On 9 July 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jim Cross, Associate Dean (International), the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science, Edith Cowan University, Australia paid an academic visit to Walailak University. The objective of the visit was to fol- low up the collaboration areas that were discussed during an official visit by WU administrators to Edith Cowan University in March 2015 and seeking for new feasible areas of collaboration. The possibility of collaborations could be establishing research links, sending some of nursing staff to ECU to undertake PhD study, proposing to send a group of staff to ECU for short term professional development (Nursing), delivery of family and community medi- cine program and research with ECU (Medical Science), ECU visiting students for a short term study tour in 2016 focusing on OT students and sending a group of students to ECU for a study tour, furthering PhD study by WU faculty member in Exercise Biomechanics at ECU (Allied Health Sci- ence), establishing a research link with ECU in eHealth (Informatics), short term student visit for work placement, cultural and tourism, sending staff and student for PhD study and research in Accounting and Tourism (Management), and exploring the opportunity to establish a Joint Doctoral program for a small number of stu- dents who would meet the ECU entry requirements (Informatics). School of Management discussed with UUM for seeking collaborations

On 19 August 2015, a delegation from School of Econom-ics, Finance and Banking, Universiti Utara Malaysia visited Walailak University to explore the opportunities to establish collaboration in the field of management between UUM and WU. The visiting group consisted of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sal-lahuddin Hassan, Head, Department of Economics and Agribusiness, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lim Hock Eam, Coordinator,

Postgraduate Studies, Mr. Lai Tian So, Senior Lecturer and Mr. Chumphon Kaewsom, UUM Ph.D. Student and coordinator. On this occasion, Dr. Rungrawee Jitpakdee, As-sociate Dean of School of Management, Dr. Jintanee Ru-zhe, Dr. Pairote Nualnoom, and Dr. Pankeawta Lakkanawanit, WMS faculty members were representatives of Walailak University to welcome and discuss with UUM for collaborations. The possi-bilities derived from the discussion could be visiting professor project in the field of interest, joint international conference in economics, student short visit with taking sit-in lecture in some subject at UUM, and a tailor-made language course at UUM.

The 17th IMT - GT Varsity Council Carnival

Dr. Lertchai Sirichai, Acting Vice-President for Research and Community Network, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aswin Promsopa, Acting Assistant to the President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Piyawat Kong-intr, Director of the Division

of Student Affairs, Mr. Nantapong Milaehman, Director of Sport and Health Center, and WU students participated in the 17th IMT-GT Varsity Carnival at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) during 18-24 August 2015. The opening ceremony was organ-ized on 19 August 2015 presiding over by Prof. Dato’Wira Dr. Mahamed Mustafa Bin Ishak ,Vice Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Adnan Bin Hussein , President of IMT-GT Varsity Council, and Dato’ Seri Haji Mukhriz Tun Manhathir ,Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of the State of Kedah Darul Aman. The festive event was attended by over 1,000 participants from the 12 universities joining the carnival. The 17th IMT - GT Varsity Council Carnival is a form of cooperation involving three coun-tries, namely Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand in the fields of

sports, cultural and academic seminars to strengthen relationship among students and staff of the three countries through academic seminar, sports and cultural activities. Malaysia will be represented by four public universities namely Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNiMAP), Southern Thailand will be represented by students from Prince of Songkla Uni-versity (PSU), Thaksin University (TSU), Rajamangala Technology of Technology Srivijaya (RMTSV) and Walailak University (WU). And representing Sumatra will be students from North Sumatra University (USU), State University of Medan (UNIMEDAN), Uni-versity of North Sumatra (UMSU) and Medan Institute of Technology (ITM).

The activities of the carnival this year consisted of cultural per-formances under the theme “Exploring ASEAN Culture Through the Folktale Dance Drama”, academic seminar on “Diversity and ASEAN Po-litical Perspective”, and sports competition e.g. football, volleyball, tennis, badminton, footsal and Pencak Silat.

Work-Based Learning Campus at Malaysian Hospitality College and Malay-Singapore Field Trip

On 11 July 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aswin Promsopa, Acting Assistant to the President for Academic Affairs, Ajarn Sak-chai Pinpetch, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Management and Ajarn Sun-thorn Boonkaew, Chair of the Discipline of Tourism Industry and Hospitality, School of Management participated in the opening ceremony of Work-Based Learn-ing Campus at Malaysian Hospitality Col-lege (MH), Mines Resort City, Kuala Lum-pur, Malaysia. WU representatives were warmly welcomed by Professor Dr. Wong Kong Yew, President of MH Col-lege. On this occasion, the MH College presented Certificate of Attendance of “Learning English as First Language (LEFL)” to 78 WU first year students ma-joring in Tourism Industry and Hospitality and 28 second year students majoring in

Economics who previously joined WMS In-Country Project during 27 April-21 July 2015 at MH College. The Work-Based Learning Campus event was co-organized by students of MH College, WU students who participated in WMS In-Country Project at MH College, and students of Mahasarakham University. WU students took part in planning the event activities by preparing Thai food stalls, Thai traditional massage, fruit and vegetable carving, temple festival activities and Thai dances (performances on stage). Audiences of the event were entertained, admired Thainess and the students’ ability to render the Thai Hospitality. During 13-16 July 2014, WU School of Management organized field trip activity which was a part of TOI-311 ASEAN Tourism subject under the supervision of Ajarn Sunthorn Boonkaew. The field trip was took place in Singapore. The students were divided into 9 groups. They had to plan their own trips to visit famous tourist spots in Singapore e.g. Sentosa, Marina Bay, China Town, Orchard, and Little India by using Singapore public transport services. While taking the trips, the students had to analyze and compare infra-structure for tourist and tourism management of tourist attractions, services, tourists’ behavior, effect of tourism to economy, interaction and participation of people and tourists in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The objective of this subject is to enhance students’ experiences, provide understanding and open their global outlook in ASEAN tourism and hospitality.

On 24 August 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aswin Promsopa, Acting Assistant to the Presi-dent for Academic Affairs presided over the opening ceremony of “WU-UPM Debate Train-ing, Competition and Public Speaking 2015” at Tumpang Meeting Room, 3 Fl. Administration Building, Walailak University.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurdeng Deuraseh from Faculty of Human Ecology, Dr. Mohd Mahadee Bin Ismail, Senior Lecturer from Universiti Putra Malaysia, Asst. Prof. Dr. Anchalee Chayanuvat, a senior lecturer, School of Liberal Arts, and Ajarn Abdul-

roya Panaemalae, Chair of the Discipline of Southeast Asian Studies, School of Liberal Arts. More than 80 students including Malaysian, Indonesian, and WU students attended the opening ceremony.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aswin Promsopa mentioned in his opening speech that WU and UPM share the same reali-zation that with the emergence of the ASEAN Community. As graduate providers, there is an urgent need for the development of our students in terms of communication skills, which means the ability to communi-cate effectively, and thus is willing to host this event with contributions from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He thanked all participants, organizers and particularly Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurdeng Deuraseh from Universiti Putra Malaysia and International Relations Office, Walailak University for this valuable cooperation, which provides us with a good opportunity to engage in the regional networking activities.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurdeng Deuraseh expressed his thankfulness to Walailak University for hosting and orga-nizing the today’s debate training program as he believed that one of important skills of leaders is debating skill. He and his team also presented a lecture on What is Debating? to provide a clear understanding of de-bating rules. Then, Prof. Dr. Anchalee Chayanuvat explained more about Debating and Debate Scoring Ru-bric.

Since the signing of MOU, Walailak University and Universiti Putra Malaysia have expanded cooperation con-tinuously in various activities, such as the student exchange; the visiting professor project; the campus tour & study program, as well as today’s Debate Training, Competition and Public Speaking which was a second de-bating activity between WU and UPM.

On 7 July 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aswin Promsopa, Acting Assistant to the Presi-dent for Academic Affairs gave a warm welcome to a group of 11 internship students from Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Philippines led by Dr. Oliver F. Celestino, CLSU lec-turer. Also present to welcome the CLSU student s were Asst. Prof. Dr. Padungsak Suksa-ard, Director of the Center for Co-operative Education and Ca-reer Development, Asst. Prof. Dr. Suwit Wuthisuthimethavee,

Dean of School of Agricultural Technology, Asst. Prof. Dr. Noppawan Chimsung, Associate Dean of School of Agricultural Technology, Asst. Prof. Dr. Piyapong Chotipun, and Asst. Prof. Dr. China Supakorn, lecturers of School of Agricultural Technology. The objective of the visit was to attend an On-the-Job Training Pro-gram in the fields of Dairy Production and Swine Production at Walailak University from 6-26 July 2015 un-der the supervision of School of Agricultural Technology.

On 7 August 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aswin Prom-sopa, Acting Assistant to the President for Academic Affairs gave a warm welcome to three groups of international student from Indonesia, Bangladesh and China. The first group is scholar-ship grantees under the WU In-ternational Graduate Studies Scholarship Program who enroll to study Master’s degree pro-grams in academic year 1/2015 at Walailak University namely 1) Mr. Naymul Karim (Bangladesh), Biomedical Sciences, 2) Mr. Rana Dhar (Bangladesh), Biomedical Sciences, 3) Mr. Rifqi Ferdian (Indonesia), English, and 4) Miss Perti Rosanda (Indonesia), English. The second group is six students from University of Bengkulu, Indonesia came to Walailak University for attending a two-months cultural exchange program under the supervision of Regional Studies Program, School of Liberal Arts. A student from Peking University, PR. China—Mr. Zhou Ge is an Internship Student under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Chatchai Kanlayanapaphon, Director of the Cen-ter for Scientific and Technological Equipment. On this occasion, WU International Relations Office arranged a general orientation on cultural awareness, visa matters and health issues as well as Thai language class for international students.

On 13 August 2015, Ajarn Abdulroya Panaemalae, Director of Islamic Studies and Muslim Community. Devel-opment for Peaceful Social Integration Project: ISWU gave a warm welcome to 15 students from Universiti Putra Malay-sia (UPM). The UPM students visited Walailak University under the project “UPM-WU ASEAN YOUTH CAMP 2015. The ISWU provided several activities to provide some cul-tural experiences for the students such as learning ways of life by staying with host families in Ban Na Tab and Ban Bang Tong communities, visit local communities to observe fish-

ery, making curry paste, and mangrove planting etc.

On 10 September 2015, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nibondh Tipsrinimit, Associate Dean and faculty members of ASEAN Studies Program, School of Liberal Arts, gave a warm welcome to lecturers and ex-change students from State University of Malang, Indonesia at Meet-ing Room 1, Academic Building 1, School of Liberal Arts. The group of seven exchange students led by two lectur-ers—Dr. Gatut Susanto MM., M.Pd. and Dr. Widodo Hs. M. Pd.,. During their stay as exchange students to attend Indonesian Teaching Practicum Program from 8 September to 15 October 2015 at Walailak University, they will be under the supervision of Ajarn Pensri Panich, a lecturer of the ASEAN Studies Program.
