1717: Free and compulsory basic education for young men in Prussia

13), confessional schools - reading, writing, calculating and strict education in ethics and discipline

First half of 19th century:

1810: training colleges for teachers, state certification requirements, higher standard of education

Development of a middle educational system:teaching contents due to the newdemands of an industrialized society(trainees in office and technical jobs)

Second half of 19th century:

1871 „Abitur“ extended to all of Germany

1872 separate secondary schools for girls

First women in teaching profession

20th century:

Young women are allowed to

• pass the Abitur (1908)

• go to university (1910)

After World War I:

• 4 years of primary school for all children

• + 4 years of secondary school

• or entry into higher or middle education

• long discussion about comprehensive schools failed

• 1968: comprehensive school became additional part of the German secondary education (4 different types of secondary education, classes 5-10)
