Your Kingdom Come
Have you ever found yourself excitedly waiting
for something to happen? Maybe it’s a fun trip that
you have planned, or a holiday, or a birthday? What-
ever it is, the days can’t seem to go by fast enough as
your anticipation just rises and falls with each day.
Why can’t it come yet? When will it be here? Those
times of waiting definitely aren’t always the most
enjoyable, but in many cases the wait ends up being
so worth it.
This week, we continue in our sermon series on
The Lord’s Prayer, and we come to the Second
Petition where we pray, “Your Kingdom Come.” Now,
I don’t know if you’ve thought much about God’s
Kingdom. That word “kingdom” probably isn’t one
that we spend too much time using or thinking about
as the idea of a kingdom might sound more archaic
than modern to most. But this kingdom that we are
talking about is this kingdom of grace that is alive in
the hearts and lives of those who follow Jesus, and it
is the physical place where those who are saved will
live and be forever with God in heaven.
So, when we pray for His Kingdom to come,
what are we praying for? God’s coming Kingdom
doesn’t need or depend on our prayers for it to come,
it is coming regardless of that. Rather, when we pray
this petition, we are praying that God’s Kingdom
would not only come, but that it would come to us.

We are praying that we would be filled
with His grace and be received as a member of
this Kingdom. We pray that God’s Kingdom
would come to others as well, our friends, family
members, and people throughout the world. We
are also praying for it to come quickly; that
Jesus’ return would come soon so that all things
would be made right and good and perfect.
As we live as people living in a fallen world,
this petition should carry with it both an
appreciation and an urgency. We are longing for
God’s Kingdom to come because it is our true
home. We also live in thanksgiving for the
opportunity we have to enter His Kingdom by
His grace and mercy to us. And we also live as
representatives of this Kingdom that helps point
others to our loving Heavenly Father whose
invitation extends to everyone. Our Father in
heaven, hallowed be Your name. May Your
Kingdom come (to us and to the world)! Amen!
