Diagnostic KitsFIMBREX kits combine latex agglutination technology with monoclonal antibodyspecificity to provide rapid, easy-to-perform tests for the presence of fimbrial adhesinson cultures of enterotoxigenic E.coli (ETEC). Coloured latex makes test results easy toread and end-points are reached in a few minutes. Each kit is specific for one of thefimbrial adhesins and contains disposable agglutination test cards and reagents for 60tests performed individually, or 90 tests when performed in multiples of three. Inaddition to the monoclonal antibody-coated latex, the kit also contains a controlreagent to detect non-specific agglutination, an inactivated positive control antigen, and suspension buffer, all supplied in convenient dropper bottles; only mixing sticksare required in order to carry out the test. Reagents are presented in liquid form andare ready for use. Store at 4°C.

VLA Scientific Antimicrobial Testing

over30,000

bacterial isolates

VLA Scientific is able to provide up-to-date susceptibilityprofiles for a wide range of currently marketed or researchantimicrobials. We can carry out comparative studies betweendifferent antimicrobials and changes in resistanceprofile over time, which may be suitable for productregistrations, claim extensions or marketingpurposes.

To support these services we maintain an extensivecollection of over 30,000 recent and historicbacterial isolates of large animal pathogens, which includesboth common and less common aerobes and anaerobes fromall livestock species.

Some of these isolates already have establishedsensitivity profiles, so we can selectively testorganisms of known provenance. We can alsoassemble collections of recent isolates for testing ifthe above do not fulfil your requirements.

We can also collect isolates to your requirementsif you have a specific need not covered by thecurrent collection.

VLA is an InternationalReference Laboratory (IRL)for Avian Influenza andNewcastle Disease.

Avian Influenzahelping in the worldwidefight against

It may be possible to initially screen all haemagglutinatingagents with the primary serum. However, to achieve a definitiveidentification of the virus subtype, a second serum (produced toa virus with a heterologous neuraminidase subtype) should beused to ensure accurate identification and eliminate any crossreactivity due to a common neuraminidase subtype betweenstrains. For serology, consistent with the principles for virusidentification, one antigen should be used for screening and allpositive reactors confirmed using a second antigen in order toeliminate interference from cross neuraminidase antibodies.

VLA TaqMan®Influenza Detection Kits

When testing for Avian Influenza virus A (AIV), laboratoriesaround the world require rapid and reliable assays forinfluenza surveillance and to help enable immediate responsein the case of an outbreak.

In collaboration with the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, World ReferenceLaboratory for Avian Influenza, Applied Biosystems has developed a seriesof new and optimised VLA TaqMan® Influenza Detection Kits.

The kits provide superior detection accuracy, sensitivity and specificity foravian influenza A viruses and the H5 and H7 subtypes. Extensive validationhas been performed by the VLA with samples from multiple wild birdspecies and poultry samples. Furthermore, the assays are in an easy-to-uselyophilised bead format, which significantly simplifies the workflow, reduces samples-to-result time and improves the overall reproducibility ofavian influenza detection.

Detection Kit (DK) details:

n DK-Adetects all avian influenza A virus subtypes (H1 through to H16) from all geographic regions

n DK-H5detects Eurasian H5 avian influenza virus subtypes

n DK-H7detects Eurasian H7 avian influenza virus subtypes

Ruminant pestiviruses can be divided into BVDV1, BVDV2 and BDV. No singlemonoclonal antibody binds specifically to all three subtypes but the above panel takentogether will recognise most strains and indicate to which subtype they belong. Noneof these monoclonal antibodies bind to the CSF virus, so the panel may be used inconjunction with RAE0242 or RAE0826 (see page 23) for the differentiation ofBVD/BD and CSF isolates from pigs as recommended by the EC. VLA Scientific and the JohnInnes Centre have createdTuff™RNA molecules that encodetarget sequences for a number ofRT-PCR assays for animal viruses. These molecules can be used as positivePCR or process controls for diagnosticmolecular tests, avoiding the risk of using aninfectious virus.

The Tuff™RNA is a genetically modified Cowpea Mosaic Virusthat is stable, transportable at 4oC and, most importantly is notinfectious to animals or plants. It can be incorporated into yourroutine testing schedule assuring the correct performance ofyour RT-PCR assay. As the target RNA is encapsidated, theproblem of RNA degradation associated with naked RNA orin-vitro transcripts is eliminated.
