NEWNESS: People can become fearful of the unknown, of change and of new things, because we feel more secure if we have everything under our control. These fears can also impact with our relationship and journey with God. Often people are willing to follow and accept God, but only up to a certain point. It can be hard to let go of our own desires and even harder to allow the Holy Spirit to be the guide for every moment of our lives. If you are anything like me, then you might at times be afraid that God may force us to go down a new path and leave behind our previous ways in order to become open to God’s new way. Life however should not be a search for the latest novelty, fad or gadget nor should it be the search for something new to simply change the routines of life. The newness which God brings is something that actually brings fulfilment and gives true joy.

Reflection by Fr James McCarthy onNewness, Harmony and Mission

In light of the famous events described from the Acts of the Apostles of thecoming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, I reflect today on three words linkedto the working of the Holy Spirit: newness, harmony and mission.NEWNESS:People can become fearful of the unknown, of changeand of new things, because we feel more secure if wehave everything under our control. These fears can alsoimpact with our relationship and journey with God.Often people are willing to follow and accept God, butonly up to a certain point. Are we open to God’s surprises? Or Are we closed and fearful before thenewness of the Holy Spirit?MISSION:The Holy Spirit is the soul of mission. The events that took place inJerusalem two thousand years ago are not something far removed from us;they are events which can impact us and become an experience in each ofus today. The Upper Room in Jerusalem at Pentecost is the beginning of theChurch, a beginning which continues forever. The Holy Spirit is the perfectand highest gift of Jesus to the apostles, yet this gift is for everyone of alltimes and all backgrounds. This gift gives us the ability and the courage totake to the streets of the world to tell the Good News about Jesus Christ andto proclaim that Jesus is Risen! The Holy Spirit makes us look to themargins, to the outskirts of existence and to proclaim a new life in theperson of Jesus. Let us ask: Do we tend to stay closed in on ourselves andown little groups, or Do we let the Holy Spirit open us to the mission of Godto the entire world?HARMONY:The Holy Spirit brings a diversity of charisms and talents. It is sometimessuggested that the Holy Spirit can bring disorder, yet through all thediversity of languages and cultures, skills and abilities, the Holy Spirit is thegreat source of unity that recognises that no one person has everything buttogether we form the presence of the Body of Christ. In the Church, it is the Holy Spirit who creates and sustains harmony, a bitlike the conductor of an orchestra. When an orchestra plays, there are manyparts, which if played by themselves they sound weird – especially thepercussion parts, but when played together they form a beautiful harmony.Only the Spirit can awaken diversity while at the same time building unity.By our own efforts, humans can try to create diversity and often the resultis division. When we try to build unity using political or individual means,we end up creating uniformity and then people unfortunately become afraidto be unique or different to the mob. The Holy Spirit however helps us toexperience variety and freedom within the context of the loving communityof God. Let us ask ourselves:Are we open to being a part of the diverse and unified harmony of the HolySpirit?Today, as we celebrate the birth of the Church, in union with Mary we cryout:Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fireof your love. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
