Volume 24 Issue 1 Thursday 1st February 2018 F acilities Update - Additional Classrooms Last year, during the course of term 4, Brentwood Park Primary took possession of four additional portable classrooms which were delivered, sited and ready for occupation before the end of term as scheduled. However, with a further increase in enrolment evident last year, an additional two classrooms, at least, were required. After an anxious wait and concern expressed over our ability to accommodate all our students for the start of the new school year, our additional classrooms finally arrived on Monday 22 January. Given that the Australia Day holiday was on 26 January and school commenced on 29 January, there were approximately four days to have them ready for occupation along with concrete paths laid for access! A very short timeframe indeed but it was achieved and with staff collectively moving furniture and teacher resources on 29 January, Year 2AD and Year 2 AA were able to take possession of their teaching spaces on the first day of school! S tart of School Despite the wet conditions on Tuesday, its pleasing to report to our community, the extremely smooth start to the school year. With an enrolment of 863 students, which is almost 200 more than the previous year, books were quickly unpacked, welcomes and introductions exchanged and lessons readily commenced! Thanks are forwarded to the staff who worked so industriously in the week before the students commenced to ensure such a smooth start to the year. The classrooms were organized, colourful and welcoming! The efforts of the children themselves, assisted by their parents, must also be acknowledged. The manner in which they commenced the 2018 school year is commendable. Our cohort of 149 preps settled extremely well into their first year of school! With photographs taken by accompanying parents, final hugs were exchanged and the children soon became absorbed in their classroom activities. The collage of photographs on the following pages has captured the excitement and engagement of our first day! www.brentwoodparkps.vic.edu.au term dates 2018 term 1 30 jan - 29 march term 2 16 april - 29 june term 3 16 july - 21 sept term 4 08 oct - 21 dec 30 jan students commence for 2018 02 feb first canteen day for 2018 15 feb swimming trials 15 feb Chinese New Year of the Dog ….. 08 mar foundation year family evening 20 mar harmony day jim bell, principal jenny reid, assistant principal DATES TO REMEMBER 2018 C.S.E.F. S taff Welcome Twelve new staff members and one former staff member have joined us in 2018. A sincere

welcome is extended to eight new classroom teachers Bronwyn Coombs and Jasmine Hill, teaching Year Prep, Kirsty Courtis teaching Year 1, Ashlea Anderson and Amy Kleinsmit teaching Year 2, Marissa Shami teaching Year 3, Gabriela Douglas teaching Year 4 and Leah McCartney teaching Year 5. Within the specialist team we welcome Shuyue He teaching Chinese Language and Culture, Jessica Murphy teaching Visual Arts, and Kenneth Mills and Troy Cartwright teaching Performing Arts. Former staff member, Danielle Ackland, returning from family leave, has been assigned an additional assistance role and will work with identified students in need of literacy support. I’m confident our new staff will find being part of Brentwood Park a rewarding and professionally satisfying experience.

M usical Notes from Kenneth and Troy, our Musos

Kenneth - I have been a Performing Arts/Music teacher for 18 years. My passion for music and theatre started when I was involved in band as a teenager. I was lucky enough to tour the USA, Canada and England and to also play alongside jazz greats like James Morrison and Don Burrows. I am always working towards making a difference in a child’s life through creating an environment for children to take a risk and discover the joy of the ‘Performing Arts.’ Troy - Hello, I’m Troy your new Performing Arts and Music specialist. I have a wealth of experience teaching and creating musical performances such as theatre and dance routines. I want to share my love and passion for Performing Arts and Music with the children at Brentwood Park Primary School. Thankyou for this great honour.

S chool Assemblies School assemblies are held in our gymnasium each Friday at 2:40 p.m. They provide us with the

opportunity to address the children collectively and to give recognition to student achievement through the presentation of student awards such as Stars of the Week and student performances. Our assemblies are conducted by our student leaders and parents are encouraged to attend!

S chool Dismissal Times This year, will have a slight amendment to our school

dismissal time. School now concludes at 3:20 p.m. This slight amendment has been the result of ensuring staff, when on yard duty, have the opportunity to at least have a half hour lunch break, free from prescribed duties.

P arent Modelling of Safe Practices Whether in the role of pedestrian or driver, it is important that adults model safe practices to their

children and to others! What message do we convey when we drive and park unlawfully or cross roads unsafely! The City of Casey provides school crossing supervisors to enable parents and students to cross roads safely when coming to school and when leaving school upon dismissal. Please use the school crossing and then walk the short distance to your parked car. The safety of our children must come before any perceived slight inconvenience by not doing so! SAFETY FIRST. Please DO NOT park in the school drop off/pick up zone. Please DO NOT double park alongside parked cars and please DO NOT park in the adjoining doctor’s surgery or kindergarten. Parking infringement notices have been known to be issued.

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE.

Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them off

their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are required to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm bookings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the De-partment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
