Additive Synthesis
• A synthesis technique that creates a periodic signal by adding sinusoids together.
Amplitude
• The size of a signal.
Bass Clef
• Also called F clef. Indicates the note on the fourth line is F below middle C.
Bit
• Short for “binary digit”. A bit takes on only the value of 0 or 1.
Byte
• Eight consecutive bits.
Chord
• A collection of simultaneously played tones.
Clef
• The sign written at the beginning of a staff to indicate pitch.
Fundamental
• A mathematical quantity describing the repetition rate of a periodic signal.
Hertz
• Units of frequency or repetition rate, measured in periods per second.
Loudspeaker
• A device that turns electrical energy into sour energy.
Melody
• A sequence of notes that make up a piece of music.
Microphone
• A device that turns sound energy into electrical energy.
Periodic Signal
• A signal that exactly repeats at regular intervals.
Pitch
• The perceived frequency of a sound.
Rate of Decay
• A number that describes the way an exponential function decreases over time.
Score
• Notation showing all parts or instraments.
Signal
• A pattern or variation that contains information, usually denoted as s(t).
Sound Signal
• A pattern or variation in air molecules that a sound makes.
Tempo
• The speed of a piece of music.
Spectrum
• A plot of periodic signal’s sinusoidal components.
