For us, a big part of the holiday season is about counting
our blessings and being thankful for them. We at Open Door have
much for which to be thankful. We have our family and friends whom we
love dearly, our general good health, roofs over our heads, and food on our tables. Of
course there are challenges that we face from time to time, but with all we have, we feel our
cup runneth over and we cannot and will not complain. And every once in a while, we are
bestowed extra blessings. This has been our experience most recently with an outpouring of
generosity from our community.
This was true when Miss Susie, with her friends and patrons from the Main Street Pub & Grill, hosted a full Thanksgiving feast for all of us. You heard it right… an entire Thanksgiving feast for ALL individuals and staff of Open Door. So much hard work and preparation went into putting on this event. And there was so much food! Well, there would have to be when you are feeding a small army. By the end of the evening, all of us were well satisfied to the point of being stuffed, and either wheeling or waddling out to our vans for the ride home. And Miss Susie and her band of merrymakers didn’t stop there. They then organized a Christmas party a few weeks later for everyone, including a gift for each and every individual! There were cookies with punch and Christmas music. Santa Claus himself was there to help pass out presents!

OPEN DOOR REHABILITATION CENTER
We were showered with more blessings by a special group that we have deemed our “Annual Angels,” who for the past several years have purchased Christmas presents for those individuals who would be in the group homes on Christmas morning. These substitute Santas generously ensure that these individuals have something to unwrap and enjoy. This group go out on Black Friday from 8am to 10 at night and then meet again to have a wrapping party. While these Angels prefer to be anonymous, word on the street is that they might be getting yet another member!
Christmas joy was spread all over Open Door with the help of the American Legion Post 675 Women’s Auxiliary, which donated $100

to be used for purchasing presents. And Christmas isn’t Christmas without homemade cookies. Thanks to the Klebenow family, who not only made cookies, but delivered them to all the ODRC homes on Christmas Eve. Rudolph couldn’t have delivered them any better. The Horoszko family also filled us with great joy by sponsoring three individuals who do not have family to buy for them. When asked about the gifts, Karen Horoszko said, “Everyone needs a little Christmas.” And we can’t forget the Kris Kringles at OffWorld Designs in Sandwich, who generously donated 100 Santa hats that were proudly worn by our guys during their annual Parents’ Club Christmas Party.
This holiday season was definitely one to remember. Our community and the angels within it not only blessed us with food and gifts, but more importantly with friendship and the opportunity for all of us to gather as a family… Our Open Door Family… and recognize and celebrate all of our blessings. For this we are especially grateful.

Arriving at Santa’s workshop.
We have been lucky enough to take multiple trips to the magnificent Paramount Theatre this holiday season. Many individuals here at Open Door got to experience the “Theater” for the first time ever. By scheduling multiple trips and various events, everyone who wanted to enjoy a trip was able to attend. We received the red-carpet treatment from the purchase of tickets to the end of each event. The group sales coordinator, Melissa, has treated us like royalty. Each phone call made was received by Melissa, who knew us by name and took great care to ensure our group had the best accessible seats possible. A couple of days before each performance, she would contact us with all the details needed for royalty. When we arrived, we were able to pull right up to the front of the theater, where we were greeted by friendly staff who took great care to ensure we unloaded and parked just feet away from the entrance!
Once inside, the ushers continued the royal treatment as they helped us get to our seats. We saw multiple productions of Million Dollar Quartet and ELF and each event was filled with the magic of the “Theater” and the Five Star service! Each and every client who attends any event at the Paramount leaves beaming with excitement from the awesome experience!

’Tis the Season… for the Paramount Theatre!
‘Twas 3 weeks before Christmas, when all through the town,
Plenty of people were stirring; all of Sandwich was around.
As folks began crowding town square, the buzz of Santa filled the crisp winter’s air.
Sirens began and caused quite the clatter. As cars drove by, they paid them no matter.
Away to the sidewalk the crowd flew like a flash and what to our wondering eyes did appear, but a giant fire truck filled with firemen; sadly no reindeer.
Next to the driver so lively and quick, he came hopping right out, it was jolly old Saint Nick!
Now David!, Now Julie! Now Santa! To Bittersweets we go! To Santa’s workshop! HO HO HO!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! This night is something special, we’re going to have a ball.
They were there to take wishes from the Sandwich youth, followed by a quick snapshot in the photo booth.Pointy ears and candy-striped socks donned by the elves; the children laughed when they saw them, they were beside themselves. Some children were nervous, shedding a tear, but St. Nicholas and his elves were nothing to fear. After their visit, on their way out, there was no reason for any child to pout. The elves reached down and gave them a sweet candy cane. This continued for a while; the moon started to wane. The magic of the events all started with a tree dressed in light, lots of Christmas wishes being merry and bright. That fateful evening, Santa and those elves saw the Christmas spirit ignite; their slumber would surely include dreams of Santa’s sleigh in flight. As the night ended, Santa exclaimed with delight, “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!”

YOUNG VOLUNTEERSo you want to know what it’s like to be a young volunteer at Open Door. Let me tell you! I really like to help and volunteer with my mom on events for Open Door. I have been volunteering at the Lemon Shake-up Stand at the Fair since I was 8! I have also volunteered for several car washes and the Christmas Party serving pizza. I love doing the car washes. Now that I am a teenager, I plan on helping more through the Aktion Club with the Lock-In, baking for the bake sales, and Highway Cleanup. I have to say my favorite time to volunteer is during the Fair. My friends think it’s pretty cool that I am “working there,” and I have even invited and had some of my friends help too.
The really cool thing is that I have been around the consumers at Open Door since I was a little, LITTLE kid. I have learned many things about disabilities. People with disabilities are not that much different from me and you. I’ve realized and learned that they are super nice people, and have way more ability than people think. It has also increased my empathy and understanding for the different abilities and disabilities people have, what causes them and how each person is unique! I am definitely an advocate, and stand up for kids in my school who have problems or get teased.
I will for sure continue to help out, volunteer, learn and grow. It’s important to give back to the community and help those in need. I am proud to be associated with Open Door! And the really cool part is that the consumers and staff give back to me too! I have the biggest cheering section when I march in a parade with the Regiment!! But really, it is very rewarding and I enjoy it a lot.
With heavy hearts, we said good-bye to one of our longtime family members, Todd Feldott, on October 31, 2017. It was a sudden and unexpected passing; however, Todd, like many here, beat unthinkable odds in his lifetime. Born August 5, 1964 in Aurora, Illinois to Henry and Vivian Feldott, Todd was born with Down Syndrome and several other health issues. Amazingly, and with a very loving family, Todd beat odds he wouldn’t live past age 2 and that he would never walk, or at the very least on his own. So with the help and love of his family, Todd started becoming more and more mobile, and in fact, he got a nickname during this time… Toad. Because, to move around, Todd had a unique way of using his arms to sort of “swing hop,” and it resembled a frog hopping. His brother Dirk said he was so fast, he made a game out of out “running” us. He was quick!!
Todd blossomed and walked eventually, and attended school, graduating from Hope D. Wall School in 1985 with his diploma. What a proud moment! Shortly after this, in 1991, Todd started working with Open Door, and eventually moved into our CLF (Community
Living Facility) in 1993. He worked in our workshop until he wasn’t able to anymore. After that, Todd enjoyed days of more leisure, but still loved doing screw boards, crafts, and participating in classes. He of course loved music and enjoyed anything related. Todd met so many new people over the years and developed close bonds, especially with Timmy, Brian and Vern when they all moved into Ash Group Home in 2006. Todd was an avid Three Stooges and John Wayne fan, and loved to travel and visit family out west and spend time with his family here in Illinois: his mother, brother Dirk and sister-in-law Lynn, and his sister Christina. He would spend leisure time arranging his hat collection, watching TV and movies, and making people laugh. He had a great sense of humor. This was apparent when he gained another nickname a few years back: George. When I asked about this nickname, we found that another consumer, after watching George of the Jungle (a movie), started singing the theme song, “George, George, George of the Jungle, watch out for that tree!” Apparently, that struck Todd’s funny bone, and he asked to be called…. George. So it was….
In 2009, Todd’s health declined, he was on oxygen, and eventually in a wheelchair after a broken bone in his foot. He never lost that sense of humor, though, and continued to work and play as he always did. Todd was very blessed with a loving, active family, many good friends at Open Door, an amazing “beat the odds” life—and for a boy who was thought not to make it past age 2, 53 years is a good way to prove everyone wrong. Todd had a way with people, a kind, loving heart, a beautiful smile and a will like no one! His sudden passing was hard to accept; however, we know he is reunited with several gone before him, like his father and dear friends Vern and Brian. And we now have yet one more angel watching over us.
A Sad Farewell…Todd F.
