St. Paul’s Rector Search Moves Forward

by the Rev. Don GoodheartInterim Rector

I AM the Resurrection.—John 11:25

Easter involves the very identity of Jesus Christ. Our whole faith hinges on the resurrection; St. Paul says in First Corinthians 15:14, “if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain.”

So as I say Happy Easter to you all, I urge you to express your faith in worship. Starting with Palm Sunday we have the climax of Lent, the rich heritage of Holy Week, ending with the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services, providing the important background for Easter. As I said in a recent sermon, “There

is no resurrection without death and there is no Easter without Lent.” Finally, we will celebrate the resurrection at the Easter Vigil on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and at three morning festal services at 7:00, 9:00 and 11:15, as well as the 5:00 evening Eucharist. I know they will be celebrations full of Christian joy. Joy, after all, is the birthright of the Christian.

As a footnote, I will be celebrating the Resurrection in the middle of the China Sea, leading worship on a ship called the Crystal Symphony—a previous commitment that I had before coming back to St. Paul’s. I will miss being with you all, but I will return before the visit of Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple in May for confirmations. In the meantime, may you truly have a joyous Easter!

Volume 42, Number 4. News for the Parish of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church April 2014

The search for the next Rector of St. Paul’s began in earnest with the series of meetings that Canon Michael Hunn held with parishioners, staff members and the Vestry.

At the Vestry Retreat on February 22, the Vestry began formulating the Parish Profile with the assistance of Kay Lord, who acted as facilitator and had done considerable work collating the parishioners’ responses. Invited guests included members of the search committees from the last two Rector searches, giving the Vestry insight and suggestions based on experience.

The process of writing the Parish Profile continued for the next month, based on the answers to questions that came from the meetings with Canon Hunn, the online survey that went out to all parishioners on our email mailing lists and handwritten responses from some members. Elizabeth Allen gave considerable time in helping to compose the first draft of the profile.

The Vestry had a three-hour meeting with Canon Hunn and Catherine Massey, Deputy Transition Officer for the

diocese, following the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. The two of them walked the Vestry through the whole search process and answered many questions about it. Some of the questions concerned how the diocese finds candidates, how background checks are done, and how many candidates the Vestry actually wants to interview.

The finalized profile was sent to the diocese on March 14, with some additions on March 17. The next step will be Canon Hunn’s presenting that profile to transition officers from other dioceses around the country at meetings he will be attending in March and April. Also, the profile has been posted online for candidates to consider, along with an invitation to them to submit an initial application.

If parishioners know of qualified candidates for the Rector position at St. Paul’s, they should encourage them to visit the job openings page on the diocesan web site and submit an application. Interested parishioners may access the profile through the diocesan site or from the home page of the St. Paul’s web site at www.stpauls-ws.org.

Reflections on Holy Week and Easter

St. Paul’s Senior Adults Committee’s recent Brunswick stew sale made possible a $2,130 donation to the Meals on Wheels program of Senior Services. Kay Donahue and others from the committee prepared the stew.

At the March 9 Stop Hunger Now event, parishioners assembled 10,000 packages, each containing enough rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables to feed six people in impoverished areas around the world. Parishioners help pay for the packaged food with their contributions to mite boxes throughout the 40 days of Lent.

St. Paul’s 60th Annual White Elephant Sale and our Pancake Supper were held on Shrove Tuesday. The sale, chaired by Linda Hill for the past 26 years, brought in more than $2,500 to support youth-oriented organizations. The supper, organized by the Youth Ministry, with food preparation by the Men’s Ministry, grossed $1,230, with profits to go to support St. Paul’s Youth Ministry mission trips this summer. St. Paul’s clergy donned chef ’s hats and took a turn at the griddle as well.

The Men’s Ministry’s Skeet Shooting and Wing Eating Gala on March 1 got off to a great start. We had 20 men of all ages and skill levels enjoying the chance to blast some skeet from the sky while getting to know one another at the same time. We kept the fellowship going as we descended on Ronnie’s Wings and proceeded to eat them out of house and home! We are already looking forward to the second annual event. In the meantime, we will be planning other Men’s Ministry outings soon.

Parishioners are invited to help launch Community Gatherings—a new ministry at St. Paul’s! Community Gatherings evolved from the work of several sub-committees of the Long-Range Vision Implementation Committee, including Formation, Inclusion and Outreach. The purpose of our ministry is to offer intergenerational fellowship for parishioners with families served through our outreach ministries.

As a natural complement to this year’s Lenten focus on

food and faith, each gathering will feature a shared meal and the opportunity for our parishioners to meet and build relationships and community with the children and families our outreach programs serve.

Our first gathering will be held on Sunday, April 27, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. under the covered parking area near the west entrance, with Colhoun as a backup in case of rain. We will be serving dinner to parishioners and Kids’ Café children and their families, who live primarily in the Weatherwood neighborhood. The evening will include live music, authentic Mexican food catered by Señor Bravo and activities for children. event and help us extend a warm welcome to the Kids’ Café families. Let us know you plan to attend by contacting our Church Receptionist Peggy Slater at [email protected] or 723-4391, ext. 1201.

For more information about how you can support and participate in the Community Gatherings ministry, please contact Grace Broughton at [email protected].

This summer, the Community Gatherings Committee will sponsor a second event—a covered-dish luncheon with Summer Enrichment children and their families—where we will continue to strengthen relationships with friends in Weatherwood and get to know families in the Thurmond Street neighborhood. We hope the St. Paul’s family will turn out for this inaugural

Under the leadership of co-chairs Liz and Stan Kelly, St. Paul’s concluded its 2014 Transforming Lives annual giving campaign with 584 pledges totaling $1,942,087. The pledge total is the largest in the history of St. Paul’s and amounts to 96 percent of the campaign goal of $2,025,000.

“We’re all very grateful to the Kellys, our Vestry and most of all, to the parishioners who pledged to this year’s campaign,” said Stewardship Director Nancy Grantham. “Because of all of them, lives truly are being transformed this year through the ministries of St. Paul’s.”
