Benefits of Fish Oil: PART I

Dr. Clay S. Runyan is a chiropractor who operates businesses in Spearfish, SD and Gillette, WY. He works with the chronically ill, those with back and neck pain especially considering disc related issues. His offices can be reached at 1-800-426-8711 or 605-642-7111. He has the areas’ only authentic decompression tables. He can be reached at [email protected] or [email protected].

Yeah thou I walk through the valley of death .. I shall also take my fish oil.

Every day as I rise I give thanks for being able to get up and enjoy another day. However, I don’t stop there. I also attempt to ‘keep my temple in order’ by taking Omega 3 Fatty Acids (hereafter known as: OFA’s).

The research behind OFA’s is astounding. One of the most beneficial therapeutic effects that they have is creating anti-inflammation. Put side by side next to celebrex and viox (Cox II inhibitors), which create pain relief by reducing inflamma-tion, the OFA’s had just as effective response as the pharmaceuticals without the negative side effects.

Now let me ask … Do I want to reduce inflam-mation but have negative side effects which could lead to premature death or do I want an anti-inflammatory that gives nothing but positive side effects?

Some of the positives besides reducing inflam-mation are: decreased triglycerides, supple skin, improved brain function and joint lubrication. There are many more and they are also ALL positive.

But why worry about inflammation anyway? It is known in the scientific circles that: Disease states require inflammation to proliferate. Does that mean that if I were not inflamed that whatever genetic code I have for early demise will be less likely to occur?

YES! Consequently, we should all be thinking how can I stay ‘Deflamed?’

For OFA’s to be really effective, they have to be taken in specific concentrations. Let’s look at that now.

Many folks already take ‘fish oil’ capsules. The thing I see most, as a complementary health care giver, is that the amount of OFA’s “within the fish oil” is insufficient in the average consumer to get anti-inflammatory results.

The recommendation is 2.5-3 grams (G) per day of EPA and DHA (the OFA’s). So it is more than just 1-2 capsules per day (that are usually 1 gram/G each). You have to look at the concentra-tion of the OFA’s within that 1000mg capsule. A typical retail store brand will have 300mg of the OFA’s in that 1000mg capsule.

Consequently, you would need 8-10 capsules of the non-concentrated form of fish oil to get the amount needed to act as an anti-inflammatory. Therefore, I recommend buying a concentrated form of fish oil. A good concentration would be 700mg of EPA & DHA per 1000mg capsule of fish oil.

Face it - - nobody wants to be that oily. If you can get the amount of EPA & DHA to create anti-inflammation in the body, without getting your pillow case oil stained - - why wouldn’t you?

That’s all for now. Next article will be about OFA’s and Brain Function.
