Growing degree days are calculated by taking the average temperaturefor the day and subtracting the base temperature (50 degrees) from theaverage to assess how many growing days are attained.

Thursday morning, December 13, is when Geminid meteors should be flying at their maximum rates.Geminid activity has been on the rise since the shower’s discovery in 1862 because the orbit of thedross which produces its bright meteors has been shifting ever closer to Earth. Jupiter’s gravitationaltugs take responsibility. In 1877 rates of 17 meteors per hour were being witnessed, 27 meteors eachhour by the century’s end. During the twentieth century rates climbed to over 80 events per hour. When

I was a teen growing up in the 60’s beginning my journey in astronomy, the Geminids were a major event, but they stillpaled in contrast to the August Perseids. Now they surpass the Perseids, but are still less observed because of the cold andoften cloudy conditions which prevail in mid-December. Geminids are the best bet for observing meteor activity if theweather cooperates. They are also the only shower related to an asteroid. In 1983, 3200 Phaethon was discovered, and itsorbit was quickly connected with the Geminids. This gave credence to the belief that many short period comets endedtheir active days masquerading as minor planets. For North America, meteor activity should increase throughout the nightof December 12/13. The highest rates, perhaps as great as two meteors per minute, should be seen just before dawn. Youcan start observing as early as 10 p.m. Face east, but observe near the darker zenith. Geminids will be diverging upwardfrom the east. By 2 a.m., face south but continue to look towards the zenith. Geminids will appear to radiate from an areaof the sky near the bright star, Castor. Maps for both of these times are posted at www.astronomy.org. Observe a day ear-lier if weather conditions will be inclement on maximum night. After the morning of highest activity, rates decrease rapid-ly. Read about cold weather attire in last week’s StarWatch. Ad Astra! www.astronomy.org

A You might say each day is equally likely at 1 chance out of 5. But for a shrewder approach, try a “reductio” argument: Assume a Friday drill is planned. The problem here is that once Thursday

passes and still no drill, there would hardly be any surprise to Friday. So Friday can’t be the day. And then Thursday can’t be it either, because if Friday can’t be the day, then once Monday-Wednesday have passed, Thursday would have to be the day, and so no surprise. Therefore rule out Thursday. See what’s coming next? For similar reasons, Wednesday can’t be the drill day, nor can Tuesday or Monday. Likely conclusion: Management, wise in the ways of logic, is pulling a fast one. It wants the staff to report back that such surprise fi re drills are not possible, that this must be an “Are you on your toes?” test. So, were you on your toes?

Q At Logic Inc., management promises a “surprise” fi re drill in the coming week, Monday through Friday, to test the effi cacy of evacuation procedures. No one but the CEO knows which day it will be. Can you guess when the alarm will most likely ring?

(Family Features) When it comes to holiday entertaining, there is nothing more elegant - or easy - than serving a beautiful roast. The elegance factor we can all understand, but easy? It’s true. There is no need to be intimidated by a roast ever again.

Tender roasts are always cooked uncovered using dry heat methods, which results in producing the fl avorful, deep brown crusty exterior. It’s also important to allow the roast to rest before carving to ensure that the juices in the center have time to redistribute for maximum fl avor and tenderness. This recipe for Blue Cheese and Cabernet Sauvignon Demi Glace is easy to make and just the right touch for the perfect holiday roast.

Roast Buyer’s Guide Use this rule of thumb to determine how much meat you need to purchase per serving:-Boneless Roast: 1/2 pound, uncooked-Bone-In Roast: 1 pound, uncooked-Standing Rib Roast, also known as a Prime Rib Roast: allow 2 servings per rib

For a free “Great Gathering Guide and Cookbook” fi lled with delicious recipes from Omaha Steaks, call 1-800-228-9055, or visit www.OmahaSteaks.com.

Blue Cheese and Cabernet Sauvignon Demi Glace

Serves 4 to 6 1/2 teaspoon olive oil 2 tablespoons shallots, fi nely chopped 1 teaspoon garlic, fi nely chopped 1/2 cup Cabernet Sauvignon 1 cup Demi Glace* 2 ounces Maytag Blue Cheese, crumbled

In a sauce pan heat olive oil. Saute shallots and garlic until transparent.

Add Cabernet Sauvignon to pan and reduce by half. Add Demi Glace to pan and slowly bring to a boil. Stir in blue cheese.Serve with Beef Roast or Steak.*Demi Glace can be made from scratch or purchased from a specialty food store such as Omaha Steaks.

The Perfect Holiday RoastKids Holiday Recipes This holiday season, share some fun and laughter in the kitchen. Kids and adults alike will enjoy these fun food activities.

Snowball Cookies

1 cup butter or margarine • 1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted • 1 teaspoon vanilla 2-1/2 cups fl our, sifted • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup chopped pecans

Cream butter in large bowl. Add sugar, then cream until light and fl uffy. Stir in vanilla. Sift fl our and salt; mix in to butter mixture. Stir in nuts. Shape into balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees F. Roll in powdered sugar straight out of oven. Roll again when cool. Makes about 36 cookies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Holiday Wreaths

1/3 cup butter • 1 10.5-oz. package of large marshmallows6 cups cornfl akes cereal • 1 teaspoon green food coloring1/4 cup cinnamon red hot candies

Melt margarine in a large pan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir constantly until marshmallows melt and mixture is syrupy. Remove from heat. Stir in food coloring. Add corn fl akes and stir until well coated. Drop mixture by 1/4 cupful onto cookie sheet. Using buttered fi ngers, quickly shape into individual wreaths. Dot with cinnamon candies. Let cool completely.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Christmas Tree Appetizer

1 8-ounce block cream cheese • 1/4 cup prepared pesto sauce1 Tbsp. chopped red peppers • Cinnamon stick for garnish

Carefully remove the cream cheese from the foil wrapper. Cut it in half diagonally, turn the halves, and on a serving plate, press them together in a triangular shape to resemble a Christmas tree. Spread the pesto over the top of the cream cheese. Decorate with the chopped peppers. Insert the cinnamon stick at the base of the triangle for the trunk. If making ahead, store in the refrigerator, but remove 30 minutes before serving to soften the cream cheese. Serve with crackers.

Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous

tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

FAMILY FEATURES

The holidays are usually pretty hectic, and the last thing you need is to stress over shipping your holiday gifts. With millions of packages moving across the country every day, knowing how to pack and when to ship

your gifts can save you time and money, taking the hassle out of holiday shipping.

These tips from FedEx will help you ensure the safe and timely delivery of your holiday packages.

Smart Packing Tips Use new, sturdy boxes with the fl aps intact, and do not reuse

boxes. Select a box that is large enough to accom modate the proper thickness of cushioning material.

Wrap items individually with cushioning material and center them in cartons away from other items and away from the sides, corners, top and bottom of the box.

Choose cushioning of appropriate density and thickness, and use enough to fi ll all void spaces in your shipping container. Position at least two inches of bubble wrap, peanuts or other packing materials on all sides, and use a heavy duty tape designed for packaging.

Double-box fragile items with 3 inches of cushioning in and around the smaller box.

For odd- or irregular-shaped items, be sure to wrap and tape all sharp edges or protrusions.

Position the shipping label squarely on the most visible side of the container away from any folds or seams. Provide complete sender and recipient addresses, including zip codes and telephone numbers. Make sure the label is properly and securely attached. FedEx also recommends placing an extra label, business card or letterhead with the shipper’s address and phone number inside the package before sealing it.

Apply at least three strips of packing tape (no duct or masking tape) to the top and bottom sides of the container using the H taping method.

Don’t be afraid to ask for packing and shipping help. There are more than 1,800 FedEx Offi ce Print & Ship Center locations around the world that provide a variety of packing and shipping supplies and services.

Smart Shipping Tips Send your gifts ahead. If you are traveling this holiday season, take the hassle out of

carrying wrapped packages with you by sending your gifts ahead of your arrival. Ship early in the season. This will allow you to avoid the lines and provide you with a

greater selection of shipping service options. Take advantage of FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery, and FedEx Express Saver and 2Day services to save money on your shipments.

If you’re sending cookies or other sweet holiday gifts, make sure you pack them properly so that they don’t arrive as crumbs.Ingredients: 1 sturdy container for the baked goods 1 box of wax paper 1 roll of tape 1 sturdy corrugated cardboard box Bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts, plastic grocery bags or other packing materials

Directions: Place the baked goods in a sturdy con tainer lined with plastic wrap or wax paper. Layer wax paper between the baked goods, using crumpled paper to fi ll in any void spaces.

Secure the lid of the container to the body with tape, to keep it from accidentally popping off.

Place the container in a sturdy corrugated cardboard box, and use packing materials to cushion the container tightly in place.

Shake the box — if you can feel or hear any movement, add more cushioning.Baker’s Notes:

Don’t forget to include a card or sheet of paper with the shipper and/or recipient’s contact info on it. In case the shipping document gets lost, this information will help get the package to its destination.

When thinking about gift ideas, small or sturdier items like sugar cookies, biscotti and popcorn are some of the sweet treats that will ship the best.

Be sure to send your cookies early in the week so that they are still fresh when they arrive, as shipping may take up to 3 to 5 business days.

Your guide to hunting in northeastern Wyoming.

(Family Features) From family and friends to teachers and coaches, fi nding the perfect present for everyone on your list can be a daunting task. But with a little creativity, you can fi nd a great gift without breaking your budget.

Choosing the Perfect GiftThe key to fi nding the perfect present? Taking time to consider what your loved one most cherishes. Do they favor a specifi c hobby? How do they spend their free time? If you’re picking a gift for someone you might not know well, such as your child’s teacher or school nurse, consider giving them something to help them unwind and relax. Here are some ideas to get you started:

For teachers, school nurses and coachesThe role models in your child’s life are often the people that would benefi t most from a pampering present. Help them indulge in some relaxation by packaging up a basket of spa-inspired items. Moisturizing beauty products with seasonal scents - such as the Softsoap Wintermint Wonderland and Enchanting Sugar Plum body washes - will keep skin smooth and glowing throughout the season’s festivities and conjure up images of favorite winter memories. Bundle with a lush loofah, mini manicure and pedicure kit, facial mask and lotion for a basket fi lled with items that will give them the opportunity to treat themselves to a little “me” time. Homemade treats and photo collages are also great gift options.

For cooking and baking enthusiastsFor your favorite foodie, consider giving some fun and affordable kitchen tools, such as ninja gingerbread cookie cutters. If your loved one is known for their savory cuisine, consider purchasing an assortment of spices to add to their favorite dishes. Likewise, a new cookbook will help inspire creativity in the kitchen and add a dash of excitement to their regular recipe routine.

For travel loversFor those on your list who love to hit the road and explore new territories, consider gifts that will make their travel more enjoyable. Passport covers, camera accessories, travel journals, or a mini alarm clock are all great options that won’t break the bank. You can also give them items that will remind them of their explorations. Put together a gift basket of exotic chocolates and shelf-safe foods to

remind them of their favorite fl avors from abroad. Or you can remind them of one of the best parts of travel - the feeling of relaxation and getting away. Body washes with a refreshing scent, such as the new moisturizing Softsoap Citrus Splash & Berry Fusion, will transport recipients to warm days and exotic locales. Combine with a selection of personal care products, such as facial masks and moisturizers to help them transform their bathroom into a mini-vacation abroad.

For the kiddosWhen purchasing gifts for very young children, look for brightly colored toys that play music or offer an interactive element. Stuffed animals, baby blankets and clothing are great options as well.

For adolescents, teens and in-be-tweensIt’s hard to stay on top of the trends most pre-teens and teenagers are in tune with. Instead, opt for something you know they’ll enjoy. Consider giving a gift certifi cate to a movie theater or popular store where they can purchase electronics, clothing or sporting equipment. If you have your heart set on a tangible present, remember to request a gift receipt, just in case. FAMILY FEATURES

T his year, pop up some holiday fun by making these clever — and delicious — popcorn treats. With these recipes it’s easy to create edible décor, gifts for friends and neighbors, and munchable snacks for the whole family. You

can fi nd more creative holiday recipes at www.popcorn.org.

Popcorn TrioYield: Varies Cheesy Popcorn 6 cups popped popcorn 1 tablespoon melted butter, optional 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast or brewer’s yeast (found at health food stores) 1/2 teaspoon curry powder, optionalCaramel Popcorn 6 cups popped popcorn 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon light or dark corn syrup 1 tablespoon water 2 tablespoons butter 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extractPlain PopcornCover bottom of 3 to 4-quart pan with thin layer of vegetable oil.

Place 3 kernels of popcorn in pan; cover with a loose lid that allows steam to escape, and heat.

When kernels pop, pour in enough popcorn to cover bottom of pan, one kernel deep; cover pan and shake to evenly spread oil.

Shake as popcorn continues to pop. When popping begins to slow to a few

seconds apart, remove pan from stovetop. The heated oil will still pop remaining kernels.

Sprinkle lightly with popcorn salt, if desired, and store in an airtight container. Cheesy PopcornFollow instructions for making Plain Popcorn.

When you remove popcorn from heat, transfer popcorn to serving bowl. Pour butter over popcorn and toss. Sprinkle yeast and curry powder, if desired, over popcorn and toss to distribute evenly.

Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.Caramel PopcornLine large baking sheet with lightly buttered foil.

In medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup and water and bring to a boil.

Cook syrup over medium heat, without stirring, until amber in color; about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter, salt and vanilla until blended.

Stir in popcorn until coated. Spread caramel corn in a single layer onto but-tered foil.

Allow to cool before breaking into pieces. Store in an airtight container until serving time.

Holiday Popcorn SnowmanYield: 10 balls, 5 snowmen (2 balls each) 1 1-pound package large marshmallows 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 10 cups popped popcorn Decorations: sprinkles, licorice, gum drops, cinnamon candies, cookies, etc.Melt marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

Let stand for 5 minutes.Pour over popcorn and stir.Butter hands well and form popcorn

into balls. Decorate as desired. Festive Popcorn Trees

Yield: 10 trees 10 cups air-popped popcorn 1 10-ounce bag miniature marshmallows 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Decorating sugar (green, blue)* 1 tube of white frosting (with decorating tip) Assorted small colorful candies, such as sprinkles and miniature silver dragées Place popcorn in large bowl.

Place marshmallows and butter in medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.

Stir in vanilla extract.Pour mixture over popcorn in bowl. Toss

well to coat popcorn evenly.Line baking sheet with foil.Spray hands with nonstick cooking spray,

then scoop up about 1 cup of popcorn mixture.Shape mixture into a cone shape, keeping

the base fl at. This forms the tree.Sprinkle tree with decorating sugar; place

tree on baking sheet. Make the rest of the trees.

Pipe frosting on trees to make a gar land, then decorate them with colorful candies.

Serving suggestion: Place each tree on a sugar or gingerbread cookie, and dec orate your serving tray with shredded coconut to resemble snow.

Notes: It’s important that this recipe starts with unfl avored white popcorn for best color

and fl avor.*Make your own colored sugar by ad ding

food coloring to sugar, stirring in a bowl or shaking vigorously in a sealed container. Add more food coloring for more intense tones.

Holiday Wreath Popcorn TreatsYield: 8 5-inch wreaths 3 quarts popped popcorn 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter or margarine 3 cups miniature marshmallows 3 tablespoons (1/2 of a 3-ounce box) lime gelatin dessert mix Decorations: small red candies, jellybeans, red fruit leather, etc.Spray large mixing bowl lightly with cooking spray and place popcorn inside.
