The Academy was represented by Murphy Jensen, a for- mer French Open Doubles Champion, and Vince Schmidt, a coach to several ATP and WTA tour players. Coordinated by member Daryl Harper with Head Pro Allan Overland and a group of volunteers including several juniors in support, the event was an unqualified success and truly inspirational to participants and spectators alike. Based on this success, there may be an opportunity for another session later in the year, with perhaps an even larger attendance. As the summer Open season draws near, we hear of members discussing plans for Paris and London. The rest of us will just have to play on our home courts and catch television coverage in between matches. Game on! F ROM THE B OARD S UBMITTED BY D AVE P RESUHN

JUN IO R RE S ULTS S U B M I T T E D B Y J I M R O B I S O N

Boeing juniors had another good month of tournament play in April. Amol Koli continued to perform at a high level in the Boy’s 14’s as he won the Seattle City Advanced tourna-ment held the first weekend of the month. Amol, the #3 seed, knocked off the # 1 seed in the final 6-1, 6-7, 10-6. Amol also did well in the 16 singles, winning 3 match-es before withdrawing prior to the semifinal match. Jake Kim also played the Seattle City Advanced tour-nament, competing in Boy’s 18 Singles. Jake lost a close first round match in the main draw. He then played well in the consolation round, making it to the consolation final where Jake lost to the #4 seed. Erika Ito also had a great Seattle City Advanced tour-nament. Erika was seeded second and won three matches before losing in a tight 5-7, 7-6, 6-7 final to the #3 seed. Playing up in the 16 Singles, Erika won her first round before falling to the top seed in her next match. Later in the month, Erika again did well at the Girl’s 14 Advanced at the Sprinker Tennis Club in Taco-ma. As the #1 seed, she won two matches before los-ing in her second final of the month. Kaitlin Tan had a busy April, playing in three tourna-ments. At the Seattle City Advanced tournament, Kaitlin played up in age in the Girl’s 18 singles. She had a tough opening match against the #2 seed, losing 6-4, 6-1. A week later at the Mint Valley Spring Junior Ad-vanced tournament in Longview, Kaitlin, once again

playing in the 18 singles, lost her first round match against the #2 seed and eventual champion. She bounced back well winning the consolation bracket, losing only three games in her final two matches. The next weekend, Kaitlin played in the 16 singles at the Olympia Steamboat Tennis Advanced tournament. Seeded #3, she won two matches before losing a tough semi-final in three sets to the #1 seed. Marcus Lee was the #2 seed in the Boy’s 16 Singles at the Mint Valley Spring Junior Advanced tournament. He lost a tough three-setter in the semi-finals 7-6, 5-7, 5-7. Marcus then went on to win three matches on his way to winning the consolation bracket. Congratulations to nine year old Isabella Leon for her performance at the “Little Mo” Pacific Northwest Sec-tional tournament in Tacoma, competing in the yellow ball division of this 10 and under tournament. After losing in a tiebreaker in her first match, she went on to win her next two matches in the consolation bracket 8-2 and 8-2. In winning the consolation bracket, Isabella qualified for the “Little Mo” regional tournament to be held July 28-30 in California. Way to go, Isabella! Many BETC juniors will be competing in local high school post season tournaments during the month of May, concluding with State tournaments held over Memorial Day weekend. Look for the results in next month’s newsletter. Good luck to all of our juniors!

The overhead smash is a shot often neglected by the average club player. Many club players fail to practice the overhead smash enough. Most errors on overheads are caused by either bad timing or poor footwork. To time your overhead correctly you need to be aware of what type of spin your opponent’s lob has. If the lob has top-spin it will dip faster so you will need to swing earlier. If the lob has underspin it will tend to hang in the air longer so you will need to wait longer before hitting the ball. Make sure you move your feet enough so the ball is slightly in front of your head before hitting your overhead. You can practice this by catching the lob with your non-dominate hand slightly in front of you. The ball machine is a great tool for practicing your timing and footwork on your overhead. First practice hitting lobs sent from the ball machine with heavy topspin. With the ball machine placed near the baseline, set the spin nob to topspin #5. The height nob should be at 10 and the

power nob at 4.5. This will produce a nice topspin lob. Then set the spin nob to underspin 2 and practice hitting under spin lobs. Re-member when swinging at a topspin lob start your swing earlier. When swinging at an underspin lob start your swing later. Make sure you get your feet under the ball. To improve your footwork on your overhead practice catching a few lobs with your non-dominant hand. You should catch the ball about a foot in front of you. Once you practice your timing and work on your overheads you will be surprised how easy it is to hit an overhead smash.

Be honest, how much time do you spend practicing over-heads? Most club players hit 5-7 overheads when warming up for a match, but that’s it. Next time you book a ball machine, change the height, spin and speed settings to get some extra work in.

Good luck to our many juniors that will be participating in high school district and state tour-naments in May!
