When God's Spirit is at work in a person, amazing things happen. The person's whole life blossoms and bears beautiful fruit; and the most wonderful fruit of all is the giving and receiving of true love. The love which the Holy Spirit manifests in believers is called agape. This love is not a feeling, but a choice. It is the choice to be kind, to sacrifice, to consider another's needs greater than one's own (Philippians 2:3). This type of love is not something unattainable, but practical. Very often we can find this in the love of the mother who sacrifices her own intentions and desires for the child, in the love of a husband/wife for one’s partner or in the love of children for their parents. In each of these, they all deliberately express themselves in loving ways and consider the welfare of others. Biblical love is dependent on the giver’s character, not emotion. For instance, a mature believer demonstrating love will not exercise his or her freedom if that action might harm another Christian in some way. Rather than risking the possibility of causing the immature Christian to question and stumble, the mature believer will not exercise his freedom, out of love for his brother. (Romans 14:1-15). Therefore, this fruit of the Spirit chooses to set aside one’s own preferences, desires and sometimes even needs, to put the other person first. (Philippians 2:1-3) We need to pray to the Holy Spirit for this love. We need to cultivate a culture of moving by the Spirit and in the Spirit. We need to practise it. God has instilled this in us; we should nurture it and cultivate it. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” (John 15:13) Archdiocese of Birmingham ST MARY’S THE MOUNT Roman Catholic Church Vocationists WALSALL Diocese of Birmingham www.birminghamdiocese.org.uk Registered CharityNo.234216 Vocationists www.vocationist.org Registered Charity No. 1135796 Brothers: Nelson, SDV, Ritche, SDV Bro. LOVE: THE FIRST FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The virtue of Love, in the Christian sense, is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. When God's Spirit

is at work in a person, amazing things happen. The person's whole life blossoms and bears

beautiful fruit; and the most wonderful fruit of all is the giving and receiving of true love. The

love which the Holy Spirit manifests in believers is called agape. This love is not a feeling, but

a choice. It is the choice to be kind, to sacrifice, to consider another's needs greater than one's

own (Philippians 2:3). This type of love is not something unattainable, but practical. Very

often we can find this in the love of the mother who sacrifices her own intentions and desires

for the child, in the love of a husband/wife for one’s partner or in the love of children for their

parents. In each of these, they all deliberately express themselves in loving ways and consider

the welfare of others. Biblical love is dependent on the giver’s character, not emotion. For

instance, a mature believer demonstrating

love will not exercise his or her freedom if

that action might harm another Christian

in some way. Rather than risking the

possibility of causing the immature

Christian to question and stumble, the

mature believer will not exercise his

freedom, out of love for his brother.

(Romans 14:1-15). Therefore, this fruit of the

Spirit chooses to set aside one’s own

preferences, desires and sometimes even

needs, to put the other person first.

(Philippians 2:1-3)

We need to pray to the Holy Spirit for this love. We need to cultivate a culture of moving

by the Spirit and in the Spirit. We need to practise it. God has instilled this in us; we should

nurture it and cultivate it.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” (John 15:13)

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Divine Jesus, Son of the eternal Father and Mary Immaculate, grant many of the faithful true generosity in

following your call, and bestow on them the grace of your Holy Spirit to persevere in overcoming all obstacles to

their vocations. Give the church in this Diocese and throughout the world many holy priests and fervent religious.

Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, Blessed Justin and all Saints, we humbly

ask you to hear our prayers and multiply the ministries by which we may serve one another in faith and love. Hail

Mary…..
