IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 14 No.9 Sep 2017 Page 1 Vol. 14 :: No. 9 :: Sep 2017 Message from Chairman Dear Members, I am happy to open this newsletter with a very happy note. Congratulations to one and all. You have all made it happen! IEEE Madras won the outstanding large section award in Region 10, where we have Australia, Japan, Korea, China etc., apart from rest of India. The activities taken up by the various volunteers in IEEE Madras have borne fruit. This recognition is for each one of you. We at the Executive Committee just facilitate you to go ahead and take up the activities. And you have all done a good job. Let me thank one and all from the bottom of our heart, on behalf of the Executive Committee and my own personal behalf for making this happen. We have won this on earlier occasion in 2010 too and that shows our consistency. We have also won the bronze for the video contest in R10 and the team deserves compliments. Again, congratulations to all who made it possible, from the executive committee and on my own behalf. Having said that, always we have a nature to bask under past glory and set into complacency. Let me warn all of you that this should not happen. Once we achieved this, we have to go ahead and work for many more honours. As I mentioned on earlier occasions, somehow our members are not applying for the numerous awards, individual and team which are available at IEEE. Recognizing volunteers is an important aspect of IEEE. The volunteers who believe they have done well are requested to please apply for suitable awards. One another aspect I wanted to touch upon is that there are many talented senior personalities in IEEE Madras. My request to them, especially those with academic background, is to apply for distinguished lecturers. These are coveted positions. When once selected, they will be invited to deliver talks in their areas of expertise, going around the globe fully funded for travel and other expenses. Similarly, while conducting international conferences, please invite Distinguished Lecturers to deliver invited talks at designated theme sessions. You may not have to even pay their international travel. This is a good way to get highly talented personalities in the area of the conference and thus add its value. Even though we have modified the norms for approving international conferences, still a lot more improvement is to be done. We will be further modifying the norms to make the conference really international. I hope all members will understand the need for this especially in the light of many conference papers being rejected by IEEE Explore and authors are prohibited due to plagiarism. Once again, at the cost of repetition, I request all of you to remember to renew your IEEE membership well in advance and take advantage of any additional benefits offered. Also, consider volunteering for other activities like Education Society, IEEE Standards, etc. to expand your horizon. Till next time, Yours voluntarily M A Atmanand Chairman, IEEE Madras Section

I am happy to open this newsletter with a very happy note. Congratulations to one and

in Region 10, where we have Australia, Japan, Korea, China etc., apart from rest of India.

The activities taken up by the various volunteers in IEEE Madras have borne fruit. This

recognition is for each one of you. We at the Executive Committee just facilitate you to

Dear Readers,

MAS LINK congratulates the Madras Section, its members and volunteers for receiving the R10 Large Section

Award – 2017, a great recognition.

We are happy to present the ninth issue of IEEE MAS LINK in 2017. Perhaps this is the largest issue in 2017 with

maximum number of activities reported. .

An interesting report from IEEE spectrum is that Google has spent over $1.1 Billion on self-driving technology.

This figure is from the inception of the project, codenamed Chauffeur in 2009 till end of 2015. It will be exciting to

see these autonomous cars hit the roads. Mercedes and Tesla are also making rapid strides in this cutting-edge area.

This we expect will be having a socio-economic impact in many countries including in India.

societies are also published.

Under “Forthcoming Events” various events technically sponsored by Madras Section and Societies and some other

events which will be of interest to our members are presented. The details of financial assistance extended by IEEE

Madras Section to SBs to organize events and details of Funds transferred from IEEE HQ to IEEE Student Branches

through Madras Section are also highlighted. We had compiled and presented a number of announcements which

would interest the members and SBs to gain maximum from IEEE and its offerings. We are sure that members will

find our usual Information Resources column useful.

We repeat our request for contributions from one and all to make the MAS LINK a sought after publication from the

Megashifts

Digitization: everything that can will become digital

Mobilisation: computing is no longer happening at the desk – everything is mobile

Screenification: all that can… will be screenified

Disintermediation: many traditional middlemen are suffering because technology makes it possible to ‘go

direct’. Examples include record labels, publishers, advertising (brands can now tell their stories without

TV or print) etc

Datafication: what used to happen between-people i.e. not recorded or mediated, is now being turned into

data, e.g. electronic medical records vs talking to the doctor

Intelligization: everything that used to be dumb is now becoming connected and intelligent, such as gas-

pipelines, farms, cars, shipping containers etc

Automation: a huge factor in regards to technological unemployment

Virtualisation: no longer just physical things in some room or location but an ‘instance’ in the cloud e.g.

software defined networking instead of local routers, virtual friends such as Hello Barbie etc

Augmentation: humans can increasingly use technology to augment themselves i.e. to be omniscient,

omnipresent, omnipotent, and become kind of super-human. Augmentation examples include my smart

watch, smart Goggles, Augmented and Virtual Reality, intelligent digital assistants and (sooner or later)

brain-computer interfaces BCIs and implants

Anticipation: software can now predict our behaviour, even crimes

Robotization: even many white-collar jobs will soon be done by robots

De-humanization: taking humans out of the equation by cutting a complex human task to its bare bones and

giving it to machines

Re-humanization: finally realizing that your customers don’t buy technology – they buy relationships!

Thus, brand value is defined by being more human, not less!

Software Development Career Paths: There are many career paths you can choose as a software developer. And --

just like a video game—there are paths within paths. Where you ultimately end up in your software development

career will be determined by the particular paths you choose. Choose the wrong path and you’ll end up a Kobold

writing COBOL for the rest of your life. Choose the right path and you just might become a white wizard or

architect, living in your ivory tower and bestowing edicts from on high. Ok, maybe it’s not quite like that. But your

career path choices do make a difference; they really do matter. Too many beginner programmers never take the

time to consider what their actual career paths are and to deliberately choose which path and which guild they want

to join. Instead, they just stand on the side roads shouting, “looking for a group,” and join any band of adventurers to

come their way who will have them. This post is all about making a conscious choice about which career path you

want to pursue as a software developer, and that begins with enumerating your options. Full Post

8 Ways to Reboot Your Software Development Career: Even if resolutions aren’t your thing, a new year still

represents a great opportunity to reflect on the past and plan for the future — in our professional pursuits as well as

our personal lives. For some, that may mean building upon the existing forward momentum in our career paths. For

others, that may mean reassessing and rebooting a career that seems to be treading water or simply missing

something. However your career is going, you’re sure to find something in these eight ideas to boost your software

development career. Our goal is not to just rehash the obvious, but to offer insightful, actionable advice that you can

Cyber-physical systems and smart cities: Learn how smart devices, sensors, and actuators are advancing Internet

of Things implementations. Smart devices are becoming more sophisticated with increased capabilities while they

remain a relatively low-cost technology. Also, many of these smart devices rely on the prevalence of high-speed

wireless networks, including 4G cellular networks. With the Internet of Things, every object can retrieve

information from the environment and then manage and share that information with other devices or users. The

synergy of computational and physical components, specifically the use of cyber-physical systems (CPSs), led to the

advancement of Internet of Things implementations. CPSs introduce cooperation among elements of the cyber and

physical space, by integrating computational resources. CPSs often support real life processes and provide

operational control of Internet of Things objects, which allow physical devices to sense the environment and modify

it. CPSs can boost the smart city vision by using information and communication technologies for more efficient and

effective resource management. Smart cities focus on providing innovative and better quality services to its citizens

by improving the infrastructure of the city while reducing the overall costs. Full Post

Guidelines for submitting reports and articles to get published in the IEEE MAS LINK newsletter

We are still getting the reports not adhering to the guidelines. While we write back to the SBCs and request them to

re-submit the reports as per the guidelines, some respond positively and quite a few do not. The editorial team is

constrained to ignore such reports. Further, it takes considerable time to communicate and keep track. Once again

we request all SBCs to follow the guidelines at https://goo.gl/bYB44p submitting the reports. Also, we are receiving

reports bunched up closer to the last date, 10th

of each month which again poses problems in reviewing them. We

request the reports are sent as soon as the event is completed. We also note that events that are not directly related to

IEEE are also sent to us for publishing which we may reject without informing the concerned SBs.
