St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, is named after St. Francis Xavier, one of the founding

members of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. A Jesuit saint of the 16th

Century who travelled to India. Francis Xavier, born Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta (7

the Kingdom of Navarre (currently Spain-France) and co-founder of the Society of

Jesus. He was a student ofSaint Ignatius of Loyolaand one of the first seven Jesuits,

dedicated at Montmartre in 1534.]He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly in the

Portuguese Empire of the time. He was influential in the spreading and upkeep of

Catholicism most notably in India, but also ventured into Japan, Borneo, the Moluccas,

and other areas which had thus far not been visited by Christian missionaries.

The College was founded by the Society of Jesus, a Christian Religious Group started by

St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. Since its inception, the Jesuits have toiled in the field of

education, among other things, and were even called 'the school-masters of Europe' at

one time. They are inspired by a vision of humanity drawn from the life, teachings and

    OUR HISTORY & VISION STATEMENT:

    HISTORY

St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, was started by the Ranchi Jesuit Society, on July 3, 1944. Ever since 1889 and pre-

independence era, when a number of secondary schools came into existence in Ranchi, the Society felt the

need of starting a College. Those days students had to go to Patna or to Kolkata for higher education. St.

Xavier's College was started in 1944 and was first affiliated to Patna niversity; from 1950-1960 the college was

under Bihar University and when the Ranchi University came into existence in 1960, the college was affiliated

to Ranchi University. Since its very inception, the College was rated as one of the best colleges and most

sought-after College after Science College, Patna.

nation in the context of plurality of religions and diversity of cultures. Across the world, the Society of Jesus, is

responsible for over 1,865 Educational Institutions in 65 Countries. In India, the Society of Jesus, runs 153 High

Schools, 38 University College, 14 Technical Institutes and 5 Business Administration Institutes. While Jesuit

educational work has always been at the service of the whole nation, irrespective of caste and creed, it

recognizes a special responsibility towards the Catholic community.

The Ranchi Jesuit Province through the contributions of St. Xaviers College envisions the educational

development of the Jharkhand state with special attention to the needs of the tribal students of the region.

The College draws its inspiration and vision from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and particularly from the

life of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus in 1540 and from the life of St. Francis Xavier

who established first educational institution in Goa. The College is named after this great scholarly saint
