RETIRED hairdresser Norm Wrightson says he still laughs about the day a mouse popped out of a client’s mop of hair at his barber shop in Fremantle.

“This guy comes into the shop and he’s about six foot-six and he has more hair than you,” the sprightly 89-year-old chuckled, pointing to this journo’s tangled curls and bushranger beard.

“Fedele, one of the hairdressers that used to work for me, put a comb through his hair and a white mouse jumped out. It was the guy’s pet mouse.

“As Fedele was a very excitable Italian, you could only imagine his reaction.”

After 60 years cutting hair at his now-iconic William Street shop Mr Wrightson downed the clippers in 1999.

He still aff ectionately remembers his dad Bob opening the place back in 1933.

“There were two chairs—my father Bob and my grandfather Ernie were both hairdressers.

“The rent was a pound a week, but there was a barber

shop on every corner so you had to be pretty good to stay in competition.

“I left school when I was 15 and my ambition was to be a hairdresser and musician. That’s exactly what happened. Dad retired and I eventually took over the business in 1973.”

The Bicton local says he still could cut it today as a barber, 14 years after hanging up the scissors.

“You wouldn’t believe it but from the time we started the style has come back practically exactly the same,” he says. “When I started it was all short back and sides. We went through the whole works—the fl at top, crew cuts, mohawks—we did everything.”

Mr Wrightson says when he was approached by current owner Morteza Shojaee to celebrate the 80th anniversary of his old digs he was expecting a low-key event.

“I thought he meant he would take us to a restaurant, but he said he was hiring out the town hall,” he laughed. “I thought, gee this is ambitious.”

So Mr Wrightson rang up some muso mates including the original vocalist of his orchestra

The Norm Wrightson Band, Dane Gorn, to see if they would dust off the smoking jackets for a one-off show.

Norm Wrightson’s Hairway Salute to Fremantle shindig is at the Fremantle Town Hall this Sunday (October 27) 1–5pm. The nostalgic arvo will feature the George Franklin Big Band, the Zing Swing Dancers and a few surprises.

Mr Wrightson, an accomplished saxophone and clarinet player, says he still remembers the wild nights playing at Victoria Hall in post-war Fremantle.

“Mum would be in the ticket box, dad would be taking the tickets and my brother was the chief chucker-outer as they were called in those days,” he says.

“If there was any trouble I would put the sax down and help him. On this particular night he was in strife so I grabbed the bloke and he smashed the table behind me.

“I go back and play in the band and there is blood everywhere. I got home and I’m bent over the table and my wife is taking glass out of my bottom.

“Fremantle was an exciting place then.”

Roads victims of political procrastinationSTATE Liberal governments have never been enthusiastic abour transport infrastructure.

It was a case of déjà vu when the premier announced Roe 8 would not be built during this term of government.

He is rather optimistic to expect there will be another one.

I recall the Liberals’ procrastination with starting the Fremantle bypass—critical to the identifi ed future road transport needs in the area.

This and otherstalled projects resulted in Labor being elected. The fi rst thing it did was write the bypass out of the metropolitan planning scheme to assist in retaining the seat for a Fremantle politician.

With the Greens and myopic environmentalists gaining succour by Labor affi liation, I expect by delaying Roe 8 we will see the inevitable outcome of political procrastination.

Daryl BinningNorton Ridge, Winthrop

Show me the money!THE Herald (October 19, 2013) reported Mayor Russell Aubrey’s annoyance at Roe 8 being delayed.

Could you point out to Mr Aubrey WA has lost its credit rating, owes millions, and bills will be mounting for state works under way—he obviously doesn’t know.

Perhaps he could tell us where the Roe project’s dollars ($600 million) are to be found.

Alex BrimsHelen St, Applecross

Please hold...PEOPLE don’t phone you back. It seems to happen more these days: You phone someone and you get an answer from the receptionist or a machine.

I am sorry the person you want to speak to is on the phone. Another favourite is, he is in a meeting, or the person you would like to speak to is out of the offi ce, could you give me your phone number and I will get so and so to call you back.

As soon as you hang up, you can be assured in most cases that will never happen, no matter whether it be a private company, government department, or an individual.

If you give a mobile phone number there is less chance of a call back. It can be annoying as the matter could be important.

Frank GrangerMelville Bch Rd, Applecross

Council to blameI AM not sure of the point of W Trevor Tobin’s letter (Herald, October 19, 2013) when on the one hand he says he fi nds it hard to believe the CEO of the City of Melville has been given authority to sell assets valued up to $8 million without approval from the elected council and then connects this with the loss of $20 million-plus of ratepayers’ funds in very doubtful investment. The $20m loss was caused by the incompetence of the elected council, which included June Barton, the current mayor and other current councillors.

RB HalvorsenHickey St, Ardross

Check the hairI DON’T know how much money Murray Slavin is making, Greg Smith (Herald letters, October 19, 2013)—not a lot, judging from his coiff ure—but he IS very busy livening up the West End with an outstanding new building on Cliff Street. So keep an eye on that space, Greg, each time you make the long trek from Bayswater.

Seriously misguidedTHE views expressed by John Dowson about the JS Battye library staff (Herald, October 19, 2013) were not only acrimonious but seriously misguided.

I have used Battye for research for many years now. The fact is it houses more than one million catalogued WA photographs (and the collection is growing) most of which are shared with the National Library of Australia—Trove electronic database.

The JS Battye library is a major WA asset staff ed by very professional, knowledgeable, helpful people very capable of assisting any member of the public to fi nd information, including photographs.

May I suggest Mr Dowson apologise to Battye staff and asks them to show him how to access and use the cataloguing system for photographs so his vacuous, rancorous and unsubstantiated criticisms can be put to rest.

The criticism of staff proff ered by Mr Dowson is undeserving if one takes the time to learn how to use cataloguing systems in the Battye that have evolved over many years. The systems are not all perfect; however, I have observed the library is continually improving them as resources become available.

The unjustifi ed ad hominem criticism of Battye staff speaks more about Mr Dowson’s general myopia than it does about the incredibly professional and dedicated staff working diligently to maintain and support the various state library collections, including the state photographic collection. Staff of the state library deserve accolades, not mindless criticism, for the very fi ne services they provide for all Western Australians and others.

Dr Graham MahonyWarragoon Cres, Attadale(PS: In the early 1930s the Mill

at South Perth was given to WA as a centenary gift. My grandfather GHW Long unveiled the plaque and JS Battye gave the speech at the dedication ceremony)

Undeserved scornGOODNESS me, John Dowson appears to have got hot under the collar (Herald, October 19, 2013).

It’s a great surprise to me that any historian worth their salt would have a derogatory attitude to photographs. As the eminent French historian Marc Bloch wrote in 1943, “the variety of historical evidence is nearly infi nite”.

And this includes not only photographs, but objects, buildings, diaries, journals, and a host of documentary evidence, all grist to the historian’s mill, as John would surely know.

The serve at the hard-pressed staff of Battye library seems a bit mean-spirited. Such scorn would be better visited on successive governments who have not provided adequate funding to to the state library. Staff at the library battle to do the best they can with limited resources: To label them all “just bureaucrats” is unjust and untrue. But I would have thought that John knew that.

The best that can be said for this article, is that it promoted the always worthwhile Fremantle Studies Day on October 27 on the front page of the Herald. Maybe that was the point.

ANOTHER local history buff has joined award-winning author John Dowson in criticising the state library for being too focussed on written material (“Photo snobs fail history: Dowson”, Herald, October 19, 2013).

Richard Rennie founded his own Museum of WA’s recorded sound after the library gave away the bulk of its 50,000-strong record collection a couple of years ago.

The Melville resident says while most of the collection is trivial pop music which took up valuable space, he’d seen about 100 rare recordings he thought should have been kept and made available to researchers and the public.

“For example there were recordings of coronations, voice of King George V, voice of the aviator Amy Johnson (who came to WA on one of her record-breaking fl ights),” Mr Rennie told the Herald.

“These records are now safe in the hand of collectors, but no longer available to the public.”

He says since starting the Museum of Early Western Australian Recorded Sound he’s tracked down a signifi cant number of rare WA recordings he says should be in the hands of the state.

One includes a 1928 recording of a promising young Perth cornetist who’d taken a South Australian music competition by storm and was whisked away by record producers.

The vagaries of recording loud instruments back in the ‘20s resulted in a patchy performance that earned the young horn player the wrath of his music teacher who wanted all copies destroyed. Some survived to pay testament to the fl eeting musical stardom of one Charles Court,

• Richard Rennie says the state library doesn’t pay enough attention to the state’s recorded history, echoing concerns by historian John

Dowson that it pays scant attention to media other than written documents. Photo by Steve Grant

later premier of the state and knighted for his services to the state, if not the cornet.

Mr Rennie also has a wax cylinder of the earliest known surviving recording in WA, of Albany Salvation Army offi cer and cornetist Ensign Suridge in January 1907. He was able to date the recording after a

chance discovery; when the music fi nished he’d let the wax cylinder continue to play, only to hear a voice a few moments later noting Suridge had died a month after the recording.

But state librarian Margaret Allen says only recordings directly relevant to WA are now kept.

“Our focus is on all Western Australian recordings in all formats, particularly on limited lifespan works such as those recorded privately and/or not commercially published,” Ms Allen told the Herald.

“We collect all current formats, print and digital. Vinyl, 78 rpm and cassette recordings will only be collected if they have Western Australian relevance.”

Ms Allen said new legal deposits regulations are due to be rolled out from January 2014, which will see record companies required to lodge new recordings with the library, boosting its music catalogue.

A FIVE-STOREY block of 34 units in Attadale has been approved after the state administrative tribunal ordered mediation between the applicant and a local authority that had rejected the application.

The Melville development assessments panel had found the application only had fi ve

per cent open space when the usual requirement is 25 per cent.

Gavin Constructions appealed the DAP’s rejection to the SAT.

Following mediation the DAP’s only elected member present, Cr Clive Robartson, still voted against the proposal but the body’s three government-appointed members Charles Johnson, Rory O’Brien and Luigi D’Alessandro voted for it.

REBECCA AUBREY—the mayor’s daughter—pulled in 54 per cent of Melville’s city ward vote to unseat incumbent Effi e Nicholson last weekend, and become the only new face on the council.

In other wards, three incumbents were easily returned and two former councillors made comebacks.

In Bull Creek-Leeming ward veteran incumbent Clive Robartson strolled back with 70 per cent of the vote, in Bicton-Attadale former mayor June Barton was easily returned with 66pc and in university ward Nicole Foxton was comfortably re-elected with 50pc against two challengers.

In Palmyra-Melville-Willagee former councillor Trish Phelan made a comeback, taking 37.5pc of the vote in a four-horse race. Her nearest challenger was local P&C president Lisa O’Malley (34pc).

It was a similar story in Applecross-Mt Pleasant ward, with former councillor Cameron Schuster taking 45pc of the vote in a fi ve-candidate race.

WHILE most of us look at a carrot and think salad, multi-instrumentalist Linsey Pollak sees a clarinet.

For more than 30 years Pollak has garnished a reputation for creating and playing instruments made from household objects, including watering cans, chairs, bins, brooms, rubber gloves and vegetables.

He is also regarded as a pioneer of Australia’s multicultural music scene, having set up the North Perth Ethnic Music Centre—now Freo-based Kulcha—back in 1983.

“At the time I was living in Sydney and was thinking of setting up a multicultural centre there, but on a trip to Perth I saw a concert that had some amazing musicians, so I thought I’d do it Perth,” he told the Herald. “We created the centre at North Perth because there was a lot of ethnic communities around there. It really was the right place at the right time. But there was also the diversity and vibrancy.

“There were some very good musicians. The quality was incredible.”

The Brisbane-based muso is heading back to Fremantle in early November as part of Kulcha’s 30th anniversary shindig.

He says when he started up the famous Cafe Folkorico nights at the North Perth Town Hall three decades ago locals raised on a diet of Skyhooks and LRB were rarely exposed to ethnic musicians.

“At the time there was very little recognition of musicians from non-English backgrounds,” he says.

“It gave the musicians from these backgrounds a chance to play at a venue other than a festival.”

As part of Kulcha’s birthday soiree Pollak is reviving Cafe Folkorico for two nights on November 1 and 2.

He says he’s stoked his idea to host a few ethnic musicians in a town hall all those years ago has grown into one of Australia’s most enduring multicultural arts organisations.

“It was something I wanted to do for one year, because fi rst and foremost I am an musician,” he says.

“We started something that was not only crucial for Perth and WA, but a fl agship project for Australia, because there was no other centre of its type. I had no idea it would last 30 years.”

• Rebecca Aubrey (left) defeated Effi e Nicholson in Melville’s city ward and will join her father Russell—the

mayor—on the council.

CONSERVATIONISTS say they are prepared to lie down in front of bulldozers with the Barnett government planning to clear land for Roe 8 as early as next year.

Two weeks ago WA premier Colin Barnett said the highway through the Beeliar wetlands would not be built in this term of government because he didn’t have the money for it.

When local Greens pollie Lynn MacLaren grilled WA transport minister Troy Buswell this week in parliament about Roe 8, he didn’t rule out bringing in the ‘dozers to prepare the way.

Save Beeliar Wetlands convenor Kate Kelly says members are prepared to risk their lives, they feel that strongly about protecting the wetlands.

“Any move to clear trees or plants from the proposed road reserve will meet

swift defence from our newly formed direct action group,” she told the Herald.

“We are currently training and planning for any adverse or destructive activity from Main Roads and encourage anyone who wishes to join us to contact us via our website.

“North and Bibra Lakes and the tuarts, marri and banksia trees that surround them off er an amazing habitat and sanctuary for wildlife and humans we need to stand up for these special places while we still have them.”

Ms MacLaren says any clearing will have devastating eff ects.

“Any partial clearing of any signifi cant trees in the road development envelope may cause wildlife to die and will aff ect the ongoing ecological viability and connectivity of the whole precinct,” she says.

“Local people are naturally worried concerned that clearing would aff ect the status of threatened species in North Lake

reserve alongside sensitive aboriginal cultural sites.

“There are alternatives to this expensive destructive extension”.

WA Labor transport shadow Ken Travers says clearing the way before fi nding the money to build the road is “foolish and ultimately will lead to environmental vandalism”.

“It all sounds too familiar, prior to the 2001 state election then-resources minister Colin Barnett cleared the site for a future Oakajee Port, but the port has still not been built,” Mr Travers pointed out.

“The clearing of the land would just be another example of the Barnett government’s cynical approach in promising this road but never intending to actually build it.

“This road will not fi x the congestion problems in the southern suburbs and the Barnett government cannot fund the project due to Mr Barnett blowing billions on building monuments in the CBD.”

Roetesters willing to ‘risk their lives’

by BRENDAN FOSTER

SIMONE McGURK says a $31 million spruce up of the rail terminal in Fremantle will do nothing to reduce truck traffi c barreling into the port city.

On Wednesday the Abbott and Barnett governments announced their jointly-funded 290-metre expansion of the North Quay Rail Terminal to 690m would “help reduce the growth of port-related truck traffi c by increasing rail capacity.”

Ms McGurk says the “rail upgrade

is good” but there’s nothing from the government about getting more freight on rail and off trucks.

“That is a disgrace, and means more trucks, more pollution and unsafe roads,” she says.

“They say they have a goal to reach 30 per cent freight on rail, but when I asked the minister how he would achieve this goal, all he could say was ‘not sure’.”

Road to Rail convenor Annolies Truman says investing in rail saves money.

“The $31 million that will be spent on this rail improvement is about a quarter

of the cost of the proposed widening of High Street and a fraction of the cost of bulldozing the Beeliar wetlands (for Roe 8).

“Imagine how clean and safe our community would be if Mr Buswell committed to designating the freight rail line as the main route for getting freight to and from the port?

“We are concerned that low volumes of freight on rail and diminishing investment in state shipping have placed a disproportionate load on our roads, resulting in projects to expand road capacity.”

Not all Electricians are the same... most contractors don’t turn up when they say, if at all & when they do they are often rude, unpleasant & leave you with an unfair bill, a messy

house & feeling really annoyed.Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”. I know good, reliable tradies are

hard to fi nd, that’s why I guarantee you’ll have me arrive

on time. I’ll be courteous, respectful & in uniform. I will

the job & leave you with a smile. If you’re not happy at the end

you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)Tidy your desk. Do your laundry. Be specifi c about meeting up with your

friends. Know who you want to see, and when and how. Take care of all the tiny little details that you would normally accelerate over. You now have the energy for this style of play. Try it out - with totality.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)All the circle-dancing of avoidance is over. Truth is quite a simple thing when we get

down to it. With defensiveness and anxiety out of the way, truth has a completely different ring than when such things are clouding the issue. It’s time for contact. It’s time for a breakthrough.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)Mercury, the planet of communica-tion, is retrograde - and in Scorpio.

Scorpions tends towards laying low at the best of times, so with Mercury in here, it’s hardly likely that people are going to be forthright. This is not an easy time for you who would like to share. Take it slowly.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)The Moon begins its week in Cancer, charging you up with emotion.

Generally your inclination is to go out and take care of other people’s feelings, rather than feel your own. This moment is too much of a hot potato to get away with that manoeuvre. Be at home in your own heart.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)Slowly, after a succession of bright successes and problematic misses,

you are rising into a new sense of personal authority. This one is less frantic and ego driven. The genuine you is starting to shine. There are less spotlights, but infi nitely more respect. Be natural and unassuming.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)Mars is in your garden. Mars is adventurous, wilful, strong and a little bit

wild. He is a force to be reckoned with. He may be a part of yourself that you are beginning to fi nd, or he may come in the form of a tall dark stranger. Accept him as he is - and he gives. Don’t, and he gets cross.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)As the Sun moves into Scorpio, so it is cooling off time for Librans. After

excitement it is healthy to withdraw and digest. If you think that you must stay excited all the time, you’ll wear out your nervous system in no time fl at. Relaxation is what is called for. Gently put it into place.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)The Sun is shining brightly in your direction. This means vitality,

clarity and considerable strength are yours for the taking. Be yourself and you will break those curses of conditioning that keep you from fully bursting with creativity. This is your time to fl ower. Be colourful.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Venus continues to warm you up and inspire you to seek even deeper and more

exotic delights. The choice is whether to take one particular delight and go deep into all the possibilities inherent in it, or to take a bite out of every item on the shelf. Let radiant awareness be your guide.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)In astrology, the goat has a fi shes tail. This has always been a great mystery.

What does a mountain climbing beast need with a fi shes tail? It suggests that we must deal with the depths as well as height. Depth provides the contrast that makes the heights shine. Slow it all down.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)To lock horns with all the conservative forces around you is an interesting pastime

but it’s not always a particularly nourishing one. To fi ght against limits is practically an instinctive habit for Aquarians. At some point you might consider accepting them. This may just free things up.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)Life is challenging you to take a position. To stay in the role of perpetual

student while others bask in the light of their self-proclaimed authority, isn’t really delivering meaningful experience. You don’t have to be like anybody else. Claim your strength in your own creative way.

by STEVE GRANTAMENDMENT 49 sailed through Fremantle council Wednesday night.

The changes to the council’s city planning scheme, touted as the biggest to hit Fremantle since CY O’Connor’s harbour was built, will now be sent to WA planning minister John Day for approval after winning unanimous support from councillors.Despite his support for the

amendment, Cr Jon Strachan presented a 732-signature petition calling for a maximum six storeys. It was not supported (the Woolstores shopping centre site will be allowed 10 storeys).

Councillors remained stony-faced as the petition was presented,

dismissive tone in the voice of CEO

Graeme Mackenzie as he pointed out almost half the signatures came from non-residents.Cr Josh Wilson said it was

Their demand sought to pre-empt any decision by the WA environment department to extend a temporary operational licence. That decision was expected yesterday (Friday March 30, 2012).

Jandakot MP Joe Francis and Riverton MP Mike Nahan—who occupy two of the Liberal-National government’s most marginal seats—are demanding that premier Colin Barnett deal with the issue once and for all.“Colin said he’s going to take

it up,” Mr Francis told the Herald. “If he can’t take it up, there’s something wrong with democracy.

THE doctor who set up the

says the hospital’s emergency

non-critical patients when the

Professor Max Kamien says

patients with social problems and

FREMANTLE

HERALDby BRENDAN FOSTER

A FRENCH busker has pleaded guilty to a charge of assault after snipping a lock of hair from a festival-goer at last weekend’s Fremantle Street Arts Festival.

Madcap mime artist Rodolphe Couthouis—aka Flochard—was given a spent conviction, but was slugged $125 in court costs.

“Everything is over and I’m a free man!” he laughed. “I am not a haircut criminal.”

Mr Couthouis says a woman who later insisted on his being charged had burst out laughing when he snipped off a ringlet while performing his rst show Blah Blah Blah on Easter Saturday.

“During the show, when I can see someone without hair on his head, I look at someone with long hair, and think maybe I can help the person with no hair,” he told the Herald. “I go to my bag and get my scissors out, come next to the woman and cut a little piece of hair and put it on his head.

“I did it very slowly—three times I look at her, look at him, so she can see what I’m doing.

“She laughed and everybody laughed.”

The street artist was gobsmacked when the cops phoned, asking him to head down to the Fremantle police station so he could be charged with assault.

The Herald understands Fremantle city council—the festival’s organiser—tried to head things off by offering the aggrieved woman a free haircut and 50 bucks, but she wouldn’t have a bar of it.

“I was thinking this must be a joke—are you kidding?” Mr Couthouis said. “I spent a long time at the of ce, trying to nd a solution, trying to nd a lawyer, worrying what’s going to happen.

“It’s so stupid and ridiculous.”Originally told to front the

Fremantle Magistrates Court on May 11 he pleaded for the case to be brought forward to Thursday April 12 as he was due to y out that night.

The Frenchman said he wouldn’t be changing his routine anytime soon: “I did it 50 times during my shows and never had a problem,” he said. “It seems like a lot of problem for a piece of hair.

“I didn’t cut her nger off.” • Rodolphe Couthouis—aka Flochard—surrenders to a hair-raising charge of assault. Photo by Steve Grant• More festival photos by Matthew Dwyer on pages 6 and 7.
