Greetings fellow GMAC members.
It was great to see so many of you at our September general education meeting. We
have another outstanding session planned for Wednesday, November 7. I hope to
see all of you there.
Earlier this month, several of us traveled to Sage headquarters in Carey, IL for an
inspirational Multiregional Collaborative Workshop for Regions 8 & 10. It was a won-
derful opportunity to network with our sister chapters in Wisconsin, Illinois, and
Michigan. We all had the privilege of meeting our former AACN President, Dave Han-
son, and listening to his motivational presentation entitled Dare to Be … Extraordi-
nary. Dave challenged us to find purpose and passion in our lives, both profession-
ally and personally. He encouraged us to never settle for average but to strive to be
extraordinary in all that we do.
A special highlight of the Multiregional Workshop was Kathy Epping’s presentation
on last year’s GMAC-sponsored Professional Networking night. What a proud mo-
ment for our chapter and a great chance to showcase one of the many activities that
we are involved in. Kathy also led an interactive session on event planning with the
attendees that led to many creative ideas! Many thanks to Kathy for representing
GMAC so well.
The annual CCRN/PCCN re-
view held in September was a
huge success thanks to the hard work of Dave Budzien and his team – Mary Jo
Palmstein, Mary Kay Feeney, Shanita Washington, Holly Clanton, Pam Konrath, and
Kathy Williams. 50 nurses attended and participated in this exceptional educational
experience.
We are still looking for a treasurer-elect to work with Mary Kay Feeney this year and
transition into the treasurer role for the 2013-2014 chapter year. The elect positions
are a great way to get your feet wet and learn everything you need to know before
you are officially in the role. Board learning partner positions are also available and
offer another awesome opportunity to become more involved in chapter leadership.
Please let me or any of the other board members know if you are interested.
Thanks to everyone who shared their “Dares” for this chapter year. Writing our dares
down is a big step toward achieving them. I urge you to check out our “Dare to…”
poster at our next educational meeting and add your “dare” for 2012-2013. What
will we Dare to accomplish together?

who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely
forgotten, completely left alone.” -Mother Teresa
When I was younger my dad would always say, “Charity begins at home.” I was
too naïve to really understand the power of this simple phrase. As a teenager I
viewed charity as donating large sums of money to a cause, most likely over-
seas or a developing country. As I grew older I began to see that often times the
most charitable things we can do for ourselves and others does not involve lots
of fanfare or money. Charitable acts do not have to necessarily cross oceans,
but can cross offices, units or imaginary lines. It can be the small, simple acts of compassion and kindness that we
show one another on a daily basis that can affect great change. Charity can be a small donation or a canned good
but it can be as simple as a smile, a handshake, or a listening ear. It can be time spent teaching a student or men-
toring a new nurse. It can be giving ourselves or someone else a break when the day is long and workload heavy.
As nurses we have tremendous power to affect great change in our personal and professional lives.
GMAC and its members have always been committed to community outreach. At the October Educational Meeting
GMAC introduced its 2012-2013 Community Outreach Partnership with Growing Power, nonprofit organization. We
were able to raffle off a beautiful basket of fresh fruits and vegetables from the organization’s urban farm. Thank
you for your contributions. I would also like to extend a warm thank you to all members who gave their time and
energy to staff the Briggs & Al’s Walk & Run Medical Tent. Your presence was greatly appreciated and an essential
component to the event’s success.
As we move forward this year I would like to DARE myself and others to look at all the opportunities before us in
which we can be charitable and get involved. You may choose to participate in GMAC’s Community Outreach Part-
nership with Growing Power, nonprofit organization through a donation towards their Vertical Farm (see below). You
may choose to become a member of one of your hospital’s Shared Governance Committees. You may choose to
practice Skilled Communication or True Collaboration in your workplace. You may choose to lend a helping hand to
a co-worker or neighbor in need. You may choose to read a book or take a class. You may even decide to do all of
these things. No matter what you decide to DARE yourself to do please remember that you don’t need to look far or
wide to see an opportunity to grow, it may be closer to home than you think. If you have any questions, please con-

To the right you will see an image for Growing Power’s vision of a five-
story farm in the middle of the city. Growing Power is working towards
building this innovative conceptual design that will expand its green-
house and aquaponics operations currently spread over a two-acre site
located in the City of Milwaukee. This Farm will allow production of
plants, vegetables, and herbs year-round. Expanded educational class-
rooms, conference spaces, demonstration kitchen, food processing and
storage, freezers, and loading docks will further support Growing Power’s
expanding mission as a local and national resource for learning about
sustainable urban food production. Administrative offices, volunteer
spaces, and staff support areas will be closely connected to greenhouse
and educational areas to allow for active observation and participation.
As we move through the year GMAC members will have additional oppor-
tunities to get involved through volunteering and donations.
Growing Power’s Vision of a Vertical Farm— Angelina Kinter
Greater Milwaukee Area Chapter currently stands at 107. A review of the
national data base shows that forty of our members are CCRN, three are PCCN.
That is a forty percent certification rate, which is something worth
celebrating.
If you have not received your membership card, fear not. Membership cards
will be available for pick up at the next meeting. If you can't make the
meeting, have a friend pick up your card. Unclaimed cards will be mailed
after the November meeting. Bulk national membership drive continues through
the November meeting. It is a chance to save $9.

Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs) verses AACN
CNE Program Approval
In January 2010, the AACN Program Approval department adopted
the AACN Certification Corporation Synergy Continuing Education
Recognition Points (CERP) categories for the CNE contact hours
and CERPS for CCRN recertification. The categories are based on
the AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care: Category A- Clinical
Judgement, Clinical Inquiry; Category B-Advocacy& Moral Agency,
caring practices, Response to Diversity Facilitation of Learning;
Category C-Collaboration, Systems Thinking.
In order to provide CNE for programs the chapter must submit an
application which must meet all the prescribed AACN guidelines.
This application is associated with a cost and a significant amount
of work both for the chapter and the speakers.
The board members are discussing our education programs and
are considering offering a certificate of attendance and the associ-
ated CERPs. The state of Wisconsin does not require any CNE
hours for license renewal and CCRN certification accepts CERPs
for recertification. Although it is our pledge to maintain the quality
educational opportunities this would eliminate the application
process for CNEs to AACN. A survey will be placed on the website
under the “Education” tab after our November meeting. Please
share your opinion with us.
The nomination committee is accepting candidates to fill the positions of
President-Elect, Vice President-Elect, Treasurer, Treasurer-Elect, Secretary
and Member-at Large for fiscal year 2013-2014 (July-June). The Elect
positions are a two year commitment. During your elect year your will be
mentored in the responsibilities of the position. Then for 2013-2014 you
take on the full responsibilities while mentoring your successor. AACN
chapter service is a rewarding experience we hope you decide to pursue.
Member–at–Large is a one year commitment. The Chapter also supports
the unelected position of Board Learning Partner.
Attached with this newsletter and available on our Chapter website is the
nomination form. You can nominate yourself or another Chapter mem-
ber. If nominating someone else, the nominating committee will contact
that person to let them know they have been nominated and ask if they
are willing to serve. We will accept nominations by e-mail. All candidates
must sign the willingness to serve form to be entered on the ballot. All
candidates must be National AACN and Chapter members.
The Nomination committee will request some information from the candi-
dates to present on the ballot to the chapter membership. If you would like more details about the responsibili-
ties of the positions do not hesitate to contact the current officers. They can be contacted through the Chapter
website listed on this newsletter. Nomination must be received by January 31st.
The earlier, the better for the nomination committee and the candidates to prepare the information for the ballot.
Once the ballot is sent out, members have 14 days to vote. We hope to announce the selected candidates at the
February 13th general meeting. This is your opportunity to Dare to Dream, Act, Lead and Change. It all starts with
your single step.
Here is your financial standing at the end of the first quarter (Our fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30). If you are
keeping track, we have increased our reserves by over $7600. Our biggest income always occurs in the fall, be-
cause our membership renewal occurs in September and we sponsor the CCRN/PCCN Review in September. We
no longer can rely on returns on investments as the interest rates are exceedingly low.
Below are the primary sources of income and our biggest expenses for this quarter.

6:00-7:00 Caregivers and Moral Distress presented by Cheryl Anderson, MSN, MA-Bioethics, Clinical Ethicist
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. Cheryl received her BSN from UW-Oshkosh, MSN from Marquette University and
a MA in Bioethics from the Medical College of Wisconsin. She provides ethics consultation services to patients,
families, and staff. Her special areas of interest in ethics is palliative and end of life care, advanced directives,
refusal of treatment and caregivers moral distress. Moral Distress is experienced daily in our units and is a com-
plex process. Cheryl will discuss these issues and provide some strategies for coping in order to promote a
healthy work environment.
7:30-8:30 End of Life: A Cultural Perspective Panel Discussion. This presentation will be led by Teri Vega Strom-
berg, MSN, RN, AOCN, ACHPN, Clinical Nurse Specialist. Teri has over 30 years of nurs-
ing experience which is strongly routed in caring for oncology patients and patients at
the end of life. Teri will provide an overview of Palliative Care /Hospice Care and use in
critical care and discuss ICU Palliative Care “evidence based bundles”. Luz Ortiz is the
Director of Interpretation & Translation Services and has extensive experience with the
Hispanic community organization for programs that served all ages. Mia Yia Thao is a
medical interpreter that has over 15 years of experience working in the Hmong Commu-
nity as a Care worker, Outreach specialist, presenter, educator and legal and medical
interpreter. Gloria Singleton-Young is the Save a Life Coordinator and has extensive out-
reach experience with community and patient education within the African-American
culture. This panel discussion will provide information on common customs, beliefs and
practices related to health, illness and end of life.

GMAC is the local professional "home" for nurses in South-
eastern Wisconsin who work with patients who are acutely
or critically ill. With over 85,000 members, AACN is the
largest specialty nursing organization in the world, repre-
senting the interests of more than 500,000 nurses. The
association is dedicated to providing our members with the
knowledge and resources necessary to provide optimal
care to patients along the critical care continuum.
The goal of GMAC is to:
Uphold the American Association of Critical-Care
Nurses' vision, mission, and values at the local level.
Support nurses working in a variety of acute and criti-
cal care settings, whose patients require specialized knowl-
edge and skills to assure optimal outcomes. Our members
work in intensive care units, medical and surgical- teleme-
try units, interventional radiology, emergency departments,
on transport teams and are faculty at area colleges and
universities.
Support includes educational programs, networking
with professional colleagues, mentoring relationships and
scholarships.
Promote quality care of acutely and critically ill pa-
tients in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Keynote Speaker, Dave Hanson inspires………. We were privileged to have Dave Hanson (Past AACN President) as our Keynote Speaker. His inspirational message titled ‘Dare To Be….. Ex-traordinary’ challenged all of us to use our per-sonal and professional power to make the transi-tion from ‘ordinary’ to ‘extraordinary’. Using Susan Boyle’s UK Talent Show audition as an ex-ample, Dave shared his tips and suggestions that can enable us to inspire, lead, care, and Dare To face our fears. Thank-you Dave for sharing your personal story on how nurses can be ‘extraordinary’, and congratulations on your newly acquired certification (Dave just passed his Nursing Executive Advanced—Board Certifi-cation (NEA-BC) last week).

Sharing Best Practices…….. One of the goals of our Multi-Region Collabora-tive meeting was to network and share Chapter best practices. With many Chapters doing awe-some things, we asked the Greater Milwaukee Area Chapter (GMAC) to share some of their Best Practices that had enabled them to win TWO Circle of Excellence Chapter Best Practice Awards this year.
Kathy Epping (GMAC) shared with us an excel-lent presentation on ‘Planning a Chapter Col-laborative Event’, in which the GMAC collabo-rated with local nursing schools to host a nurs-ing student event.
Mary Jo Palmstein (GMAC) shared with us her tips for ‘Applying for a Chapter Circle of Excel-lence Award’. Thank-you to both Kathy and Mary Jo for shar-ing their insights. Their ‘take home’ message was to Dare all Chapters to apply for a Circle of Excellence Award—the deadline is 11/15/2012.
Other meeting activities included: The AACN 2012 Update, presented by Leslie Collins Small Group/Breakout Activities, related to the Circle of
Excellence Award categories, and planning a chapter event; coordinated by Stephen McKeeman

A HUGE thank-you goes out to our supporter—Sage Products, Inc. They generously provided us with
meeting space, morning coffee (what’s a nurse without our morning coffee..!!), and a fabulous lunch. In the afternoon, we had the privilege of a visit from Vince Foglia (Sage Company Founder and CEO), who took questions from our partici-pants about Sage products, and improvement suggestions..!
Without any knowledge of Dave’s keynote pres-entation, Vince stated that Sage’s goal was to develop “simple inter-ventions that resulted in extraordinary patient outcomes”, and that he is “proud to be associ-ated with nurses and the AACN”.
Sage also provided us with a tour of their manu-facturing facilities.
