There are still several Webinar seminars left this year and probably more will be added by leader Tom Brown. There is also an archive of past ones that members may feel are of interest. Your editor knows that things connected with PR are not of primary interest even though they are of primary concern and value. Take a webinar and you may find you are interested after all. It is not necessary to submerge yourself, only get involved in some small piece.

Image is heavily influenced by social media. The link between image and foundation may be less obvious, but again, the Club’s image and visibility bolsters Rotary and Foundation images alike. Along with public education about Rotary, it is critical to attracting new members. (One plus the number leaving is the minimal yearly goal.) Website The governor also participated in publicizing of the start-up of the club’s new website. Tweaking of the site will go on for a while and a member training session will be scheduled. The Club thanks the new company for its assistance with this important project. See p. 1 for a photo of Micro Bison Web Solutions’ Spencer Smith and Courtney Miller. Rotaract College at Brockport Rotaract leaders were introduced to the governor. President Juan Delgado and Vice president Taylor McCoy also had a pho taken with DG Gormont. (See p.2).’
SEPTEMBER’S CLUB MEMBER PROFILE – JOHN EGAN John Egan joined the club in 2009 and has already been through the officer ranks (President 2013-14) and was an Irv Kropman honoree for service in 2011. John has been someone who can find out or find somebody who can find out anything. He gets things done. Maybe it the engineering background, or having the fortitude to create a private company, Egan Electronic Designs. An independent spirit he enjoys running his own show and the additional freedom to go hunting and fishing (twin passions of his). If it has legs, he hunts it (elk, bears, deer, etc.). He also enjoys opportunities to have fun with friends and and relatives who accompany him on his junkets. Wife Molly has been known to accompany him sometimes – fishing for example. He also raises a pig or two for consumption. John loves to barbeque as demonstrated at Rotary food concessions and the annual steak roast. The Egan’s live in rural Town of Sweden. Currently John is the new Club program chair: succeeding his friend and Rotary sponsor and neighbor George Dahl. peb

DG Gormont, Continued
Rochester Rotary President Sarratori, Continued
President Macpherson, Continued
Rochester Rotary Club president Pete Sarratori, who honchoed the Camp Sunshine Treehouse from beginning to end, gave the members the backstory on the project. He contacted what are known as the “Tree House Guys” from DIY TV (prior to that association), called in people to help and donate. The privately funded results were shown on TV. Mostly the building was by local members and volunteers who actually went to Oregon at times for training because the experts were working on more than one show at a time. He also referred to the new Sensory Center where children have a chance to “run off some steam.” See page 7 for Camp Sunshine photos taken by your editor at the recent Open House.
The Club welcomed Brockport College president, Dr. Heidi Macpherson and her husband, Dr. Allan Macpherson. The President spent time explaining why she came to Brockport as well as her history as a professor and administrator in Great Britain for over two decades. She also described some of the many programs and other initiatives underway at the College at Brockport. One that people do not often note is the foreign scholars abroad. Not only does the college send about 50 abroad each year but the handle the arrangements for many students from other area and regional colleges. The destinations are located throughout the world – Japan to England. She also indicated her willingness to visit the club again (Dr. Allan also was invited back to speak on his exploits in the military or any topic he wishes.

Paul Harris was a very wise man who is quoted widely. “If this Rotary of ours is destined to be more than a mere passing thing, it will be because you and I have learned the importance of bearing with each other’s infirmities, the value of toleration.” — Rational Rotarianism, The National Rotarian, January 1911
ROTARY'S WHEEL EMBLEM Where Did It Originate?
The wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association." A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.
Where Did Rotary Get Its Name?
Rotary got its name from its habit of moving meetings from office to office.
