VOL. LX NO. 1 JANUARY 2020 CHRIST HALL KOZHIKODE FROM THE PROVINCIAL Dear Friends in the Lord, I wish all readers of Kerala Tidings a peaceful New Year as we step into 2020. I find it significant that the Church observes January 1st every year as World Day of Peace (although the UN has it on September 21). Living amidst forces of increasing conflict and hatred, it would ask us to seek new ways of living in peace and harmony. A critical term in the ongoing political discourse is ‘citizenship’. The notion got transplanted from the city-states of ancient Greece to the nation-states of today, with new embellishments. Elitism has been the hallmark of citizenship from its origins with clever norms of inclusion and exclusion. We see new norms getting devised every day. The Christian idea of citizenship rooted in the ‘Reign of God’ transcends cities and kingdoms and nations-states. It transcends boundaries that are human made and overlooks skin colour and dress colour. It echoes the heaven of freedom that Tagore sang about. Many have dreamt of such a world and continue to do so. Pope Francis’ 2020 World Day of Peace Message has as its title “Peace as a journey of hope: dialogue, reconciliation and ecological conversion.” He urges us to break the spiral of vengeance and set out on the journey of hope. Let 2020 be a year of journey in hope for all. E.P. FROM THE PROVINCIAL

Dear Friends in the Lord,

I wish all readers of Kerala Tidings a peaceful New Year as we step into 2020. Fr Sunny Jacob, the national JEA secretary, together with Fr Tomson, our JEA coordinator, made a surprise visit to the junior school on Dec12th. He enlightened our staff on the nuances and implications of the New Educational Policy of the central govt. The STD IX students of the Junior school had a seminar on emotional maturity conducted by Mr Christy Joseph, an NLP trainer. He motivated them to turn their obstacles to opportunities and their problems into possibilities. The Junior school staff had their Christmas celebration on 19th December and the students were able to have the bonhomie of Christmas on the 20th. The parish priest Fr Vincent Pulickal exhorted them to live a life of peace, joy and happiness and have the attitude of Jesus in what they think and do. Both the celebrations sent echoes and vibrations of love, concern and solidarity among the entire staff and students. The 2nd All Kerala Invitation Inter School Football Tournament in honour of Fr John Mialil will be conducted from 14th to 17th January in the Junior school grounds.

Joseph EdasseryLOYOLA, ALUVAThe first year novices successfully completed the month-long Spiritual Sadhana on 12th Dec. The second year novices who were away for Work Experiment, rejoined the community on the same day. They were given a ‘heroic’ welcome by the rest of the Community. The first year novices remained in silence & recollection for the next three days, revisiting the Spiritual Sadhana. After that, the second year novices shared their experiences with the rest of the Community. On 17th Fr Sheise Thomas gave us a theatre workshop which continued intermittently till the end of the month. Our Christmas Holidays began on 20th Dec and we joyfully plunged into preparations to celebrate Christmas. The Crib, Christmas tree, star (made of bamboo), etc., were set before the Christmas Eve. On 23rd, the novices, accompanied by Fr Rachans, conducted Carol Service in our neighbourhood. We visited all the houses, not only the Christian one, and also the religious houses nearby. On Christmas night, the second years went to their ministry-places and the first years to our local parish. We had special community Mass presided over by Fr Jacob on Christmas day. Fr Manesh Jerald and our Kunjumon Chettan’s family were our guests of honor for Christmas. SANTHINILAYAM, KOTTAYAMOn the recommendations of Fr Pious Vacha, we gave accommodation, in several beaches, to over 500 young men from a military entrance coaching center in Trivandrum. They were here to take part in the recruitment to the army, held in MG University campus. The young men gave us some sleepless nights but it was instructive to watch every one of their offences being punished by their instructors in no-nonsense military fashion. On the Sunday before Christmas, the usual Hindi Mass for the inter-state workers was followed by a Christmas celebration with tribal dances. Sunny rose to the occasion by giving a Modi-type speech in pucca Hindi. The setting for our Crib was a mini Israeli kibbutz complete with terraced wheat fields, the creation of Jithin and Emmanuel. Sunny passed in First Division the MSc Counselling and Family Therapy course of IGNOU, securing 73.5 % marks. Pulickal made his annual retreat in Pius X, Edathua, along with TM Joseph. Both of them recommend the place for private retreats. The quiet and the green around and the canals criss-crossing the landscape - and the goodness of the community and the cook - will work on you for the better, even if God doesn't turn up!

LOYOLA, SREEKARIYAMMrs Jancy James, former Vice Chancellor of M.G. University as well as the Central University, was the chief guest at the solemn Christmas celebration at

Frs Sunny Kunnappallil and Sabu Palathanadil attended the JHEASA meeting at Kolkata. Such meetings also showcased how the alumni can chip in with precious resources. Fr Sabu attended the Xavier Board meet at Guwahati and was also invited as a subject expert at the SCERT workshop in Thiruvananthapuram.

Loyola School had the Term Exams as well as the Annual Excursions. Seven classes - Std VI to XII - completed their annual tours to places as far as Hampi in Karnataka and Yercaud in Tamil Nadu alongside visits to Bengaluru, Mysore, Kannur & Kasaragod districts, the Mango Meadow near Kaduthuruthy, and a ride in the open sea in Kochi - all in a span of five days. The junior classes had their annual outings to nearby places in and around the city. The School received the third prize in the English Language Teachers’ Association of India (ELTAI) National Word Championship. Fifteen of our students represented the State/Region in the national levels in five events at the SGFI Meets.

The Teachers’ Day as well as Children’s Day brought out the mutual affection as manifest in the various entertainments staged. Dr John Panikkar, the renowned ENT surgeon, delivered the Christmas message dwelling upon the need to handle noise pollution.

Fr Jose Kadankavil, taking care of his flocks in Cheruvaikal, has initiated an elegant newsletter. Soon after Christmas he and the parishioners are away on their customary pilgrimage to Velankanni seeking blessings from their heavenly patroness.

AADI, ATTAPPADIAADI Kalakendram, dormitory and residence and the land surrounding them are now well protected from elephants and cows with electric fence. Thanks to Fr Provincial for supporting us with the necessary finance, and Fr Binu Michael who executed the complicated fencing in the uneven ground bordering the forest. He also has made the AADI property and eco-reserve much attractive for trekking and nature walk with four eco- zones cleared with name boards for each zone and names displayed for many trees in the campus, and trailing along the boundary. Visitors especially the students can have a good exposure to the hilly greenery. PIUS X JESUIT HOUSE, EDATHUADn Sharath was with us for a period of four months helping in the ITI and going for ministry in Changaskary parish. After a fruitful time in both the places, he was given a warm send off. The community is grateful to him for his presence and services. Fr K P Mathew went to Gujarat to be with his brother Fr K P Vincent for ten days, and he came back rejuvenated. Fr Jose Mathew attended the JesuiTech meeting held at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar. JesuiTech is the parent body of all the 29 ITIs in the Assistancy. The POSA alerted us saying it was high time for we move to the next stage in the running of ITIs in the Assistancy. It was a well organized meeting and it came out with clear policies for the next stage

in the running of our ITIs. Our Alumni, in collaboration with the Jubilee Hospital, Edathua, organized a blood grouping camp for the public. The senior citizens forum in collaboration with the ITI organized a mega eye-testing camp for the public. Fr Joe Pulickal and Fr T M Joseph made their annual retreat here. They were enamored by the scenic beauty of Kuttanadu.
