VOL. LIX NO. 1 JANUARY 2019 CHRIST HALL KOZHIKODE From the Provincial HAPPY NEW YEAR; ONE COLLECTIVE RESOLUTION? New Year is a time for dreaming. For centuries men, women and children have made New Year resolutions with a dream for a better world for oneself and others. There are skeptics who scorn the idea of making resolutions and breaking them the very next day, if not on the same day. There are plenty of statistics too to prove that not more than ten percent do stick to the resolutions. However, we humans continue to make them. Why do we, then, make resolutions? It definitely is part of a vision-driven living. It is only when you have a long term vision for your personal and communitarian life that you want to make resolutions and strive to live up to them. ‘New Year’s resolutions are, as one author wrote, a triumph of hope over experience. They’re a way to quantify what we wish for ourselves. They are a means to cataloguing our personal dissatisfactions. And, perhaps most importantly, they are a method of erasing errors of the past year… Yes, New Year’s resolutions are all about hopefulness.’ Here is a suggestion: Can we for a change make a resolution for the community/ whole Province? A collective resolution? If you feel like it send it to me. We could collate them and pass around! May the New Year be a year of blessings! HAPPY NEW YEAR; ONE COLLECTIVE RESOLUTION?

And, perhaps most importantly, they are a method of erasing errors of the past year… Yes, New Year’s resolutions are all about hopefulness.’

Here is a suggestion: Can we for a change make a resolution for the community/ whole Province? A collective resolution? If you feel like it send it to me. We could collate them and pass around!

May the New Year be a year of blessings!

SNEHABHAVAN, KOTTAYAM

Due to the floods, the roads to the Vocational Training Centre at Aymanam were damaged. So we had to transfer the equipments of vocational training to Gandhinagar. The Kerala Jesuit Society, through Santhinilayam, provided immediate flood relief for ten of our affected students and 22 families in the Community Based Rehabilitation ( CBR) areas of Manarkadu and Karapuzha. We have submitted 14 more applications, mainly for repair of houses and one for construction of a new house in place of a totally damaged one.

All the teachers attended a three-day refresher programme on evaluation of students according to the new curriculum provided by the State Government. This gave them more confidence in assessing the progress of each student supporting them and their parents in sustaining their progress. We have started a Mental health Clinic for our students who show mental health problems at Santhinilayam. The Clinic is in collaboration with the Mental Health Action Trust (Mhat), Kozhikode, and functions every Saturday afternoon. We celebrated the 100th birthday of Fr Joseph Kannampuzha.
