Dear Rev. Fathers, Sisters, Brothers and lay faithful,
Greetings of peace in the name of Jesus who is theresurrection and the life (Jn 11:25)!
During the month of November we fondlyremember our deceased brethren who have gone beforeus to their heavenly aboard. The celebration of “All SoulsDay”, our visit to the cemeteries of our beloved parents,siblings and friends on 2nd November or any day of thismonth affirm once again the bond that exists betweenthem and us, which the death could not break.
In fact, through baptism our beloved departedbrothers and sisters have been united with Jesus whocame down from heaven to do the will of the Father thatevery one who sees the Son and believes in him shouldhave eternal life, and he will raise him up at the last day(Jn 6:40). At the Eucharistic table during their life time theyate of the living bread – the flesh of Jesus –that came downfrom heaven, and that assured the life for ever (see Jn 6:51).In death, though physically separated from us, thedeparted brethren by their union with Jesus, affirm thehope of Christian life that every one is called for a life thatendures for ever beyond death.
If our celebration and remembrance of ourdeceased brethren offers us chance to mourn for them andpray for them, it also provides an opportunity to think ofour own life. “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we
eagerly wait a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
who, by the power that enables him to bring everything
under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that
they will be like his glorious body” (Phil 3:20-21).
Our life on earth is only a step-stone for the eternal
life. Thus the present life with its joys and sorrows,
success and failures, opportunities and challenges, must
always be oriented towards the fact that the final
accomplishment does not consist in one’s possession of
wealth, material comforts or worldly passing pleasures,
but in the life one achieves after death. The life on earth is
real and must fully be lived with happiness and
contentment, as this life contains already in itself an
element of eternity. The eternity which is imped in the
present life must be properly made matured to reach its
height at our death.
Let the prayers, penances, charitable acts, plenary
indulgences and other pious activities we engage may
bring solace to the departed souls in the purgatory. May
the Lord grant them eternal rest; and the perpetual light

Circular Letter to all the Members of the CCBI
Your Eminence/Grace/Excellency/Monsignor,
In the first place, I would like to wish each one of you the
Peace and the Joy of the Risen Lord.
As the President of a Member Conference of the International
Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL), I had received, in the
last month of May, a communication from His Eminence Robert Cardinal
Sarah, the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the
Discipline of the Sacraments, to the effect that the Trinitarian conclusion
of the Collect Prayers, as it is being used in the English liturgy, should
be modified, by deleting the word ‘One’ from the expression “One
God, for ever and ever.” This communication had already been
forwarded to you by our CCBI Secretariat, vide letter No. DS/435/
2020, dated 20th May, 2020; a copy of the same is being now attached
herewith, for your ready reference.
While explaining that the original Latin Deus per omnia saecula
saeculorum cannot be translated as “One God, for ever and ever,”
and also giving theological reasons why the presence of the word
‘One’ corrupts the lex orandi and therefore the lex credendi, the Prefect
stated: “we rule that it should no longer be used in the translation of
these texts into English.” In the light of this clear directive, we determine
hereby that henceforth the word ‘One’ should be dropped from the
expression “One God, for ever and ever,” whenever we use, in our
country, the Trinitarian conclusion in the Collects, both in the Roman
Missal and in the Liturgy of the Hours, in English. Each Diocesan
Bishop would be expected to convey this instruction to all concerned,
particularly the Clergy and the Religious (Men and Women) in his
Diocese. Steps have also been taken to see that the word ‘One’
before “God, for ever and ever” is dropped in the forthcoming Chapel
Edition of the Roman Missal in English.
In keeping with the guideline given by His Eminence, we are
in touch with the other Member Conferences of the ICEL, through the
Chairman of our Liturgy Commission, Most Rev. Peter Paul Saldanha,
in view of working out an appropriate English translation of the
Trinitarian conclusion of the Collect prayers. As this process awaits
its completion, we would like to advise that, in the meantime, care
should be taken that such conclusions of the Collect prayers in any
vernacular translations of the Missal or of the Liturgy of the Hours that
may be under preparation or in the process of being printed in our
country, do not include the word ‘One.’
As you go about preparing your own vernacular translations,
you may perhaps like to consider the suggestions made by Cardinal
Sarah in his letter about drawing inspiration from the various models
presented therein (v.g. the French, the German, the Italian, the Spanish
and the Portuguese translations). With or without the help of these,
you will decide on how best you can render the “Deus, per omnia
saecula saeculorum” in your vernacular translations, without inserting
the equivalent of ‘one’ which is found in the Collect prayers of the
present English Missal.

“wounded” hands of Jesus, the only Son of the Father, Who “wantedto take the wounds with Him so that they could be seen by the Fatherand intercede for us”.Our hope is in heavenChristians, with their identity cards, and safe in the hands of God, “aremen and women of hope”, the Pope continued. This third word canbe found in the readings for the day, which share the “final visionwhere everything is re-made, where everything is re-created, thathomeland where we will all go”. Using the analogy of an anchor, PopeFrancis said “our hope is in heaven, our hope is anchored there, andwe, with the rope in our hand, support ourselves by looking at thebank of the river we have to cross”.Even if we can’t see the other side, we must cling to the rope, hesaid: “This is important, clinging to the rope!” Often, he concluded,“we will only see the rope, not even the anchor, or the other shore…but clinging to the rope, you will arrive safely” on the other side.June 11, 2020

DALIT LIBERATION SUNDAYThe Dalit Liberation Sunday is observed every year since 2007by CBCI in collaboration of the Reformative churches (NationalCouncil of Churches in India – NCCI). From 2007 with theapproval of the CBCI Standing Committee, we commemorate iton the second Sunday of November.
