Vol. 61 No. 11 July 2012 Sivan–Tammuz 5772 Shofar Tisha B'Av is an ancient observance which recalls the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. The First Temple was destroyed in the year 586 B.C.E. by the Babylonians, and the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in the year 70 C.E. A number of other calamities have occurred on that particular day. The day is the 9 th of Av, and this year that day falls on Saturday night, July 28 th and continues until sunset, July 29 th . Traditionally, this day has been observed by engaging in a 24 hour fast, much like the fast observed on Yom Kippur. The fast commemorates the travail experienced by the Jewish people due to the destruction of our Holy Sites, and the centuries of anti- Semitism which has characterized our past experiences. Communities have gathered on the night of Tisha B'Av in order to sit within a dimly lit room, and read the Book of Lamentations. Lamentations is found in the third section of the Hebrew Bible, and it recounts that mournful day when the First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians. That First Temple was a glorious testament to God which was built during the reign of King Solomon, the son of King David. The religious observance within that Temple, like the philosophy of Judaism, was to affirm the God's compassionate love of humanity and our resolve to advance justice and mercy within the world in which we live. Yet, alas, the forces of evil, prejudice, and hatred momentarily prevailed and the Temple was destroyed and the Jewish people were swept into exile. Since that day, we the Jewish people have observed this day with an eye toward hope. therefore, as in the past, we will gather on Tisha B'Av in order to pray, to sit together at a table, lit by small candles amidst a dimly lit room, and read sections of the Book of Lamentations. Yet in addition, we will discuss and read a few sections of the book: "The Brigade, an Epic Story of Vengeance, Salvation, and World War II." This remarkable book is a true story about a group of Jewish soldiers who wear upon their British uniforms the yellow Star of David. They are Jewish soldiers who hail from Palestine and will eventually become the fighting A Message from Rabbi Ronald M. Yet, as the war is drawing to a close, these Jewish/ Israeli men "launch a brutal and calculating campaign of vengeance, forming secret squads to identify, locate, and kill Nazi officers in hiding." This book, written by Howard Blum is significant, not only because it tells a story which is unknown to so many people, but it compels us to discuss the efficacy of vengeance. We will read some salient selections to this book and discuss the ramifications of the intent which these men present by creating death squads sent to assassinate the Nazis. In addition, on that night we will watch a portion of a movie entitled: "ECHOES THAT REMAIN" which was made by the Simon Wiesenthal Center and narrated by Martin Landau. This fillm is a poignant study of Jewish Shtetl life before the Holocaust. It combines hundreds of rare archival photos and previously unseen film footage of Jewish communities in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. This film illustrates that which was destroyed by the Nazis, and compels us like the meaning of Tisha B'Av, to lament the loss of a glorious past. A Message from Rabbi Noah ChertkoffThis past month I had the wonderful opportunity to participate at the Hindu Center in an interfaith discussion on interfaith dialogue. It was a fantastic evening. In my role as a representative of the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis on the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, I have had the opportunity to help develop Jewish resources for a

program call “Seasons of Civility”.

I have always found it remarkable how in every religious tradition there is an equivalent of the ‘Golden Rule’. In Judaism it was phrased by Hillel when he taught, "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn." (Talmud, Shabbat 31a) In Christianity it was stated by Jesus, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (Luke 6:31). In Islam it was said by Muhammad and written in the Haddith Literature, “A Bedouin came to the prophet, grabbed the stirrup of his camel and said: O the messenger of God! Teach me something to go to heaven with it. Prophet said: “As you would have people do to you, do to them; and what you dislike to be done to you, don't do to them. Now let the stirrup go! [This maxim is enough for you; go and act in accordance with it!] (Kitab al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 146) In Eastern thought it was said by the Buddhists, “Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.” (Udanavarga 5:18) and in Hinduism, “If the entire “Dharma” (spiritual and moral laws) can be said in a few words, then it is - that which is unfavorable to us, do not do that to others. (Padmapuraana, shrushti 19/357-358)

It is an important reminder to people of faith, that the greatest fulfillment of our faith traditions is not necessarily in the pursuit of the divine as some sort of external force upon the earth, but rather, in the pursuit of the divine in each and every human being on this earth and then treating that divinity with care and respect. We are unique beings, each of us, and to fully embrace our faith traditions we must celebrate that uniqueness. After all in one of my favorite passages from our Jewish tradition we learn, “Humanity was produced from one person, Adam, to show God's greatness. When a man mints a coin in a press, each coin is identical. But when the King of Kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, creates people in the form of Adam not one is similar to any other." (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5)

As we move into the summer and attend the many cultural Summerfest experiences here in Milwaukee, take a moment and marvel at the beauty and wonder of the multiplicity of God’s creations. Enjoy the summer! A

Opportunities to Remember Loved Ones

“We give thanks for the blessing of life, of companionship, and of memory. Though our loved one is beyond our sight, we do not despair, for we sense our beloved in our hearts as a living presence.”

Yahrzeit Reminders

An inspiring and meaningful practice in Judaism is to commemorate the anniversary of the death of a loved one. Congregation Shalom can assist you as you honor the memory of husbands and wives, parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and children.

First, we are able to remind you of your loved one’s Yahrzeit. If you are not currently receiving notice of a Yahrzeit, please contact Pauline at 414-352-9288 or at [email protected]. A number of weeks prior to the Yahrzeit, we will send you a reminder letter. The letter will indicate the Yahrzeit date and the date of the Shabbat Service at which your loved one’s name will be read. The reminder letter will also indicate when to light a memorial candle. As the candle burns for 24 hours, we are reminded of the beauty, warmth and soul of our dearly beloved who is no longer with us.

Once you have advised us of a Yahrzeit, that person’s name is incorporated into our prayer services. Every day, the names of those who have passed away are read at the daily minyan. Each week, at Shabbat Services, the Rabbi names those who have passed away.

Each month, the names of loved ones who have passed away are listed in the Shofar.

Book of Remembrance

The age-old custom of remembering the souls of the departed and contributing to charity in their memory is embedded in the fundamental Jewish belief that the soul is everlasting. Each year prior to the High Holy Days, we publish The Book of Remembrance. The Book of Remembrance is distributed for the Memorial Service that follows Yom Kippur. In addition, Yizkor services (memorial services) are held three other times throughout the year on the last day of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. In the prayers of Yizkor, we ask God to remember the souls of our loved ones who have passed away. Yizkor is an opportunity to re-establish connections that once existed between ourselves and loved ones. The Book of Remembrance Form is included in this issue of the Shofar or can be obtained by calling the office.

Yahrzeit Plaques

Another way to remember a loved one is to purchase a Yahrzeit memorial plaque. Yahrzeit plaques contain the name of your loved one, the date of birth and date of death. Yahrzeit plaques are available for purchase by contacting Pauline at 414-352-9288 or [email protected]. The cost of a plaque is $540.

These plaques are displayed in the Chapel, throughout the year. During the week of your loved one’s Yarhzeit,

the plaque is moved to Samson Sanctuary where the name of your loved one is displayed on the back wall of the Sanctuary. Your loved one is honored and remembered by all who worship in the sanctuary that week.

May the memory of those who are gone always be for a blessing.

What’s Nu?BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

As in years past, we shall have a Book of Remembrance for the Memorial Service on Yom Kippur, listing the names of our departed loved ones. This booklet is also used throughout the year at other Memorial Services. According to Judaic tradition, “repentance, prayer and charity (Teshuvah, Tefilah, and Tzedakah) temper judgments severe decree.” Through these mitzvot, Jews seek to re-establish their relationship with God and with other human beings and accomplish reconciliation with both. Therefore it is appropriate to give to charity before the High Holy Days to improve the spiritual and/or the material well-being of the community.

One way in which we may contribute to charity is by inscribing the name of your departed loved ones in Shalom’s Memorial Book. Contributions are voluntary and the amount is left to your discretion.

In order to insure that all names submitted are correct and included in the booklet, it is necessary to begin the processing no later than August 10th. No names will be read from the pulpit at the Memorial Service. Names received after August 10th will not be included in the booklet. You can avoid disappointment by submitting the form below, no later than August 10th.

Please include the names of the following in the Yom Kippur Book of Remembrance.

Daily MinyanThe number of people who have been coming to minyan has diminished. The daily minyan is a daily service which meets in Kesselman Chapel Monday–Thursday from 5:45–6:00 p.m. We are proud that Congregation Shalom has convened a successful minyan for nearly 15 years. Please attend the minyan on a regular basis as we would love to be with you, and you would assist in perpetuating this meaningful and important service.

Keep Up to DateWe are using email regularly to communicate with members. Our weekly email blasts keep you up to date on all the latest news from Shalom. In addition to the weekly blast, we also share news about deaths, births, temple closings, and other important information. No need to wait to receive the monthly Shofar to be in the know. If you are not currently receiving our weekly emails, please provide your email address to Monica by phone at 352-9288, by email at [email protected], or by mail at: Congregation Shalom 7630 N Santa Monica Blvd. Fox Point, WI 53217 Attn: Monica.
