July 13, 2014 Lucky Me

President Dodjie and I have just attended last night League of Visionary Handover Ceremony at Valley Verde 6 Clubhouse. PP Vincent Santos turnover the Prime Minister position to PP Nonong Soto of RC Pasig. The League of Visionary is the most inimitable group of past presi-dent in District 3800 under the leadership of PDG Rudy San Felipe. It is unique because after almost four or five years since it was organized after Rotary year 2009 – 2010 it never cease to be organized with regular activities like this turnover ceremonies, regular meetings and harmo-nious happy fellowship. They are as cohesive as a group as they were during their incumbency that even District Governor Marilou Co was so envious. She was planning to invite PDG Rudy to a dinner just to query him about his secret why his visionary presidents were so united, or-ganized, and cohesive.

It was during incumbency of PP Vincent Santos when I decided to join again our club after sev-eral years of hiatus. It was also during that Rotary year that we had opportunity to worked to-gether when typhoon Ondoy hit Marikina. We did joint medical mission and relief operations. There was one time Arlene and were invited to dance during the Governors Visit. That was the time I really missed being a Rotarian so when PP Vincent invited me to join again the club, I never had second thought because I know I was very happy to be Rotarian.

The Visionary Presidents with PDG Rudy San Felipe were very dear to my heart. It was during their time when I rejoined Rotary and tonight I was very lucky to have attended the handover, I won a Mountain Bike during the first draw of the raffle by PP Vincent Santos. What a struck of luck.

President Dodjie Cabalquinto were together with PDG Efren de Guzman, SAG Roland Garcia, PP Dante Verano, AG Ronie Masangkay, Dir. Manny Pecho, Spouses Eula Santos, Noemi Verano, Vicky Smith and Vicky Pecho. Spouse Eula Santos was drawn as second lucky winner of a Mountain Bike but generously waved this off.

That same night we were able also to attend the 7th charter anniversary and Handover Cere-mony of Rotary of San Mateo at Mossaiko near Eastwood together with SAG Roland Garcia. AG Ronie Masangkay.

Tonight, as we celebrate our Zone 4 joint Handover Ceremony, I am praying that my luck will be extended during its raffle part. I hope the event will proceed with no hitches or snags or problems. I also hope speeches will be brief and flow of the program will be smooth.

ROTARY THEME NECKTIE/SCARF and BLAZER

RI presidents introduced theme logos, lapel pins, ties, and scarves. Theme ties were introduced in the 1990s, and are now given out yearly. Many have incorporated the theme for the year. The first scarves showing the RI theme were de-signed by 1998-99 RI President James L. Lacy and his wife, Claudine, Follow Your Rotary Dream.

The theme blazers started in 1984-85, when Carlos Canseco was the RI presi-dent, and the governor in my district that year, Jim Fischer, was instrumental in starting and maintaining the tradition. Jim and his brother owned a sporting goods store in the St. Louis area, and when his classmates expressed an interest in acquiring some brightly colored jackets to identify one another at Rotary con-ventions, Jim secured a large number of bright yellow blazers for his fellow gover-nors. The yellow jackets — or the Jell-O jackets, as they were frequently called — were an instant success, and they were highly visible at the 1985 Rotary con-vention in Kansas City. The jackets were so popular that the 1986-87 RI presi-dent, M.A.T. Caparas, asked Jim to provide a supply of Harvard crimson-colored blazers for sale at the 1986 International Assembly in Nashville. The blazers were a big hit, and as the succeeding presidents selected their colors from year to year, Jim provided the blazers for many years. (from the speech of then RIPE Ray Klinginsmith during the 2010 International Assembly)

BASICS OF PHOTOGRAPHY: THE COMPLETE GUIDE continuation

The Lens Certain types of lenses are better for certain situations, so it's important to know their classifications and differences. The first thing worth noting is the difference between zoom lenses and prime lenses. Zoom lenses—as you can probably guess—let you zoom in and out. While they have that advantage, they're generally more expensive, heavier, and larger. Prime lenses, on the other hand, do not allow you to zoom, but they're often cheaper, lighter, and smaller. In many cases, prime lenses will provide sharper images than zoom lenses at lower price points. When you start paying thousands of dollars for lenses, lens performance tends to be a little more equal.

The next thing you want to understand is the difference between wide-angle, standard, medium, telephoto, and ultra telephoto lenses. These terms are all based on a lens' focal length, which is a complex definition that's beyond the scope of this lesson (if curiosity compels you, read about it on Wikipedia). What you need to know is that focal length is measured in millimeters (mm) and you can think of it like the amount of magnification. A low number is like being zoomed really far out, and a high number really far in. Here's what you need to know about each type: Wide-angle lenses are essentially any lenses with a focal length of up to 35mm. The wider the lens (and lower the focal length), the more the lens can see. Fisheye lenses are extremely wide and often have a rating of around 8-10mm. A regular wide-angle lens is generally around 14-28mm. As you can see from the photo on the left, wide angle lenses capture more stuff in the frame. They also distort space, increasing depth and making it look more spherical. This can be both a wanted and unwanted effect, depending on the circumstances. Some wide-angle lenses include technology that corrects this distortion, but those lenses are almost always significantly more expensive. EXPAND Standard lenses are generally between 35-50mm and tend to most closely represent space the way the human eye sees it. Wide-angle lenses tend to distort space and add the appearance of more depth. Telephoto lenses flatten space. Standard lenses are the middle ground and produce images that look realistic to most people. A 50mm prime lens is often the cheapest lens you can buy with a level of quality that rivals zoom lenses priced at several hundred dollars more. Standards are the most versatile lenses because they're a good compromise between the more extreme types, but they're often useless when you're in a small space and need to go wide or are far away from your subject and need the magnification power of a telephoto. continued on page 11…..

Medium lenses generally fall into the range of 60-100mm and are generally not a type you'll want as a prime unless you have a specific purpose in mind (some prefer 60mm and 85mm prime lenses for portraits, for example). This range is often encompassed by zoom lenses, and that's generally where you'll want it. Many standard zoom lenses start as wide as 28mm and end up at 70mm, at least. A good standard zoom will encompass this range. EXPAND Telephoto lenses are what you want for zooming in really far. Pretty much anything over 100mm is considered a telephoto lens, and anything over 400mm is considered an ultra telephoto lens. While telephoto lenses can magnify an image many times over, and are necessary when you can't get close to your subject, they're both heavy, are more subject to motion blur (as a result of camera movement), and do not perform as well in low light. You will find some options that are compact, come with image stabilization (to prevent motion blur), and offer wider apertures (to perform better in low light), but all of these features increase their cost significantly.

IN ROTARY FOUNDATION: Wewill support the TRF with the best of our abilities.

And Last but not the least,

INPUBLIC IMAGE: To commemorate the 50th year of Rotary in Zone 4, We areto put up a Ro-tary Marker with ourHistory, and names of all the Rotarians of zone 4. The lead Club is the Mother Club. RC Marikina. Hopefully, this will be at the vicinity of the MeralcoPark, Industrial-Valley Compound (IVC). This will serve not just as a public image but as a symbol of our com-mitment to serve our community above self. This Public Image Project will need the support and cooperation of each and every Rotarians of our Zone.

Thank you and GOD BLESS US ALL!
