CORNWALL PIPING UPABOUT ONTARIO’S TAR SANDS PIPELINE -Concerned residents of Cornwall have theopportunity to attend an info forum onNovember 6th at the Benson Centre to discussEnbridge’s plans to pump 300,000 barrels of oiland bitumen from the Alberta tar sands everyday through southern Ontario’s relativelyunknown Line 9 pipeline. The Line 9 info forumwill begins at 7 PM in the McEwen Room of theBenson Centre. Environmental Defence Canada’sclimate and energy campaigner SabrinaBowman from along with environment andenergy writer Derek Leahy will provide ‘need-to-know’ information about Line 9. “This info forumis a must for everyone who wants to be informedabout the environmental repercussions of thechanges to Line 9 and recognizes the importanceof environmental safeguards in the transport ofhazardous materials”, says City Councillor ElaineMacDonald. “A proper third-party independentassessment of Line 9 is really the best way to findout what the risks and dangers are if shippingbitumen through Line 9 is approved. Thepipeline has never transported heavy crudessuch as bitumen”, says Derek Leahy, co-presenterat the Line 9 info forum in Cornwall on November6th. The Benson Centre is located at 800 SeventhStreet West in Cornwall. The Line 9 info forum isopen to all members of the public and begins at7 PM. Letters &OpinionMP GUY LAUZON WRITESABOUT OPENING CANADATO NEW MARKETS - Today, with one in five Canadianjobs dependent on exports, our prosperity hinges on opening new markets forCanadian goods, services and investment. We arean exporting nation and many of our jobs righthere in Stormont- Dundas- South Glengarrydepend on exports. Prime Minister Stephen Harperrecently announced that Canada has reached anagreement in principle on a trade agreement withthe European Union. This is the biggest dealCanada has ever made. Whether you are a farmer inDundas, a factory worker in Cornwall, an automechanic in Glengarry, a tourist operator inStormont, or a business owner anywhere- you willbenefit from the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement. It will open new markets to Canadian exportersthroughout Europe and generate significantbenefits, jobs and opportunities for all Canadians. The signing of this agreement is an important stepfor Canada’s continued prosperity and it will have ahuge impact on our local economy. OurConservative Government will continue to focus oncreating jobs and opportunities for all Canadiansincluding those who live in SDSG.

MPP JIM MCDONELLADDRESSES YOUTHEMPLOYMENT - MPP JimMcDonell responds toyouth employment. TheOntario PC Caucus is callingPremier Wynne out on hergovernment’s record onyouth unemployment. “Ontario’s young peopledeserve a government that will open upopportunities, not one that drives upunemployment and makes empty promises,” saidPC MPP Vic Fedeli, the Ontario PC Finance Critic.Despite promises contained in last year’s Budgetand Premier Wynne’s latest announcements on ayouth employment strategy, many Ontario youthsstruggle to find work and training in the provinceand are forced to move. Youth unemployment inOntario has risen to 16.4%, a figure even theGovernment has admitted to. “Over one in sevenOntario youths are without work due to a decade ofLiberal job-killing policies that shut doors to tradesapprenticeships, drove manufacturers out and bledjob-creators dry through red tape and punitivetaxation” – said MPP Jim McDonell. “In a gesture ofpolicy leadership, we cleared the decks so KathleenWynne could bring forward her plan for jobs, orsteal ours if she didn’t have one. Instead, she’sserving Ontarians a re-heated portion of stalerhetoric and empty promises.” “Ontario needssolutions, not more talk; Ontario PCs have outlineda clear path to growth” – McDonell concluded. “TheLiberals’ indifference is worse than not having aplan. It’s doubling down on an approach that’sfailed young people in our area of Stormont,Dundas and Glengarry for ten years. That’s why it’stime to change the team that leads this province. ”

Safe Travels...

I am as restless as my cat this morning, and aftertrying to fall back asleep, I finally gave up the battle, made a pot of coffee and started my morning at amuch earlier time slot than usual. It could be thatthis morning is the time I know I am saying goodbyeto my niece/God-daughter as she embarks on her

new adventure.

Monika Latour, accepted a full-time nursing position in Houston Texas, andthis past weekend, I spent time with her and my sister Lisa, packing the lastof her apartment. After a nice supper out last Friday, we agreed to meet atMonika's place on Saturday. I picked up the coffee, and after an extendedbreak, the last of her closets and cupboards were cleared. The weather wasquestionable so I encouraged them to stay until Sunday, which they did, andthe 3 of us enjoyed a movie night at my place. The next morning I headedback over to pick up a few things and see them off. Her dad Paul and hisfriend picked up the furniture which will be staying behind with her parents. It took her a long time to pick out that large sectional couch and now shehas to leave it behind.

Monika returned to pick up the last of her things on Wednesday and stayedwith me, so as I write this she's snuggled up in the spare room and I had theopportunity to spend some one on one time with her before she left. It isbittersweet to see her go, after all, this is a great opportunity for her career-wise, but I will miss her. Since moving here last fall, I was able to reconnectwith her and that alone made the move to Kingston worthwhile. She's myonly family here and we have spent some quality time together. Sure we willstay connected versus social media, but it is not the same as calling her ortexting her and heading out for dinner, a movie, a concert or over to watcha movie or show. I am so pleased that she joined me and Brad last Christmas. She left me her lounge chair and patio table, her assortment of Davidsonteas and some open bottles, and great memories.

I worry about my loved ones but this is a passage of time and she has to follow herheart. As I glanced at my older sister while she was visiting, I can only imagine what sheis thinking. This is her baby, her first, and when she gave birth to her 26 years ago, wealmost lost Lisa. Maybe this is why Monika felt the calling to be a nurse, because thenurses, doctors and paramedics who valiantly worked to save her mom's life. Texas islucky. They are getting a bright star, who worked hard throughout her school years, excelling in all subjects, winning accolades and balancing a busy work schedule.Cornwall is no stranger to this lifeguard as she spent most of her teens and earlytwenties working for Parks and Rec. She swam competitively as well was in theCornwall Sea Lions, so when I viewed her incredible new place in Texas online, I saw thephotos of the spectacular pool and I am sure in no time she will be back in the water, which is second nature for her.

I am so glad I got the chance to spend this time with her before she leaves. I do hope Ican visit her in the next year or so, but no matter what, I wish her safe travels in her newset of wheels. She is leaving with only a handful of things and her clothes, it will be along journey, and I wish her well. Safe travels my dear Monika. Now I know sheregularly reads my column online when the Seeker is posted, I forewarned her it wouldbe about her. She probably thinks I'll write about the characters we encountered while

moving her, the shopping cart, the time she was stuck in the parking lot at KGHand I had to rescue her or the fact that she would drive us downtown, knowing Ican get lost anywhere, but she also has to remember that I have a really sappyside. I never had a daughter, but I am proud to say I have 3 nieces. Monika, whois exactly 20 years younger and is a July baby just like me, from pigtails to scrubs, will always mean the world to me. xo

Feeling Good Will ImproveYour Relationship

We all want to feel good. I don’t think manypeople wake up every morning hoping for ashit day but somewhere between themoment our eyes open and the second werealize we overslept by half an hour, ourfeelings fade from optimistic to positively

negative. We spill our coffee, we get stuck intraffic, we miss deadlines at work, but why is this making you feel

like garbage? Why is this bringing you down and affecting your mind, your outlook, and your relationship?

It’s inevitable that shit will happen, that’s life after all right? We wouldn’tknow how good the roses smelt if we never got a whiff of the fertilizerthey grew in once in a while. Little do you know that when you let all thatexcess garbage affect your mood, you’re not only putting your health injeopardy but your relationship too. You probably spend a lot of time withyour partner so don’t you think your stinky attitude is gonna startannoying him eventually? Relationships are supposed to be fun, happy, loving but how can you get there if you’re constantly being a downer?

When you’re always negative, you aren’t living your best life and youaren’t any fun to be around. People like surrounding themselves withhappy people who don’t sweat the small stuff because it’s these peoplethat make others feel good. Why do you think the most popular peopleare the ones you are always smiling and laughing? Surrounded bygroups of people or just one or two friends, happy people shine and theyattract good things because they aren’t fazed by stuff they have nocontrol over. No wonder these people have better relationships; theirsignificant other likes spending time with them ‘cause they aren’t alwaysin a pissy mood.

Yeah, even the happiest people will get mad sometimes or be pissed if acar drives by and splashes dirty rain water over a new outfit. But you caneither deal with it and laugh it off or hold onto that shitty feeling and letit affect your whole day, then bring it home and annoy your significantother with it. Yes, we like to tell our partners everything but you have toremember, they’re humans too and they may be getting sick of beingyour sounding board, day in and day out.

Also, if you’re always a downer you may notice that you just don’t feel good, physically. It’s a hard job being a negative person and it will start taking a toll onyour health eventually. If you turn that frown upside down you might just noticeyou’ll have more energy and drive, which is usually an attractive quality in a partner. You want to feel your best so that when you look in the mirror you know that youare beautiful. You should always, always feel beautiful--you ARE, after all. But whenyou actually FEEL good about yourself, your partner will notice and want to jumpthose sexy bones of yours.

Your relationship depends on your mood and if it’s been hard lately, maybe it’s timefor you to start working on yourself and figure out what’s making you so mad. If it’syour partner who’s the grump, mention it to them and let them know you only wantpositive vibes within the confines of your partnership. Its sounds a lot simpler thanit is, I know, but that’s why you have to work on it--just like you have to work onother parts of your relationship. It’s equally important to work on your own being. You owe it to yourself and your partner, so stop pretending you’re a positive personand start truly living a positive life, your future self will thank you.

TINY TABLE“Tiny Table, for a tiny restaurant” owner, chef andwaitress Ubon Sattaboot told me today as I walkedinto her quaint, little diner. My first opinion uponentering was that the restaurant was indeed verysmall, which only made the name more suitable. The musicthat playedwas calming

and peaceful. The beautifuldécor set a relaxed mood. I felt verycomfortable and at home themoment I walked in.

Upon entering, my four year oldson and I were offered a free cup ofJasmine tea, and I was given a menu to take home with me. The firstthing I noticed was that the menu was bilingual. Second, was the bold, plain, easy to read writing. And third, that the writing on the top of themenu was stating –Gluten Free. Anyone with a severe food allergyknows that diningout can be quitethe chore, and verydangerous.

I asked for asuggestion onwhat to eat. Ms.Sattaboot offeredthe Gluten-freepho (said Phaw). Itwas delicious. Ishared the dishwith my littleguest who lovedit, and we still hadplenty left over. Iwas full at the endof my meal, and Ifelt as though Isuddenly hadenergy, which is

uncharacteristic for whenyou eat out. Often it’s thereverse, you eat dinner outand afterward you arestuffed, and exhausted.

At the end of my meal, therewas live entertainment onthe bongo drums! My songladly danced to the musicthat Santo- Ms.Sattaboot’shusband played. He was even allowed toplay one of the little bongo drums.

Then, dessert was served. We tried both ofthe home-made cakes that they had tooffer. They were so mouth-watering thatmy little boy made room for a secondhelping!

This was definitely one of the best meals Ihave ever had. It was relaxing, fun, inexpensive and delicious. Definitely amemory worth cherishing! I will be going back soon.

Way back in 2001, I received this e-mail.You can file this in your memory bank forfuture use. I can't believe it is Novemberalready! Just seven weeks untilChristmas! I hope these tips will be ofsome use to you. I found many to bequite informative. Some I already knewof.

-Stuff a miniature marshmallow in thebottom of a sugar cone to prevent icecream drips.

-Use a meat baster to "squeeze" your pancake batter onto your hotgriddle and you will get perfectly shaped pancakes. You can alsomake alphabet letters using the baster.

-To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with thepotatoes.

-To prevent egg shells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the waterbefore hard boiling the eggs.

-Run your hands under cold water before pressing Rice Krispies treatsin the pan and the marshmallow won't stick to your fingers.

-To get the most juice out of a fresh lemon, bring it to roomtemperature and roll it under your palm of your hand on the kitchencounter before you begin to squeeze out the juice.

-To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a dropof two of dish soap and enough water to cover the bottom of the pan,and bring to a boil on the stovetop.

-Spray your Tupperware with non-stick cooking spray before pouringin any tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains on yourTupperware.

-When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of thedry cke mix instead of plain flour and there won't be any white messon the outside of the baked cake. This must apply to a chocolate cake.

-If you accidentally over salt a dish while it is still cooking, drop in a peeled potatoand it will absorb the excess salt for an instant fix-me-up.

-Wrap celery in a sheet of aluminum foil when placing it in you fridge's crisper drawer. Thecelery will keep crisp for weeks. This really works! I have been doing this for years.

-Brush some beaten egg white over your pie crust before baking your two-crust pie. You willhave a beautiful glossy finish to your pie. I sprinkle just a bit of sanding sugar over top of theegg glaze for sweet-filled pies.

-Place a slice of fresh apple into a bag of hardened brown sugar. It will help to soften the sugar.

-Whe boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to the water. It will help to bring out the corn'snatural sweetness. I do this too!

-To determine if an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh, but if it rises to the surface, throw it away.

-A cure for headaches: Take a lime and cut it in half. Rub it on your forehead. The throbbing willgo away.-Don't throw out all that leftover wine, freeze it in ice cube trays for future use in casseroles andsauces.

-If you have a problem opening jars: Try using latex dishwahing gloves. They will give anon slip grip that makes opening the jar easier.

-Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and rub a raw potato on the stainsand rinse with cold water.

-Top get rid of an itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the affected area and youwill get instant relief.

-Ants, ants everywhere: Well they are said to never cross a chalk line. So get out yourchalk and draw a line on the floor where ants tend to march. See this for yourself.

-Use an air freshener to clean your mirrors. It does a food job and better still, leaves alovely smell to the shine.

-When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to tweezers of aneedle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, then pull it off. Scotch tape removesmost splinters painlessly and easily.

-See what you can do with Alka-Seltzer: Clean a toilet. Drop in 2 Alka-Seltzer tablets andwait 20 minutes, just brush and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action cleansvitreous China.

-Clean a vase. To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water

NATURALLY DELICIOUS... with the Health Nut CORNWALL ROYALS

ALL TIME ALL-STARSEvery now and then, local hockey fansreminisce about the Cornwall Royals. That’s the three time Memorial Cup winningRoyals. Even though there’s a generation oflocal hockey fans that never saw the Royalsplay, their parents and grandparents remindthem of some of the great names thatdonned a Royals jersey.

To help spur that trip down memory lane, here’s a list of All Stars fromthe QMJHL and the OHL (their NHL careers also play a factor in my list).Remember, this is strictly my opinion, not an official list.

Let’s start in goal with Billy Smith. He’s the same Hockey Hall of Famerwho backstopped the New York Islanders to four Stanley Cups whilealso being the first NHL goalie to be credited with a goal. Honorablemention to Richard Brodeur.

On the blue line, Bob Murray leads the charge. The 17-year NHL veteranspent his entire career playing for the Chicago Black Hawks. He’s nowthe GM of the Anaheim Ducks.

His defence partner would be Mathieu Schneider. He scored morethan 740 points while playing in more than 1200 NHL games withseveral teams. Schneider also won a Stanley Cup with the 1993Montreal Canadiens.

Honorable blue line mentions are Dave Ezard and John Slaney.

The forwards are where the Royals really left a mark, not only inCornwall but everywhere they played.

Hockey Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk is the most obvious choice up front. The two time Memorial Cup winner scored more than 1400 points in a 16 yearcareer which included a couple of appearances for his country during CanadaCups in 1987 and 1991.

Doug Gilmour would be another “in your face” choice (even though he playedcentre like Hawerchuk). Gilmour spent 20 years in the NHL picking more than1400 points and a Stanley Cup (’89 with Calgary). Gilmour also set a then OHLrecord with a point in 55 straight games.

Rounding out the forward unit would be former 1st Overall NHL Draft pick forQuebec Owen Nolan.

The 5 time NHL All Star scored more than 400 goals over 19 seasons with anumber of clubs.

Honorable mentions at forward include Ray Sheppard and Dan Daoust.

Patient River Kings fans were finally rewarded with an impressive home opener.

But River King killer Francis Charette spoiled the party, scoring two goals to lead thedefending champion Jonquière Marquis to a 5-2 victory on Saturday night at the CivicComplex. Former River Kings goaltender Fred Piché earned the win in goal for theMarquis.

From a laser show to start the night, to a trumpeter in the stands, to live acousticmusic during intermission, 2,453 fans were treated to an entertaining evening fromstart to finish.

Jonquière opened the scoring at 8:56 of the first period on a powerplay goal by HugoCarpentier. Then, Alex Bourret took off on a shorthanded breakaway and ignited the crowd with a nifty deke on Piché to even the score a few minutes later.

Francis Lessard put the River Kings up 2-1 at 4:55 of the second period when hebanged a rebound into an open net for a powerplay marker. But, Charette evened thescore moments later when he squeaked one past Loic Lacasse.

Bruno St. Jacques scored on a rocket from the point with two seconds left in thesecond period to give Jonquière a 3-2 lead heading into the dressing room. The back-breaking powerplay marker beat Lacasse top shelf.

In the third, Charette spun and fired a shot past Lacasse at 6:10 to open up a two-goal lead and with 87 seconds to play, Marco Charpentier iced it for the Marquis withan empty netter. Simon Laliberté chipped in three helpers for Jonquière, whichoutshot Cornwall 30-27.

Charette (first), Bourret (second) and Piché (third) were the announced stars. The River Kings (1-2-1) next home game is Sunday, Nov. 3 when Sorel-Tracy visits theEd Lumley Arena. (3 p.m. start).

HEARTBREAKER IN SAINT-GEORGESOn Friday night in Saint-Georges, Samuel Grenache scored with four seconds left inregulation as the Kings were dealt a heartbreaking 5-4 loss. The evening closed offwith Ottawa’s original The Goodluck Assembly, who performed atBluesfest this past summer. Jukebox Pete provided music and karaoke, which ran until midnight with singers performing everything from rock nroll to 90s pop.

There was more than just musical entertainment. The silent auction hadover 50 donated items, including a one year Physical Limits VIP fullmembership, an electric chain saw from JT Sport, and eco-friendly faceand body products from Green Beaver.

Angie Parker, Founder and Director of Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm, wasimpressed with the turnout. “I started this organization only five monthsago. Word has spread quickly. I am very grateful for such amazingsupport.” The former television producer and magazine editor attendedFARM’s Animal Rights Conference in Washington, DC in July to learn moreabout animal rescue. “I met so many remarkable people who have animalrescues in the States, including Jenny Brown of Woodstock FarmSanctuary and Scotlund Haisley of Animal Rescue Corps. I learned somuch about animal care, as well as charity and grant applications, andbusiness organization.”

Even though Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm is only five months old, theorganization has been receiving tremendous support. “The Farm has sixboard members and twenty volunteers. These volunteers help witheverything from animal fostering, specialty animal advising, maintenance, promotion, social media and fundraising.” The new notfor-profitorganization currently only has a few animals since most of their rescueshave been adopted or are in foster homes. However the Farm alsoprovides behaviour advice, as well as helps other rescue organizationsfind homes for abused, abandoned and neglected animals.

Angie has big plans. “I am ready for this. The Farm’s board of directors isready for this. Our volunteers are ready. I am very excited for the Farm togrow. We want to take in all animals. The Farm will also be a retirementhome for animals who are unable to or cannot be adopted out. We alsowant to assist with the feral cat populations in Glengarry and Cornwall bycatching, spay and neutering and releasing.”

A Night of Live Music for the Animals also provided an opportunity toshowcase Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm and present deserving awards.
