Bay at their highest point
and stretch the entire length of the Peninsula — are home to hundreds of intimate artisan wineries and pri-vate vineyards. The region’s higher elevations, cooler temperatures and frequent fog, provide the perfect micro-climate for growing pinot noir and chardonnay grapes. If you have at least a few hours, it’s worth taking a scenic drive (tinyurl.com/ScenicWineDrive) along the winding mountain roads to visit some of these wineries and take in the panoramic view of Silicon Valley.

High-tech may have replaced many of the orchards that once defined the Peninsula and the surrounding area,
but there are still a number of family-owned ranches, spe-cialty farms and experimental orchards around to provide lots of opportunities to experience farm-fresh apricots, nuts, avocados and other local specialties year-round in the fields where they are grown or in restaurants focused on farm-to-table dining.
RESTAURANTS: SEASONAL MENUS AND FARM DINNERSMORSEY’S FARMHOUSE 134 Main St., Los Altos 650-860-6060 | morseys.comEvery dish at Morsey’s Farmhouse in Los Altos is made with products from Kal and Yulia Morsey’s 50-acre dairy just outside of Sacramento. The husband-and-wife team have built the entire restaurant menu around the milk produced from their herd of about 400 water buffalo. Diners can find everything from gelato, buffalo-milk quiche and buffalo cheesecake to salads and sandwiches made with the res-taurant’s mozzarella, burrata and award-winning ricotta.
PORTOLA KITCHEN 3130 Alpine Road, Portola Valley 650-851-6453 | portolakitchen.comAlmost everything on the rustic-Italian menu at Portola Kitchen is made from scratch using locally sourced ingre-dients, including fresh-picked produce delivered daily from the family-owned Webb and Jelich ranches, both located a short drive down the road.
VINA ENOTECA 700 Welch Road, Palo Alto 650-646-3477 | vinaenoteca.com Housed in the rustic Stanford Barn that served as a working winery in the late 1800s, Vina Enoteca regularly draws on produce grown about a mile away at Stanford University’s O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm for its Italian-California menu. Restaurant owner Rocco Scordella checks out what’s available on the farm before coming up with dishes at his restaurant.
MADERA 2825 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park 650-561-1540 | maderasandhill.comMadera brings seasonal ingredients along with the farmers who grow them into its Michelin-star kitchen once a month for a five-course farm dinner. A farmer and the executive chef join guests at the communal din-ing table during each dinner to discuss the creation and ingredients of each dish. The dinner series also includes a flight of wine pairings customized by the sommelier team. Dinners are offered during one seating at 6:30 p.m., spring through fall.
FARMS: TOURS AND TASTINGSHARLEY FARMS 205 North St., Pescadero 650-879-0480 | harleyfarms.comVisitors can dine by candlelight in the hayloft at Harley Farms surrounded by nine acres of pastures where ingre-dients in the meal are produced. The restored 1910 dairy farm, which is now home to 200 alpine goats, hosts tours followed by farm dinners on select Fridays and Saturdays year round, providing visitors the opportunity to see where and how the farm’s award-winning chevre, fromage blanc, ricotta and feta goat cheeses are made. Tours include a behind-the-scenes peek at the dairy’s cheese making, with
stops at the edible flower garden, loafing barn and milking parlor. The four-course farm dinners are prepared from lo-cally grown food by the farm cook. Farm dinners are open to diners ages 18 and older, and sell out early.
O’DONOHUE FAMILY STANFORD EDUCATIONAL FARM 175 Electioneer Road, Stanford | farm.stanford.edu Stanford University’s six-acre academic farm is open year round for public tours, seasonal tastings and other special harvest events. Overseen by the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Science, the campus farm contains more than 200 varieties of vegetables, flowers, herbs, field crops and fruit and provides 15,000 pounds of produce a year for the university’s student dining halls. Students come to the farm to test new ideas about the biological, social and environmental aspects of farming. Tours begin at the Huffington Barn every Tuesday at 12:15 p.m.
WEBB RANCH 2720 Alpine Road, Portola Valley webbranchinc.com Established in 1922, this six-acre, family-owned ranch provides organic and pesticide-free fruits and vegetables direct from the farm to grocery stores, farmers markets and select restaurants year round. Visitors can explore the ranch’s orchards and stables and pick their own boysen-berries, blackberries and raspberries by the bucket from spring to fall.
