Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

The Copyright Directive, the question of parallel imports, the legal framework for e -commerce, the future of digitalradio, schemes to develop independent labels, theAOL/Time Warner and the Warner Music/EMI mergers-all these different issues have one thing in common. Theyall start or end in Brussels.

Slowly, Europeans are waking up to the notion thatEurope is being ruled by policy -makers in Brussels whoappear more and more to be the transatlantic equiva-lent of the US's federal government in Washington DC.Europe is not (yet?) a federal entity, but the number ofissues that are now discussed not at a local level but ata pan-European level in Brussels are growing.

However, being a lobbyist in Brussels is not aneasy gig. Getting to learn how Brussels functions andcatching the attention of policy -makers is a hard task,as the European radio industry unpleasantly discov-ered last year at the NAB Europe conference in Brus-sels, when the Commissioner in charge of media

issues failed to show. What currently characterises the bureaucratic and

political set up in Brussels is its complexity and its totalabsence of clarity. Often, there seems to be no set rules,so one has to find a way through various departmentsand the several layers of power, such as the Commis-sion, the Council of Ministers, the permanent represen-tatives committee and the European parliament.

Take this week's episode in the Copyright Directivesaga (see story, front page), where an important deci-sion was taken which opens the door to a final adop-tion of the text by the end of the year. Yet it was nottaken by the Commission or the Parliament, but byan intermediary "representatives committee" which ispre-digesting the agenda for aforthcoming Council of Ministerswhich will then adopt the textwithout a debate...

At present, too much action istaking place in smoke -filled roomsbehind the scenes, with too manyintermediaries involved. The EU'smodus operandi needs to be sim-plified, more open and a bit moredemocratic.

'Confront US invasion'says SGAE initl directorby Howell Llewellyn

MADRID - The Spanish authors' andpublishers' society SGAE has repeat-ed its call for a French -style 40% min-imum quota on radio for nationalmusic repertoire at the first Spanish -French music forum, MusicactualUno. Held in Madrid on June 2, it wasorganised by music industry figuresfrom both countries.

Francisco Aguilera, SGAE direc-tor of international relations, asserted at the forum that "Span-ish artists and authors [as well asFrench] need a safety cushion intheir own market. As Europeans, the Spanish and French must con-front the US invasion and theunwillingness of that country toopen its frontiers to our product."

Jean -Francois Michel, whoholds positions as director of theFrench Music Export Office, direc-tor general of the European MusicOffice and president of the FrenchMusic Office in New York, addedthat "traditionally, France hasbeen very bad at exporting itsmusic, but this tendency has beencorrected over the past five or sixyears. Artists such as the GypsyKings and Manu Chao demon-strate that the frontiers betweenFrance and Spain are an obsoleteconcept."

The forum, which is planned tobe an annual event alternatingbetween Madrid and Paris, wascalled to analyse music industry

relations between the two Euro-pean neighbours who share a sig-nificant common border. The coop-eration follows "years of relativemutual incomprehension," accord-ing to SGAE executive presidentEduardo Bautista, who added thatFrance was, after Argentina andthe US, the country where SGAEreceived most rights.

Brigitte Veyne, herself a Frenchnational and head of SGAE'spatronage department, said "werealised that despite sharing acommon border, Spain and Franceare ignorant of each other's musicprofessionals and didn't know thatjust the other side of the borderthere are things that could be ofmutual interest.forum is to inform them of what'sgoing on and put them in contactwith each other."

Veyne added that "France ismore protective of its music culturewithin its own borders, but doesn'tdo the same abroad. Spain is moreopen to outside influence, but for-gets to promote its artists outsideits natural linguistic sphere, whichis mainly Latin America."

The one -day forum included tworound -table discussions with, among others, BMG Ariola Spainpresident Jose Maria Camara,EMI Music Publishing Spain direc-tor general Fabrice Benoit,Bernard Batzen, director ofAzimuth Productions and ThomasLorain of Sony France.

European parliament debatesdigital's 'crisis of confidence'by Keith Nuthall

BRUSSELS - Europe'sstalled transition towardsdigital radio is causing a cri-sis of confidence in the sec-tor, with some trailblazingbroadcasters consideringabandoning the new tech-nology, a senior broadcastingindustry figure has claimed.

David Wood, head of newtechnology at the WorldDAB Forum, told the Euro-pean Parliament's culturecommittee on May 24: "Tenyears after DAB was devel-oped in Europe, digital radioreceivers are still not avail-able or plentiful in theshops; digital radio broad-casts are available-butonly in modest numbers.

"And some broadcastersin Europe," warns Wood,"are running out of thecash, and the will, neededto continue broadcastingdigital radio, [because]there are no receiversaround to receive it. Inspite of the technical excel-lence of the DAB system,we are near a crisis."

At a special hearingorganised by the European

Parliament's culture commi-tee, BBC Radio directorJenny Abramsky called onthe institutions of the Euro-pean Union to give a clearpolicy lead and financialsupport for digital radiobroadcasting. Abramskysaid: "A substantial concert-ed effort is now requiredfrom all stakeholders-broadcasters, manufactur-ers and legislators-to carrythe transition forward. Thesituation is not helped bythe lack of a public policy

lead from Europe."We urge the European

Institutions to recognisethe unique character andimportance of radio inEurope, to support radio'sdigital transition and toassert through its audio-visual programmes andstrategies that radio willbe, in its own right, a key

industry in the informa-tion society," Abramskyconcluded.

  • Creating Vienna's better music mixVienna AC station AntenneWien saw its initial audi-ence ratings plummet aftera high -profile launch twoyears ago. In the spring of1998, the UK's GWR Groupwere brought in as newshareholders to bring addi-tional know-how from amore mature commercialradio market. Susan L.Schuhmayer reports on theprogress to date.

    STATIONIN FOCUS

Antenne Wien's best audi-ence figures to date wereachieved in the very firstquarter it went on the airin April 1998, scoring a 7%

marketshare. But by the end of theyear it had tumbled to just a 2% shareof the Vienna audience.

"It was an amazingly high -profilelaunch," reflects Antenne Wien man-aging director Peter Don. "There wasa great marketing strategy.Unfortunately, I don't think it had avery good music policy. The stationdidn't really find an audience andcater to it." Don, an Australian, wasnamed general manager of the ACstation following the GWR Group'sinvestment in March 1999. Fellowcountryman Ian Walker was chosenas programming director.

Rather than starting completelyfrom scratch, however, the Aussie duodecided to retain the name AntenneWien because brand awareness, atleast, was high. "Our task was to refo-cus this brand and find a place to putit into the market," says Don.

Female -friendlyThe first step was to define a moreprecise target audience, which-itwas decided-would be women aged20 to 40. This was an important stepin a one year -old Austrian commercialradio market which had been repeat-edly criticised for offering stationsthat all sounded alike, with virtuallyall the new commercial operators(perhaps inevitably) trying to claimthe lucrative CHR and AC centre -ground for themselves.

During the past year, the Viennamarket has gradually witnessed agreater differentiation of formats.NRJ-backed Radio Energy has carvedout a niche for itself as the station foryoung listeners between the ages of

10 and 29 who are more open to alter-native rock and dance. The AC/Goldstation 88.6 (the most successful of allVienna's new commercial stations)caters to a slightly older crowd, whileCLT-UFA's 92.9 RTL has developed arock focus after a number of musicformat changes.

All the newcomers are doing theirupmost to put a dent in the domi-nance of ORF's 03, the state-ownedCHR station that remains the coun-try's only national pop music outlet. In the fourth quarter of 1999, 03retained a 33% market share in theVienna market. 88.6, the top -ratedcommercial station, held a 12% share, while Antenne Wien took a 4% share, according to market research insti-tute Fessel Gfk.

Don admits that progress has beenslow going, and that Antenne Wien'sshareholders, which include StyriaMedien (publishers of the newspaperDie Presse), Constantia Privatbank andMedien 2000, a joint venture betweenGWR and Antenne Wien's originalinvestors, Austria's News Group, can beimpatient to see positive results.

Panel gamesOne of the keys to turning round thestation, according to Don, is a better -defined music policy: "We recognisethe need to be quite focused and veryconsistent." Antenne Wien's AC for-mat promises listeners the best mix ofthe '80s, '90s and today. In order todeliver this, the station has set up apanel-comprised entirely of womenbetween the ages of 24 and 34-whoevaluate the station's hits and poten-tial hits every two weeks.

Some of the 130 panellists describeAntenne Wien as their favourite sta-

ly on rotation, "although for this typeof format that's probably too many,"Walker admits.

Current and recurrent hits aretested every time panellists meet, while Gold tracks are tested twice ayear. Test results are fed into a com-puter, 'which charts the rise and fall ofeach song's popularity over time.Programming meetings are held afterevery test to decide which songs toadd to the playlist.

Walker says he is open to addingreleases by Austrian artists, and ifhe was offered a new internationalsong and one from an Austrianartist, "my preference at the momentwould be to play the Austrian song. Ireally think there are a lot of talent-ed people here. We need to help thelocal music industry."

He also pays attention to hitsfrom other continental Europeanmarkets, particularly in light of thestation's new Euro Hit countdown, which monitors 15 European coun-tries and then counts down the Top30 songs. The show can now also beheard on several other regional sta-tions in Austria, the result of aninformal network involving eight ofthe country's 10 regional commercialstations, which have begun sharingprogramming and promotional activ-ities. "The commercial sector needsto act in a very co-ordinated way, otherwise it will be a collection ofcompetitors that a strong ORF willbe able to deal with one by one,"explains Don.

`Difficult' relationshipsWorking together also allows recordlabels to co-ordinate the introduc-tion of new music across the eight

tion, while others prefer competitorssuch as 03 or 88.6. This intensive andongoing research "gives me a fairindication of what is going to be suc-cessful. A lot of it is also gut feeling,"says programme director Walker.

The four highest rated hits areaired 40 times a week. The next mostpopular songs are played 36 times perweek.

In the mixAntenne Wien usually plays 13 songsper hour. Six are from mid -1998 totoday, with four of those being currenthits. Three to four songs are from the1980s, the rest from the earlier part ofthe '90s. Some 330 songs are current -

regional stations. In the past, rela-tionships with the labels had been"difficult. But it's getting better,"says Walker. "At first there was a lotof resistance to this station. Itseemed to be the mindset with a lotof [record] companies that ORF arethe kings, and are the people whoneed to have the music first. I thinkthat's just very wrong."

The station has now developed agood relationship with two or threerecord companies, but Walker sayshe has still been struck by thebehaviour of many Austrian labels. In Australia, he recalls, record com-pany representatives visited himregularly to introduce new artists

and new music. Here, he justreceives product sent by post. Headds that if label representativesvisited in person to introduce theirproduct, they'd have a much betterchance of piquing his interest.

As Australians operating in anAustrian market, Walker said the keybenefit "is the knowledge we havegained in other markets, and passing iton to our talent and staff. A lot of whatwe are doing now has been done verysuccessfully in other major markets."

Don points out that Austrian com-mercial stations now reach morethan a million listeners per day, andthree to four million listeners perweek in a country of eight million."The significant amount of listenersto commercial radio really is notrecognised," he laments.

Building awarenessTo change this, Antenne Wien is try-ing to boost its own presence throughregular advertising in newspapers

and magazines in which its share-holders are involved. It's a much qui-eter campaign than when AntenneWien was launched two years ago, when billboards and posters wereplastered all over the city. Many peo-ple criticised the station at the timefor running too aggressive an adver-tising campaign.

Antenne Wien has also begunadvertising on the new commercialAustrian television station ATV, onGerman commercial TV stationswhich have special time set aside forAustrian advertisers, in movie the-atres and on billboards en route to thecity from Vienna's airport.

With its healthy economy, highadvertising levels and sophisticated, wealthy population base, Austria has"the perfect ingredients for commer-cial radio," Don predicts. "But it's adifficult challenge because it is new,and obviously we still have quite along way to go."

  • EURO 2000 SPOTLIGHT

Music and football: aFrom the chants of the crowd,to the marching band, to theoperatic diva singing thenational anthems; footballhas always had a musicalassociation. Euro 2000provides an internationalstage and a massivemarketing opportunity forthe music industry. PaulSexton takes a look atwho will be providing thesoundtrack to the eventand talks to the peopleresponsible for the officialalbum.

f the hopes of music businessmoguls are realised, by the time thefinal of Euro 2000 takes place inRotterdam on July 2, the sounds ofthe soccer-fest will be every bit as

vivid as the footballing images them-selves. Neither sports fanatics norfootball widows need telling that thetournament kicked off on Saturdayevening (10 June) in Brussels, whenBelgium, joint hosts with Holland, took on Sweden at the King BaudouinStadium.

The rewards for success at Euro2000 will be immense, and that's notjust on the pitch. The event representsnot only a massive pan-European cele-bration of football, but a golden goal inmusic marketing for the record indus-try. Music entrepreneurs in the 16nations to qualify for Europe's biggestsoccer festival have their own plans tomaximise the commercial opportunitiesof Euro 2000, with the close cooperationof radio and all other key media.

In pan-European terms, the task ofcoordinating and executive -producing

the official musicalaccompaniment to theevent fell to RickBlaskey, managingdirector of the Music &Media Partnership(unrelated to this mag-azine, although as along-sufferingSheffield Wednesdaysupporter we extendhim our sympathy).

It was his team'sWednesday band, whosupply the unofficialaccompaniment atEngland internationalmatches, that providedthe impetus for theproject.

Going localOn June 12, UniversalMusic TV will releaseEuro 2000TM The

    tent based on popular supporters'chants.

"People have been calling thisalbum the soundtrack of the tourna-ment'," says Blaskey, who is hoping forworldwide sales of "between one andtwo million." Central to that theme isthe "sonic logo" of the event, Swedishdance star E -Type's Campione 2000,out as a single on June 12-and sure-ly no song can ever have had a moreexhaustive campaign of mass exposurebehind it.

In the promo opportunity of a life-time, E -Type will perform the song atthe opening and closing ceremoniesand at other selected games, with anexcerpt to be played as the teams takethe field for every match and a 15 -sec-ond blast every time a goal is scoredand at the final whistle. Dutch airlineKLM will play the Campione 2000video on all its flights until the tour-nament ends, and even as the victori-ous captain collects the Euro 2000 tro-phy on July 2, the song will be waftingfrom the Feyenoord Stadium's publicaddress system via TV into millions ofhomes.

Matchmaking againThe official album will also include FatLes 2000's England theme Jerusalem, tracks by Paul Van Dyk, Sash! andDario G, and such local favourites asItaly's Elio E Le Storie Tese,Denmark's Hampenberg andPortuguese act Bamboo Beat. Blaskey, matchmaker of many previousmusic/sport marriages including theofficial albums of Euro '96, France '98and the Rugby World Cup, says: "Wesat down with UEFA a year ago andsaid '3 Lions-the Skinner & Baddiel/Lightning Seeds hit of both 1996 and'98-was number one in 21 countries. You can either sit back and let recordcompanies use your logo, or you canmarket the event.' If you watch foot-ball on TV, it's awash with music, either in the stadia or on the broad-casts, and this way you integrate theofficial music into the event."

Sponsors using that music in tie-inpromotions include Mastercard, whoare running a nightly TV contest; DeAftrap ("kickoff") in the Benelux coun-tries June 1-9; McDonalds, in a cam-paign on Belgian and Greek TV andUK radio; Hyundai in Greece; Coca-Cola in markets including Turkey; andPringles all over Europe.

"We've worked really closely withUEFA and the Euro 2000 Foundationto find ways where sponsors and com-mercial partners can have access tothe music and use it to their own ben-efits," concludes Blaskey.

M&M correspondents high-light the musical activities ofthe major footballing nationsto tie in with Euro 2000.

    England

The worlds of comedy, art and musiccollide on the official Englishanthem for Euro 2000. Releasedthrough Parlophone onJune 5, Jerusalem is acover of the William Blakehymn featuring the dubioussinging talents of KeithAllen, Damien Hirst andBlur's Alex James.

Known collectively as FatLes 2000, the group reachednumber two in the UK with their1998 World Cup song Vindaloobut, this time, deputy programmedirector at UK Rock stationVirgin Radio Nik Goodman thinksthey can go one better.

"I think [Jerusalem] will capturethe mood of the nation and be a num-ber one record," Goodman says."But," he concedes, "we're not playingit yet. On days of the England gameswe'll give it a spin but it's not gettingmassive upfront [play]."

The record was officially sanctionedby the Football Association whosechief executive is Adam Crozier. "Wehave chosen Jerusalem with England'sfans in mind because we think it isjust the thing to help them get behindthe team," Crozier reveals.

The only other English song forEuro 2000 with a release date is aversion of The Great Escape (V2) bythe England Supporters Band and N -Trance rapper Ricardo Da Force, outon June 12. Adam Howorth

    Germany

Back in 1997, a series of international-ly acclaimed musicians, includingCanadian Anna Maria Kaufmann andSwedish singer/composer Joey Tempest(ex -Europe) were brought together bythe German football federation (DFB)to create "a permanent musical hand-print for the national team" under thetitle Running With A Dream.

Today there appears to be littleeffort to awaken the team -spirit of asquad which has been drawing publiccriticism for almost a whole year.Public TV channel ZDF is using BonJovi's recent hit single It's My Life asits official theme music for their livecoverage from the championships.

As co -hosts of Euro 2000TM withBelgium, radio in Holland has beenbombarded with one-off singles tying inwith the event. Ben Houdijk, program-mer at public CHR station Radio 3FM,is counting five new titles per week.

"Most of them are B -list artistsjumping on the band wagon," hesays. Best bet for a hit seems to beJohan & De Trommels' Frankie Is DeBaas, a funny song about Hollandmanager Frank Rijkaard, featuringa spoof Johan Cruyff, considered thebest footballer in Holland's history(Dino Music).

The official theme song, as com-missioned by UEFA/Euro 2000, maybe Campione 2000 by E -Type(Stockholm/Polydor), but the localfavourite is Wij Houden Van Oranje("We Love The Orange Dutch Team")by Andre Hazes (EMI).

It has been re-released for everysoccer tournament since 1988 whenHolland won the European Cham-pionships. It is currently the flipsideto Hazes' latest single. "It will surelybecome the A -side as soon as theDutch results prove promising," reck-ons Houdijk.

    Italy

In spite of the country's great love ofsoccer, Italy's musical contribution tothe European championships issomewhat low-key. The official themetune, which will be used for publicbroadcaster RAI's TV and radio cov-erage of the tournament, is a newsong, La Gente Vuole Il Calcio, by thehumorous group Elio & Le StorieTese (BMG).

Meanwhile, broadcaster Telemon-tecarlo has commissioned a 30 -secondsignature tune by Lanfranco Perini. Both pieces make their debut at theopening game on Saturday, June 10.There are no plans for the Elio & LeStorie Tese song to be released as asingle, although it will appear on theofficial Universal compilation album.

Andrea Bocelli's song, Il CantoDella Terra which is being used byUK public broadcaster the BBC, willalso feature on the album. Bocelli willalso perform at the tournament's clos-ing concert in Rotterdam on July 1.

Italy's apparent indifference tosporting theme tunes is explained byGabriella Mancini, the entertain-ment correspondent with the coun-try's leading sports paper, LaGazzetta dello Sport: "There's a feel-ing in Italy that football anthemsbring bad luck and consequentlyartists tend to avoid them."

    Spain

From the land that has more rightthan most to Ole, Ole, Ole comesAgustito by the Madrildio trioKetama. The song, a remix of the orig-inal track from Ketama's 1999 tripleplatinum album jToma Ketama!(Universal) has already hit the topspot in both sales and airplay charts.

    The band themselves are "football

crazy" and are said to be thrilledabout the use of the song. However, itseems unlikely that the flamencopurists, who have been disparagingof the combo's fusion of flamenco withpop, will be as delighted about theappropriation of their music by thefootball fraternity.

As Madrid -based DJ CK1 put it,"It's not got much to do with football, but if Spain go far it could catch on onthe terraces," and seeing as the groupare set to play at the start of all theSpanish matches, this seems like asure thing. Debbi Christophers

LOVE LETTERLast year's big breakout track from the Berlin LoveParade, Rollergirl's Dear Jessie (Universal/Germany),is finally about to get a UK release on Eddie Gordon'sNeo Records. A natural crossover tune with a pop cho-rus plus new mixes from the Sharp Boys and LiquidChild, DJ also comes with a neat, hook -heavy radioedit that has a pleasant retro-Euro feel.

Neo are hoping that the track will be adopted as theunnofficial anthem of the inaugural UK Love Parade,to be held in Leeds on July 8. "Based on the track'sEuropean success, the pop nature of the tune and thequality of the new mixes we're expecting a strong reac-tion from both radio and the clubs," says Neo's promo-tion manager Nikki Wright.

A MUST FOR BRAZIL NUTSNew York -based Caipirinha Music's Caipirissima-Batacuda Electronica is a must for afficionados ofBrazilian music with an electronic twist. Compiled byBeco Dranoff, who also works with Crammed Discs ontheir Ziriguiboom imprint, the album mixes contribu-tions from familiar names like Arto Lindsay, Suba andAmon Tobin with material from less well known artists.Names like DJ Dolores and cYz may be unfamiliar buttheir music, like all quality Brazilian electronica, com-bines the warmth and melody of its roots with swirling, psychedelic arrangements and sprightly hip hop grooves.

APPETIZER IS THE MAIN COURSEOn their first album proper-following last year's remixcollection Additional Production s-Funkstorung'sAppetite For Disctruction (Stud!o K7/Germany) sees acrystalisation of their stark, slightly cranky and highlyindividual sound. By working with the rapper Triple Hand singers Greenwood and Carin the duo display amelodic sensibility that complements and cuts acrosstheir edgy sound. Particularly interesting is the sultry, peppery ballad Red Shirt, White Shoes, with its overlap-ping vocals, fluttering piano and accordion -like synths. As proved on the odd but charming closing tracks ABottle, A Box And A Mic and Mind The Gap this is rad-ical, highly personal hip hop characterised by excruciat-ing attention to detail combined with a jokey warmth.

DAEWOO CHOOSES NEW MUSICFollowing the pan-European success of Lady Violet'sInside To Outside-with chart placings in France,Belgium and Scandinavia plus an imminent release inGermany, the UK and the US-Milan-based NewMusic International now have another track that

    seems set to crossover.Following a domestic Top 20 Neja's

Fairytale is already a number one in theSpanish radio charts and, most significantly, was on high rotation (lista roja) at Los 40Principales. A release in the rest of Europe, through Universal, is scheduled next week

following a recent video shoot in Germany. In a paralleldevelopment, the second track on Neja's EP, calledMum's Day, has been chosen by Daewoo for the adver-tising campaign for the Lanos range. Consequently,Neja appeared on the Daewoo stand at the MadridMotor Show two weeks ago. The track is not currentlyavailable as a single but will most probably be the fol-low-up to Fairytale.

Livin' La Vita Bella!by Mark Dezzani

Italy is not the most obvious place to pro-duce homegrown Latin pop talent, butNek-aka Filippo Neviani from Modena inthe north of the country-is just that. Withthe release of new album La Vita E throughWEA on June 2, Nek is hoping to emulatethe success of his 1997 album Lei Gli AmiciE Tutto Il Resto, which sold 1.7 millioncopies throughout continen-tal Europe and LatinAmerica in the wake ofbreakthrough single LauraNon C'e.

The follow-up, In Due,sold a relatively modest800,000 copies, but WEAItaly MD Massimo Giuliano(who is also VP WarnerMusic Italy) expects LaVita E to match the saleslevels of his 1997 effort."Nek's last album waswriten and recorded inbetween tour dates andrush released. It was morerock oriented and it didn'thave the second or thirdstrong single necessary forconsolidation. This new album, however, returns to the strong melodies of LauraNon C'e and has had an excellent responsefrom our label mates in many territories,"says Giulliani.

The lead single Ci Sei Tu is classic Nek,upbeat and melodic and Pieno D'energiahas a Latin pop charge reminiscent of RickyMartin. "Touring really opened my eyes, especially in Latin America" says Nek. "On

the one hand the Latin people are joyous, sunny people whilst just round the corneryou can encounter tragic circumstances. These impressions inspired the music andlyrics of my new songs," he explains.

Following recent pre-release swingsthrough Germany, Austria, Switzerland andSpain, Nek returns to these territories inforthcoming weeks for press, radio & TV. Hethen covers Latin America in August before

returning to Europe inSeptember for promotion inHolland, Belgium andFrance. A European tourkicks off next October inItaly, before a LatinAmerican leg in January2001. A Spanish version ofhis new album, La Vida Es,is released in Spain, LatinAmerica and the US thisJuly.

"The new album will beinstrumental in his careerdevelopment," says ToniVandoni, responsible forrecord industry contactsat national music networkRadio Italia Solo MusicaItaliana. "It is full of good

songs which I believe have a strong inter-national appeal and proves that he is notjust the blue eyed boy of Italian pop."Warner Music Italy president GerolamoCaccia Dominioni agrees: "Nek is a projectwithout frontiers. He has a strong fanbase in Europe and the Americas to workfrom. He is a good artist who works veryhard, and these are the ingredients for asuccess story."

St Germain and all that jazzby Millane Kang

Since its release on April 18, St Germain'sTourist has quickly notched up 100,000sales in Europe, with half of these comingdomestically in France. The electronic jazzartist's long awaited debut album on BlueNote/EMI is the follow-up to the classic 1995release Boulevard (F Communications)which itself shifted 200,000units and was nominated atthe Dance Music Awards inLondon.

St Germain, aka LudovicNavarre, was a forerunner ofthe "French touch" electronicmovement and started fus-ing techno, jazz, blues, ambiant, house and dub inhis home studio in 1991.After leaving independenttechno label F Corn, StGermain has steeredtowards more jazz -based,live music. This is evident onTourist, which was recorded with threeother musicians and only features fourpure house tracks alongside two samples.

Nicolas Pflug, project and creative man-ager at Blue Note France, believes that St.Germain's new direction is both timely andin keeping with the label's "avant-gardejazz" ethos. He adds: "St Germain is anartist of quality and a precursor of a newmusical genre. His album has come along

at the right moment-when both electroni-ca and jazz were starting to turn in circles."

The single Rose Rouge has held the num-ber one spot on the French DJ Mix chartsfor several weeks running and is playlistedacross a variety of radio formats, includingFIP, RTL, Europe 2, France Inter, andRadio Campus. The video for Rose Rouge ison heavy rotation on French TV channels

M6 and MCM and is antici-pated to go into nightimebroadcasting on MTV.

At national full service sta-tion RTL, programmerPascale Amiaud reports: "Wehad strong reactions from ourlisteners because it is very dif-ferent from our regular pro-gramming. We added the sin-gle to the daytime playlist andworked other tracks for night-time, specifically Sure Thing. It remains a very adult recordbut we are getting a positivewidespread response."

Elsewhere, Tourist tops the UK's DJMag Beats charts and is number two onJazz FM's chart. Switzerland, Spain, Italy,Austria are also reporting encouragingsales and radio airplay, according to EMIFrance international exploitation managerKarina Beuthe. St Germain will be per-forming live from June to December. Hewill appear at the Montreux Jazz Festivalon July 8.
