Asian Cooking SecretsAsian cuisine is considered to be one of the major cuisines of the world and probably one of the oldest. Here are a few secrets of successful Asian cooking:

• The backbone of Asian cooking is fresh and seasonal produce.

• Vegetables, sauce and rice are the main components of an Asian dish, and meat is treated as a condiment.

• Most Asian cooking is done at high temperatures, which creates crisp textures and brings out the flavors of the vegetables.

• Sauces, spices and flavored oils are key ingredients in Asian cuisine.

National Heart MonthCelebrate a Healthy Heart

Keep the beat strong and eat to live with diet and nutrition. Cooking up heart health requires no secret ingredient. Here are some tips to help you make healthier meal choices for your family.

Balance your daily food choices. Think of your eating plan as a pyramid with the base forming the foundation for good nutrition. The foods you should eat most often form the bottom of the pyramid, and the foods you eat less of are at the top.

Grains comprise the first level of the pyramid, with bread, cereal, rice and pasta as its components.

Vegetables share the second level of the food pyramid with Fruits.

The third level consists of Dairy which includes milk, yogurt and cheese, and Protein from meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts.

At the very top of the pyramid in the fourth level are the items you should use sparingly — fats, oils and sweets.

You will notice that the bottom two levels, or over half of your daily food intake, are fiber. These foods are plant based and help keep your digestive tract healthy.

Spice it up and get more taste by flavoring your food with spices and herbs rather than fat and salt. Try rosemary or tarragon on your chicken, dill or oregano in your green beans and sage in peas and potatoes.

Find your favorite method to reduce fat in your cooking without using butter or high-fat sauces. This applies to meats and vegetables alike. Choose from baking, broiling, steaming, poaching, grilling, stir-frying, roasting and even microwaving.

Fiesta helps you keep it simple with a wide selection of whole grain goodness in the Bakery department, fresh fruit and vegetables in the produce department, lowfat milk products in the dairy department, lean selections in the Meat and seafood departments and all the seasonings and spices you need to maintain a heart healthy menu.
