Greetings to You!
This issue of April – May 2014 comes to you when mercury is at its peak and added to this 2014 General Election fuelled it still further to feel the heat of the season. I take this opportunity to congratulate you all for participating in large numbers in 2014 General Elections of Lok Sabha and voting for victory to a single party with alliance.
QCFI – Pariwar wishes all the best to the new Government for Good Governance & Development. We hope that they will put Industrial Development on the top priority for progressive economy. While I am writing this letter to you, I heard Prime Minister Designate Shri. Narendra Bhai Modi in his address at Varanasi emphasizing the need of "Clean City of Varanasi" and a target of 2019 to make India neat and clean.
Friends, you all know QCFI is serving the Nation with propagation of Quality Concepts including 5S (Work Place Management). QCFI has already planned to implement this concept for the city of Varanasi including its famous ghats. We assure you that we are with people in this new era.
While talking about the elections, you will find Election Notice for the Executive Board of QCFI along with Election Schedule for the Period 2014-2017.
Beside regular features like HQ and Chapters’ Activity Report, there are reports on special events with photographs organised by our Chapters / Centres. One such event is inauguration of QCFI Students Cell by Pune Chapter, the first of its kind in India. You will find reports on “Train The Trainers” programme organised by Hyderabad & Gwalior Chapters, the reports on 5-S Certification to NSPCL, CPP-2, Bhilai & SRICT, Ankleshwar and also for 5S Re-Certification to the power units of NTPC Ltd. Eastern Region – II, viz. Talcher Thermal Power Station & Talcher Super Thermal Power Station, Kaniha. QCFI-HQ conducted 2 days 5S Lead Auditor Programmes in Bengaluru and also at Ankleshwar. Reports can be seen.
We have reprinted the report on “National Seminar on Asset Management Towards Zero Break Down”, due to some errors found in the last issue.
We are publishing the ICQCC-2014, Colombo, Convention Tour details for information to participants to take due action for registration and make necessary preparations.
We lost forever QCFI fraternity Shri. P.C. Bihari, Shri K. Narayanan, Administrator - Coimbatore Centre and Smt. Devaki Bai mother of our collegue Shri G. Vijay Babu who expired on 15th May 2014. We express our heartfelt condolence for their untimely death and pray God to Rest the departed souls in peace.

During the question-answer session and panel discussion, the speakers addressed a number queries from the audience.
Out of three case studies presented, the Best Case study award was presented to Mr Bani Mukherjee of Bokaro Steel Plant.
During the concluding session, some of the participants from Bokaro Steel, Vedanta ,Uttam Galva, century Rayon, Ruchi Soya ,IPCA , RCF Ltd , Kokuyo Camlin etc shared their views about the seminar and thanked QCFI for selecting topics that concerned their area of work. The tone and tenor of all was "BAHOT JAGAH SEMINAR ATTEND KIYA LEKIN ITANA ACCHA KAHI BHI NAHI THA." They were happy that they could derive a pool of knowledge through this prestigious seminar.
Mr. Abir Banerjee also shared his views and complimented QCFI for their team work and for selecting excellent topics. Mr. KB Bharati, Chairman, QCFI Mumbai Chapter and Director, QCFI delivered concluding remarks. He thanked RCF Management& their volunteers for making the seminar successful. Mr. Jayant Malshe, Secretary, QCFI Mumbai Chapter compered two day seminar.
QCFI Mumbai Chapter, in collaboration with RCF Ltd, Trombay Unit, organized two day National Seminar on Asset Management Towards Zero Breakdown on 21st and 22nd February, 2014. Sixty delegates from Public and Private Sector Units participated in this seminar.
The seminar was inaugurated by Mr. HS Karangale, Director general of the Indian Chemical Council (ICC) In his brief inaugural address, Mr. Karangale emphasized the need to manage the asset management like human, knowledge, intelligence etc. apart from usual work equipments and machines. He said, management in the past was looked upon as “crisis management”; today the concept has changed to planning, study of history, acquisition and strategies. He further said, collective efforts and involvement of all concerned departments such as operations, materials, finance etc will help us achieve our objective towards zero breakdown.
Six eminent speakers – Mr. Anantha Subramaniam (Associate Director, Frost and Sullivan), Mr. Abir Banerjee, Executive Director, RCF Trombay Unit, Mr. AS Kashikar, GM (Maint), RCF Ltd, Mr. Rajendra Potdar, CEO and Founder, MABEC, Dr. Dibyenddu De, Director, Reliance Management Consultants Pvt Ltd, Mr. Jitendra Malhotra, General Manager (Business excellence) Aditya Birla Group, Mr.HarshadChhaya, Director, Business Development, IRD, Mechanalysis Ltd, Mr. Ajay Agarwal, Senior Advisor, Shell India Markets pvt. Ltd and Dr. TarapadaPyne, Head, RCF, JSW Ltd presented technical papers. Their presentations received thunderous applause from the participants. There was a Panel discussion on Centralized Maintenance and Decentralized Maintenance. Knowledge sharing in this was precise and precision. The Re-Certification Audits were performed by Sri.S. Srinivasan, Chairman, Certifying Committee and Dr. B.R. Bangray, Lead Auditor, QCFI.
Two units of NTPC Ltd in Eastern Region - II, viz. M/s. Talcher Thermal Power Station, an unit taken over by NTPC from Orissa State Electricity Board and the other M/s. Talcher Super Thermal Power Station, Kaniha, the second largest power producing unit of M/s. NTPC Ltd. have been Re-Certified for 5S (Work Place Management) implementation after conducting the Certification Audit from 10th - 12th Mar'14 & 13th - 15th Mar'14 respectively.
Both the units were first certified in the year 2004 & after a decade it was found that all the requirements are fulfilled by them to the satisfaction of auditors as per the laid down criteria.
Certificates were awarded to these units to sustain and improve further in the next three years. Both Heads of the Units were present respectively in their closing meeting to receive the award and assured untired efforts

Inauguration of QCFI Pune Chapter) Student Cell at Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE) was done by the auspicious hands of Mr. S. J. Kalokhe, Chairman, QCFI-Pune Chapter in the august presence of Dr. A. M. Fulambarkar, Principal PCCOE, Pune on 10th April 2014.
This is for the first time in India, PCCOE, Pune has taken a lead in forming the student cell of QCFI at the institute. 52 students for Mechanical Engineering department studying in second year, third year and final year of engineering are the members of Student Cell. These 52 students are life members of QCFI and
PCCOE, Pune is an Institutional Permanent member of QCFI.
Under this student cell, students of Mechanical Engineering have formed Quality Circles and are working on various problems identified by them. QCFI (Pune Chapter) is going to arrange a special training programme of total 30 hrs. duration on TPM, KAIZEN, QUALITY CIRCLE and 5S in the academic year 2014-15 for these 52 students at our institute by professionals in this field.
Dr. Sanjay S. Lakade, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, is the coordinator and facilitator for this student cell.

QCFI- Hyderabad Chapter Organized A 4-day Workshop On Training For Trainers From 14th to 17th April 2014 at Golden Park Hotel – Secunderabad .
This workshop was Inaugurated by the Chapter Chairman, Shri Ch. Balakrishna Rao . The Sessions on various topics related to Quality Circles , 5-S , Kaizen, etc. 58 personnel participated from 16 organizations.
The topics like Scatter Diagram, Histogram & Control Charts were taught by Shri D.K. Srivastava, ED, QCFI followed by syndicate exercises which were appreciated by one & all . The senior faculty members from hyderabad chapter and industries who took various sessions were S/Shri. B. Subramaniam , Vishal Karan , S. Srinivasan, P.V. Satyavratan , S. Venugopal Rao , K. Ravindranath , P S S Hanumantha Rao , Ramesh Babu & S.N. Guha . The programme was Co-ordinated by Shri D.K. Bhattacharya.
At the valedictory session certificates & gifts were distributed to all participants .
In NSPCL CPP-2 Bhilai, Certification Audit was conducted by QCFI on 07/04/14. On this occasion Shri D.K.Srivastava , Executive Director, QCFI has unfurled the 5S flag at CPP-2 premises. He performed audit for the implementation of 5S in all Zones of the plant and CPP-2 has awarded with 5S certificate by Chairman QCFI Bhilai Chapter, Shri Y.K.Degan during the certification ceremony. In the event various prizes were distributed to 5S competition winner and 5S zones for achieving distinguished result.

QCFI –HQ conducted a two day 5-S LEAD AUDITORS' TRAINING PROGRAMME on 18th & 19th April'14. 34 participants from PSUs, Corporates, MNCs attended and were benefited by the program. The program was conducted by Sri. D K Srivastava, Executive Director, QCFI.
The participants were divided into groups and were given tasks to be completed. The GM of the Bell hotel witnessed the presentation of the groups and appreciated the participants for giving good and implementable suggestions with solutions to the Hotel Bell. The Valedictory session was addressed by Dr. S
Devarajan, Sr. Vice-President, TVS Motor Co. Ltd, Hosur. The program was very interactive & practical.

QCFI Pariwar expresses with grief condolence on untimely demise of Shri P.C.Bihari, a committed, determined and devoted frater in the propagation of Quality Circle Movement in general and for students in particular.
Shri Bihari started Quality Circles in Diesel Locomotive Works (Northern Railways) Charbagh, Lucknow as a facilitator and then started Student's Quality Circle by name Jai Jagat at City Montessori School, Lucknow as mentor. The Student Quality Circle Movement has gone globally under his guidance and advise.After his retirement from Railways he
devoted his time fully for Students Quality Circles at International level as a Director-Trainee, International QC Academy. He was one of the organizers to conduct 16 International Conventions on Student's Quality Control Circles with a grand success. QCFI lost a QC practitioner and preacher.
Shri K. Narayanan, Administrator of QCFI Coimbatore Centre of Madurai Chapter died on 18th April 2014 due to heart attack.

We pray God Almighty to rest the departed souls in peace and also to give strength to their family members to bear this irrevocable loss.

The programme was attended by 45 participants from Industries & Institutions at Vataria, Vapi, Bharuch, Ankleshwar, Gandhidham, Vadodara & Ahmedabad. Three Life Members Dr.Mohit Kanwar,Shri Prakash Vaidya,Joint secretary QCFI-Vadodara Chapter and Mr.Ragesh Purohit who also was given an opportunity to make a presentation on Role of Lead Auditor.

Periodical 5S Surveillance Audit & Status Review was conducted at SAIL - Bhilai Steel Plant from 5th - 10th May'14 by Sri. V.K.B. Das, Dy. Director. In the Surveillance Audit along with Sri. Sunil Deshmukh, 5S Coordinator, all the Zones / Sub-Zones were found
satisfactory in the sustenance of 5S status.
In the Review Meeting, observations made in Surveillance Audit were discussed for corrective actions & improvements with Zonal Coordinators & Sub-Zonal Leaders in the presence of HODs.

Being an educational institute this is really a movement towards developing a good and responsible human being.
An audit was held for final Certification of FIVE S at SRICT-Shroff Rotary Institute Of Chemical Technology on 26th April 2014 by QCFI audit team; Mr D K Shrivastava, Mrs.Sudha Arun Mujumdar, Mr. Raju Modi and Mrs.Alka Kale.
All departments and sections of SRICT were found as per FIVE S standards and SRICT was awarded FIVE S Certificate in the closing meeting by Mr. D K Shrivastava, Executive Director in the August presence of Mr. Vijay Asar, Chairman, QCFI-Ankleshwar Centre, Mr. Ashok Panjawani, Vice-Chairman, ARES, Mr. Angiras Shukla, Hon. QCFI - Gwalior Chapter has organised a 4 days Train the Trainers programme on Quality Concepts & Problem Solving Techniques from 12th - 15th May' 2014. The programme was conducted by Sri. D.K. Srivastava, Executive Director, QCFI.
There were 25 participants from 11 organisations which includes industries & educational institutes. The programme was well appraised by all the participants.
The programme was inaugurated by Sri. Rajesh Chandra, GM, M/s. Godrej CP Ltd. & Sri. S.P. Bindal, Chairman, Gwalior Chapter Chaired the valedictory session. The dignitaries present in the programme were Mr. Ajay Shrivastava, Mrs. Rajeshwri Sawant, Principal of Gwalior Glory High School & Ms. Richa Verma, Registrar, Vikrant Group of Colleges.

A one day training workshop on lean QC was
organised by vadodara chapter and conducted by Mr.
D. K. Srivastava E.D. QCFI HQ on 27th April 2014 at
qcfi office training hall. This was the first training
workshop conducted at the new office premises.
The programme was attended by 21 participants from
different member organisations. The programme was
inaugurated by lighting of Lamp by Mr. D. K.
Sirvastava, Dr. Mohit Kanvar, Mr. Y. M. Nanavati

present.
Mr. Y. M. Nanavati delivered the welcome speech
followed by presenting bouquets to Mr. D. K.
Srivastava and Dr. Mohit Kanvar by Mr. S. P. Bakshi
Hon. Secretary Vadodara Chapter. Vote of thanks was
given by Mr. A. J. Vasavada at the end of the
Programme. Certificates were awarded to all
participants by Mr. D. K. Srivastava.
" Kaizen Mela was organised by Madurai chapter of QCFI
on 18-5-2014 . Before the kaizen Mela event out of 176
kaizens from various industries such as spinning mills,
weaving mills, knitting industry,Garment industry,cement
industry,engineering industry,Rubber industry,79
Kaizens were selected as best Kaizens. From 79 Kaizen

presentation.Panel of judges after seeing the
performance gave cash award to all the 23 Kaizens as
detailed here in.
First prize 6 from each category of industry Rs 8000/ each.
Second prize 9 from each category of indurtry Rs5000/ each.
Consolation prize 8 from each category of industry Rs 3000/each.
180 delegates participated and they were very
enthusiastic in learning Kaizens from other organisations.
The purpose of Kaizen Mela is to share the knowledge on
Kaizen,how the ideas were generated and also to
motivate the employees. This Mela will help to compile
live case studies relating to various industries on different
issues.
Mr. B. Balakrishnan, Vice President QCFI briefed the
participants about the purpose of Mela and gave a brief
talk on Kaizen by logical thinking and creative thinking
which has the source of causal nature, when one feels the
pain of others, need based and forced Kaizen. Mr.
Mohanakrishnan resource person gave inputs, live case
studies on Kaizen with Video Clippings. Earlier Mr. M.
Sankarasubramanian, Director QCFI welcomed the
gathering. Mr. W.S. Sathchidanandam presided over
valedictory function and cash awards were given to the
winners.
