SETTING OFF ON A NEW YEAR
As the Post Chaplain of Camp Taji in Iraq, I had a Chaplain Guidon (flag with a large white cross on it) that could be posted just outside the main entrance of the Chapel when I was in my office. It would let everyone know if I was there - or not. This isn't something I thought up: It's military custom for Chaplains to do things like this. The problem was that we were at a heightened state of security for most of the time and it seemed to me that the guidon presented more of a target than a public service announcement. Between my Kevlar vest and helmet alone, I was lugging around an extra 42 pounds everywhere I went. So I had my staff fly the flag during worship services, the dates and times of which were already available throughout the post. Just before Christmas, SSLC received the gift of a Christian Flag. Shelly showed it to me and I asked "Don't we already have one in the sanctuary?" She said we did. Upon further investigation, it was determined that this Christian Flag was presented to us to use in a similar fashion to what I was doing in Iraq. U.S. Code on the American Flag realistically only applies to federal/state activities and land - but that doesn't mean we want to ignore it. Looking into it, the American Flag is not to be flown below any flag ... except a religious flag when a Chaplain is leading worship. So ... our plan is to fly the Christian Flag on Sunday mornings. This is not a political statement. It is a theological one. God comes before everything.

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR DARYL
An Apache Helicopter patrols over the Green Zone in Baghdad
during the New Year’s riots that threatened the U.S. Embassy.
The flares in the photo are a defense mechanism that engages
when the aircraft senses specific radar or other threats. At
right : Me in September. Almost home!
Friends,
There is no doubt in my mind that 2020 was a challenging year for you. Things turned upside down so many times that it got
difficult to know which way was up. The pandemic challenged our community and our family in ways we had never
experienced (or likely even thought a possibility) —and yet we found ways to negotiate the unpredictable landscape.
Pastor Angela and Pastor Hollie did incredible work in my absence: I thank God for the good work they did and feel blessed to
come back into the fold with the congregation continuing its mission of Sharing God’s Light and the Love of Jesus Christ into
the Becker/Clear Lake area and beyond.
There is no doubt we will need to double-back on community building when the pandemic threat is finally mitigated, but SSLC
is so far ahead of many churches that will need to grow again from the ground up. I’m excited for this chapter to start.
Here’s a request: My phone number is (651) 341-3787. Please call me and help me catch up with you and your story some
time in the next month.
If I could, I would host an evening get-together and share a slide-show presentation with you detailing my experiences since
last fall. This will likely happen, but probably not until sometime later this spring.
In the meantime, here are the basic facts of my deployment to Iraq.
• I was the senior Chaplain for the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade.
The 34th CAB had more than 110 aircraft, including Apaches, Chinooks, Blackhawks and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
Total troop strength was more than 2,150.
Our personnel were stationed in five different countries almost 20 different locations.
The Brigade Headquarters was located at Camp Taji, which is 15 miles north of Baghdad.
All of my subordinate units had chaplains: and we operated as a team to ensure chaplain coverage.
• I was the Post Chaplain for Camp Taji from December 2019 through August 2020, when the base closed.
At any given time, there were anywhere from 2,000-5,500 personnel on Taji.
With the assistance of my Unit Ministry Teams, I was in charge of Base Chapel operations/facilities.
We dealt with the entire spectrum of life: Soldiers killed in action, missile attacks and bomb strikes, combat missions on a
moment’s notice, more than 250 MEDEVAC missions, family issues back home and problems within the units themselves—
Soldiers are going to be Soldiers and that means that some of them will find trouble … Then there was COVID-19 and all the
issues that came with it. It was a trying year over there. I’m glad to be home.

On Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021 at 6 p.m., Pastor Thul will host a Zoom Teleconference for all Confirmation Small Group Leaders. On Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021 at 6:30 p.m., Pastor Thul will host a Zoom Teleconference for all Confirmation Students. We are in the process of developing a plan to go forward with our Christian Education in a way that does not endanger anyone's health - while at the same time won't just be another class to deal with on the computer. In the meantime, all students should be working on their service hours. A couple of kids picked up credits when they assisted in shoveling on Christmas Eve. That is always an option: Talk to your small group leader or PD about how you can do work around the church. With Pastor Angela gone, we're looking to have congregation members record various readings for us that we can use in our virtual worship service - as well as our services on Sunday mornings. This is an easy one: Pastor Thul can either send you the verses to read and you can send back an MP4 - or you can set up a time and come into SSLC and we can record it here! I've been back since early December and one topic of conversation that has come up involving youth a number of times are the possibility of a mission trip this summer. Here's what I know: The Church Council directed me to begin researching the prospects for this to happen - and then to work on coordinating it with a small group of parents/adults as soon as we can. If you are interested in being on the ground floor of planning, please tell your small group leader or PD. I put this in my newsletter article - but I want to say it here, as well: I very much want to catch up with your stories in the coming month or two. Please send me a text message or call me and we can start the conversation. My phone number is (651) 341-3787. In a lot of ways, it feels like I am starting over here. That's not a good thing or a bad thing - it's just a thing. Please help me in catching up.

MESSAGE FROM LYN PETERSON, COUNCIL PRESIDENT
Merry Christmas everyone! Well, here we are, the end of 2020 is almost upon us! I suspect that since
the majority of the year has been spent in “Pandemic mode”, that most of you will be happy to see 2020
go away & very eager to usher in a much happier, healthier, & back to normal New Year!
I never would have dreamt that when this all started way back in March that we would still be dealing
with mask wearing, social distancing, mass shutdowns of businesses, & limited SSLC church services at
the end of December. Unfortunately, as bad as all of those things are, the real impact has been on the
thousands of individual Minnesotans who have lost their lives due to this awful virus and the strain and
heartache it has caused their families & loved ones who, many times, couldn’t even be with them in
their last days! Let’s hope & pray these vaccines will start to have a real impact on this virus and things
can get back to normal very soon!
What I want to convey most to all of you, however, is how proud I am of our church and congregation for
not letting this pandemic get us down and stop us from hearing and teaching the word of God during all
of this. We have had to get creative and try new ways to go about this during these past several months.
Thankfully, we have had great leadership amongst our Pastors and council and they have gone above
and beyond to try to adapt to all the changes and protocols that have been handed down through all the
government mandates. You too have been willing and able to adapt to these changes and I thank you
for that!
I am also thankful for so many of you who took to heart what was asked of you back in March. And that
was to please continue to give to the mission of SSLC as you were able, to keep our church going during
these tough times. Our church has been fortunate to be blessed by all of you and your continued
generosity. Because of all of us pulling together, we have been able to not only survive during these
unprecedented times, but our church is actually thriving! That is something we can be proud of and
should be very thankful for!
The last thing I want us to think about, with the coming of the new year, is change. We have been so
blessed to have Pastor Angela and Pastor Hollie with us during this most difficult year. They worked so
well together and made it look so easy as they provided us with online, drive-up, and in person services!
But, as things do, things change. Pastor Hollie’s time with us ended on November 1st and now Pastor
Angela’s tenure has come to an end as well. Both will be deeply missed by our congregation! But the
good news is, we have Pastor Daryl back with us!! It seems he is as happy to be back as we are to have
him back! What I would ask all of us to keep in mind going forward, however, is the fact that Pastor Daryl
is not Pastor Hollie or Pastor Angela and there is going to be change. He is only one person and we have
to be open to things looking and feeling just a bit different than we have gotten used to in the past 15
months while he was gone. Please come to worship with him, but please give him some grace, some
space, some compassion, some support, and some time, as he figures out the Pastor Daryl way of
serving SSLC in this coming year and beyond!
God’s Peace and Happy New Year to all of you,
Lyn Peterson SSLC Council President

PASTOR DARYL’S SCHEDULE
MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ANGELA
The apostle Paul was a missionary and church planter throughout his ministry in the
early church, and so he was constantly starting up churches and then leaving them in
the capable hands of other leaders. And so, I turn to one of his
letters for some parting words:
I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of
my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.
I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion
by the day of Jesus Christ. -Philippians 1:3-6
I thank God, and will continue to thank God, for the people and the ongoing ministry of SSLC. You have been
such a blessing to me and my family in this time of my first call, and I thank you for that. I have seen the Spirit at
work in this place, and I know that whatever 2021 brings, this congregation will meet it together, guided by the
love of Christ. You will be in my prayers and in my heart.
May God bless you. May God bless Pastor Daryl and the church council as they continue to lead the
congregation in these uncharted waters. And may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in
him into 2021. Happy New Year!
Love in Christ,
Pastor Angela

KINGDOM KIDS AND BREAKFAST CLUB INFORMATION
Meet on Jan. 17, Feb. 21, March 21, April 18
Children through Fourth Grade are invited to attend
the monthly “Kingdom Kids” in-person lessons and
activities. It will go from 0915-0945 AM and should be a lot of fun.
Right now, we are developing a script to produce a video sharing the
Story of Jesus’ Ministry and family members of all ages can come, get
into costume and play a role. These are generally pretty short lines and
don’t take long to complete.
Families who are not able to participate in person will have the
opportunity to ask for and receive roles that they can video record at
home and send in for inclusion in the (obviously) high quality feature
film that will likely be around 14 minutes long at most. Carla Griffin is
heading up this project and will be sending out details the week before.
Since there is more than a single Sunday in the month, we will be
posting material on our website, www.sslcmn.org, for children to view on
Sunday mornings as an option. Various Sunday School teachers will be
taking turns in producing these short segments based on the same
lessons that are used in worship at SSLC that Sunday.
COVID PHASE 2 GUIDELINES
Meet on Jan. 17, Feb. 21, March 21, April 18
The Club meets at the same time on the third
Sunday of the month and the Group’s
Coordinator, Shelly Peterson, hopes to see the
numbers start to build especially as the pandemic
coast begins to clear. These students in grades
5-6 and their families will also be encouraged to
participate in the video production.
Pastor’s Note: Unless something happens with
health concerns, this will likely be the schedule
through Easter. If you haven’t already, I
encourage you to help your children get into their
Bible weekly – the Children’s Storybook, the Lego
or the Confirmation one. It really doesn’t matter
where you start or end on any given session, the
big thing is that you do it.
