As property-related crimes in the TableView precinct continue to stabilise, as-sault cases and robberies have sparked

concern among police.Speaking toTygerBurger ahead of the annu-

al release of national crime statistics, TableView police station commander Colonel DirkVosloo says serious crimes including houserobberies are on a downward spiral. He says during August officers experienced

problems with robberies in the area borderedby Gie Road, Raats Drive, Blaauwberg Roadand Wood Drive.“This whole corridor in Sector 2 is a prob-

lematic area for house break-ins, robberiesand theft out of motor vehicles. If you look atthe geographical location, you can see wehave an influx of people walking throughthese streets in search of jobs and so on.”Vosloo also highlighted robberies along

Parklands Main Road and says teenagers us-ing their cellphones while walking in thestreet or waiting for the bus have become thelatest target. He says an analysis of robberiesreveals they take place along MyCiTi routes.“You see children with their earphones

plugged into the phones and either walking toa bus stop or waiting for a bus. They assumethose standing at the bus stop are commutersand the next moment some guy grabs yourphone and runs away.Wewould like to appealto all commuters to ensure their valuables arenot visible,” he says.Vosloo says while two men believed to be

behind the robberies have been arrested, po-lice are investigating the matter further. The commander also highlighted recent

robberies along Potsdam Road. Looking at as-sault cases, Vosloo says the incidents arewidespread across the precinct while mostcases appear to stem from domestic violence.Tomorrow (Thursday) Table View police

will be embarking on their education cam-paign with a public meeting in Site 5.In another case a man entered a store in

West Beach and held up an employee beforeemptying the safe. According to a statementby police spokesperson Lieutenant AdrianaChandler, themanwalked into an office with-out beingnoticed by tellers andheld up an em-ployee with a firearm.“The man walked out of the store and got

into a blue Volkswagen Polo waiting outsidewith another accomplice.“The suspect was wearing a blue cap and

blue jeans,” she saysV Anyone with information is asked to contact thecrime line number on 08600 10111 or Table View PoliceStation on 021 521 3300.

Write it the right way: The WesternCape branch of the Forum of Community

Journalists (FCJ) presented its annualregional seminar at the Bon Hotel Shelly

Point on the West Coast last week. About50 community journalists from across the

Western Cape attended this trainingseminar. The speakers included veterannews photographer Sharief Jaffer who

shared his knowledge of taking prize-win-ning pictures, veteran newspaperman Tom

Ferreira (pictured) who spoke on how towrite winning headlines, and GeorgeClaassen, ombudsman of Media24’s

community newspapers. Journalists alsohad the opportunity to network with eachother and share ideas about the industry.

The installation of a fence around the Blaa-uwberg Nature Reserve (BNR) is progress-ing and according to the City of Cape Townit could see the introduction of various ani-mals including eland, red hartebeest andgrey rhebok.According to a statement, BNR has be-

come a popular multi-use area where resi-dents can enjoy recreational activities in aspectacular setting.

The reserve features picnic sites, braaiareas, hiking trails, historic buildings, surf-ing, windsurfing, bird watching, whalewatching and overnight accommodation. As such, the envisaged introduction of

game to the reserve aims to bolster the visi-tor experience and increase the biodiversi-ty footprint. The fencing project was funded by the De-

partment of EnvironmentalAffairs through

the Expanded Public Works Programme atan estimated cost of R8m.It is considered a ‘developing reserve’ and

currently the publically owned land is 1 445ha in extent. The City says this constitutes a very large

nature reserve and could in fact allow forthe reintroduction of large mammals suchas eland, red hartebeest and grey rhebok. This will have to be done in terms of the Na-ture Reserve Faunal Management Plan.Among Blaauwberg Nature Reserve’s

treasures is Montispectus, which has of-fered cost-effective self-catering accommo-dation to the public since it opened in 2012.The name derives from the Bloubergstranddwarf burrowing skink (Scelotes monti-spectus) that was first discovered in the re-serve in 2002. The animalwas appropriatelynamed Montispectus meaning ’to beholdthe mountain’.The self-catering unit, which is a renovat-

ed World War II officer’s mess building, sleeps up to four guests in an open plan bed-room with two single beds and a doublebunk bed.For informationabout thenature reserve,

call 021 444 0454 or email to [email protected] for Montispectus can be made

through the nature reserve office or viae-mail to [email protected].

Discussions around fireworks inWard23 are expected to be tabled again thisweek, following a new report to the

Blaauwberg Subcouncil. In recent weeks a decision to recommend

the TableViewbeachfront as a suitable sitefor the discharge of fireworks on GuyFawkes and New Years days has come un-der scrutiny.Ward 23 committeemembers have tabled

the issue in two recentmeetingswith coun-cillor Nora Grose. In the most recent meeting called by

Grose in August, the councillor requestedproposedalternative sites and said an earli-er document presented to the committeewas outdated.

The document, known as E4996, includesthe City of Cape Town’s criteria for deter-mining a suitable site.

At the previouswardmeeting,Grose saidthe criteria in this document was not listedin the by-laws.Following thismeeting, residentMervyn

Winter approached various City officialsrequesting an urgent explanation on thematter.

According to the document, a suitablefireworks site needs to be at least 100 me-tres from buildings and vehicles must beparked at least 100 metres from the firingpoint.

Residents claim the location at the beach-front opposite the tourism office falls farshort of several criteria and thereforeshould never have been listed as a suitablesite.

Responding to questions posed by theTygerBurger, City chief fire officer IanSchnetler confirms the criteria is still ap-plicable.

He says the Table View beachfrontstretches for some distance and there areportions of the beachfront that do complywith the necessary requirements.

Schnetler says he is not aware of thecounter-proposals, however, and if theycomply with the criteria they will be con-sidered.

Among some of the counter proposals bythe ward committee are theMilnerton Flea

Market and Theo Marais Park.Schnetler says the flea market could be a

viable alternative but its proximity to an in-dustrial area may impact on its suitability asa preferred site.Asked whether or not Ward 23 has to have

a fireworks site, he said: “The general ideais that more sites are made available to re-duce the congestionat the current eight desig-nated sites around the city and therefore thesubcouncils and wards should consider anumber of alternative sites.

The new report, which appears on the Blaa-uwbergSubcouncilmeeting agenda to beheldin the council chambers on Thursday, is a re-view of the current sites. It lists Table View as the suitable alterna-

tive site to Theo Marais Park, which is theformer site.

The report also outlines incidents at TheoMarais Park during fireworks, including aman who sustained lacerations to his face, two adult males with burn wounds, one adultmalewitha “needle stick injury”andanadultfemale with an ankle wound.

During the monthly Table View Ratepay-ers’ Association (TVRA) meeting on Monday7 September, members once again votedagainst fireworks on the beachfront andasked ward committee members to relay thismessage to the Ward 23 committee.Asked whether fireworks will be allowed

along the beachfront this November, Schnet-ler says at this time, fireworks are not bannedand thereforewhere sites have been designat-ed and where the necessary permits havebeen provided, it will go ahead.

“Onemust also take into account that thereare essentially only three days a year whenfireworks are used for celebrations.

MAGRIET THERON@magrietron

VermoorHaar man is vermoor. Kort daarna is haar

Intussen was sy herhaaldelik in reha-bilitasiesentrums.

“’n Mens leer baie daar; ’n mens kry soveeltools. Dis regtig iets verskrikliks.”

Kinders“Teen hierdie tyd wou my kinders niks

Ekwas so te sê dood.”

“Ongelukkig moes ek eers rockbottomstri-ke voor ek kon terugkom.”

MONIQUE DUVAL@monique_duval

Two men accused of being behind astring of robberies in Parklands ap-peared in court last week following a

dramatic car chase through the streets ofTable View and Dunoon.According to a report fromTableViewpo-

lice, officers responded to a call from Com-plex Patrol officers shortly after 12:00 onTuesday 8 September about a suspicious ve-hicle fitting the description of a car used inrobberies during August and September.Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adriana

Chandler says the men were driving a blueChevy Spark and started to speed up whenthey realised they were being followed.“A chase between police, security compa-

nies and the suspects ensued downPotsdamRoad. Officers instructed the driver of thevehicle to stop and surrender. The driver

stopped the vehicle. Officers approachedthe vehicle with caution and the occupantswere instructed to exit the vehicle, whichthey complied with,” she says.Chandler explains the two men fit the de-

scription of the suspects in the robberies, which included armed robberies.“The men were arrested and the vehicle

was searched. Traffic fines were found inthe vehicle, one of which was issued for an-other vehicle, which also fits the descrip-tion of a vehicle used in robberies in the ar-ea. The matter is being investigated,” shesays. The two men aged 30 and 29 are foreign

nationals and have been detained. Stationcommander Colonel DirkVosloo applaudedthe efforts of officers, security companiesand other role players. At this stage, he ex-plains, themen have not been linked to rob-beries which included the use of the secondvehicle.

for humans.“It is easy to think that our actions on land

do not affect the oceans, but the exact oppo-site is true. According to Ocean Conservan-cy, between 5 and 12 million tons of plasticenter the ocean annually due to land-basedactivities” says Renée Leeuwner of the Two

Oceans Aquarium. Not only is marine litter unsightly, but it

also poses a danger to marine life.“During our rehabilitation work with en-

dangered sea turtles we have found plasticpieces, bits of balloons and pieces of plasticbags in the gastro-intestinal tracts, bladdersand body cavities of hatchlings, sub-adultsand adults,” said Leeuwner. The clean-up crew will meet at Oppiesee

There is less than onemonth to go beforethose who have dedicated their lives tocare for the homeless, will be having

their third annual fun race.A large contingent of the city’s social wel-

fare organisations will be gathered on Sat-urday 10 October to kick-start their com-bined Amazing GRace (sic) event.Based on the popular television series,

participants of the event – an initiative byKraaifontein organisationHewLinCompas-sion – will see 20 teams of five people com-pete to get across the finishing line first, butonly after having completed all the obstaclecourses along their way, including one verysurprising yet endearing pitstop before thelast obstacle.

Planning completedOrganiser and HewLin Compassion

chairperson Hewitt de Jager, says most ofthe planning for the event is completed.“The event is quite similar to the actual

TV show, yet different in our intentions andefforts,” he says.“Contestants travel from one organisa-

tion to the other in an attempt to completeobstacles, or to render a service, whetherpainting the walls, processing foods, clean-ing premises or just selling food coupons inthe street to collect money for charities,”

Hewitt says.In short, organisations from the northern

or southern suburbs can state their needandprovide thematerials, then the racepar-ticipants will provide the manpower astheir travels take them to the next task thatneeds completion or service that needs to berendered.

Race from north to southThis year, the race will start in the north-

ern suburbs and wind its way to the south.Entry is charged at R80 per person orR400

per team, and all proceeds are used in theupliftment programmes of earmarked bene-ficiaries.The race is also educational, as the clues

for the teams will be arranged to be foundnear popular landmarks in the towns theywill visit to focus the attention on its histo-ry.Anyone can enter, and the event is partic-

ularly popular with families, but due to thephyscial activities is not suited for veryyoung children.“Space is limited, so register a teamnow,”

City workers on quad bikes will be acommon sight on road edges acrossCape Town over the next five to eight

weeks, as they embark on the first weedspraying programme for the current finan-cial year.“Weed spraying is essential in maintai-ning the city’s sidewalks and road infra-structure as the weeds grow onto the roadsurface, breaking up the seals and asphalt. The majority of potholes form when waterpenetrates the asphalt due to the crackingof the road’s asphalt surfacing.Weed spray-ing is part of our preventativemaintenanceprogramme and saves the City a significantamount in costly repair work,’ said the Ci-ty’smaycomember for transport, BrettHer-ron.The weed spraying will take place acrosseight districts as from this week until mid-October, weather permitting. Spraying isonly allowed in winds of up to 25 km/h andthe weeds must not be exposed to water orrain for at least eight hours after sprayingin order for the herbicide to be effective.“A hot day with little or no wind is idealfor weed spraying. Given Cape Town’s un-predictable weather, it takes some juggling

in assigning the spraying teams to areaswhere the wind is not too strong or wherewe are certain not to have rain shortly the-reafter. The spraying along the edges of ro-ads ismostly donewith quadbikes equippedwith a tank and pump. In some instanceswhere vehicles cannot be used or in bio-sen-sitive areas, spraying is done by hand usingknapsack sprayers,” said Herron. The teams will be targeting weeds andgrass growing along the edges of the roads,on footways or within the road reserve. Ac-cording to Herron, weed spraying is themost effective way of getting rid of theplants as it eradicates the weed at its roots, whereas machinery used for cutting grasswould damage the road infrastructure anddoes not kill the weeds. He added that ad hoc inspections will bedone to ensure that the contractors complywith the City’s regulations the City’s trans-port authority also receives a GPS printoutof the areas that have been sprayed. Thecontractors must train their employees inthe use of herbicides and are obliged to pro-vide themwithprotective gear, as is stipula-ted by the Occupational Health and SafetyAct.

There are regular fatalitiesreported on the N7. The factsin simple terms are:1. The N7 is a highway.2. Numerous pedestrians

wilfully take their life in theirown hands by crossing the N7.3. The envisaged pedestrian

bridge will not end deaths orinjuries as pedestrians willstill continue to cross thehighway as they please.4. Fencing of any sort will

not curtail people from cross-ing the highway as it will bemutilated, just as it has beenon the N2.5. Speeding is blamed, yet

the Road Ordinance is emphat-ically clear with regards topedestrians and cyclists. In anycase, the first road fatalityrecorded was not from aspeeding vehicle.6. Can any reader refer me

to any highway where pedestri-ans are law-abiding, only usepedestrian bridges and do notattack motorists?7. Can any reader deny the

fact that it is now a culture ofour nation to jaywalk or ignoreroad ordinances in violation ofthe laws? There is only one manner in

which to deal with the problem– hit the pockets hard! No suchviolations are tolerated inforeign countries, but then, ofcourse, we have rights but noobligations.

I have worked in Africa and Ihave quite a good idea whatthey do and to get rid of taxisthat abuse the law. They have aGhost Squad on certain keypoints, and pinpoint theseculprits with the help of thecommunity. They place officialswith two-way radios on the spotwhere it happens and 300metres further where the firstturn-off is where 10 or moreother officials will be waitingfor these drivers and pull themover. What they then do is oneofficial gets into the taxi andanother one follows them andthey take them to the closesttraffic office or police station. They then impound the vehicleuntil the driver/owner pays thespot fine (R500). Only then thedriver can leave the station. Ifyou dish out fines left andright, they feel nothing, but Ican assure you this methodworks.

produced from the 2014 vintage, Truter said

that it was remarkable to see wines scarcely18months old standing on thewinners’ podi-um.“Thevintagewas late and cool, with avery

wet pre-season and produced a relativelylight crop,” he said.“But now we have four wines barely out

of their nappies showing the quality and re-fined elegance to take top 10 trophies, sho-wing us how exceptional last year’s vintageactually was. Consumers can definitely tickoff 2014 as a must-have year for red wine,”he said. The judging panel for this year’s Absa Top

werk. Onder hulle tel Albert Frost, SchalkJoubert, Robin Auld, Ollie Viljoen. “Sjoe, daar’s baie,” sê hy.Sy eerste album,Hamlet byNight, is in 2008

bekend gestel.

Anew state-of-the-art radiation ma-chine was unveiled by managementat Tygerberg Hospital on Thursday.

At the cutting edge of technology and onpar with techniques used in Europe and theUSA, this machine will enable the hospitalto keep up with the ever increasing numberof cancer patients who flock here from sur-rounding communities and rural areas.

The Elekta synergy agility linear acceler-ator (Linac) was commissioned and in-stalled in 2014.

Laticia Pienaar, from the communica-tion directorate of the Western Cape healthdepartment explains how this machineworks and why it was needed.

“Successful radiotherapy depends on theability of the Linac to deliver a dose of radi-ation to the tumour while ensuring mini-mal radiation to normal tissue,” she said.

According to her, the new Linac has animproved beam shaping mechanismtermed a multileaf collimator that consistsof 160 ‘leaves’ of 0,5cm each and that can beshaped into almost any shape to target thetumour.

Latest hitech treatment“Previous collimators could only shape

the beam into squares or rectangular fields. The improved beam shaping mechanismenables better matching the shape of thebeam to the shape of the tumour, which de-creases radiation to normal surroundingtissue,” she said, adding that this reducesthe side effects normally associated withradiation treatment.

The new Linac also includes the latest hi-tech treatment that involves the use ofVMAT (volumetric modulated arc thera-py), which delivers the radiation dose tothe patient in a single moving arc from 0to 360 degrees.

“Older technology Linacs deliver thedose to the patient in a combination of sepa-rate beams. This new VMAT technologyvastly reduces treatment time.”

Although the implementation of the newtechnique involves more preparation timeinput, actual treatment time is reduced toa matter of minutes.

Pienaar said the new Linac has the capa-bility of treating over 450 patients per yearand forms part of the complement of otherLinacs in the department where nearly2 000 patients are treated each year.

“This includes curative radiotherapy forcervix, prostate, gastrointestinal, brainand breast cancers. Paediatric cancer pa-tients are also treated in the division withhigh quality advanced radiation tech-niques,” she said.

Totally unacceptableIn May this year Ian Alexander, execu-

tive vice president of Elekta Europe, Afri-ca, Latin America and Middle East, said thecurrent lack of treatment for cancer in Afri-can countries “is totally unacceptable”.

“Most sub-Saharan countries lack the fa-cilities and trained personnel to provide ef-fective prevention, early detection or ade-quate treatment of cancer,” he said in apress statement.

According to him, cancer globally killsmore people than HIV/AIDS, malaria andtuberculosis combined.

He said approximately 40 percent of can-cer cases can be completely prevented and40 percent can be cured with the right treat-ment.

“More than 50 percent of all cancer pa-tients worldwide would benefit from radia-tion therapy during the course of their dis-ease, either as the sole therapy or in combi-nation with surgery and chemotherapy.

Despite being home to 85 percent of theworld’s population, less than 35 percent ofthe world’s radiotherapy facilities are inlow-income countries,” he said.

The matric class of 2015 is entering one ofthe most challenging and arguably mostimportant times of their lives – the build-up to their final examinations.

“With 39 days to go until the start of the2015 NSC examinations – less than sevendays per subject of study time remaining– it is important for our all candidates tomake use of all the resources available tothem,” says Debbie Schäfer, Western Capeminister of education.

“Your success will depend on what youput into your studies. This in turn dependson how you plan your time, how hard youstudy, and that you stay focused, positiveand healthy.”

To help candidates to pass their matric,

the Western Cape Department of Educa-tion (WCED) has prepared a booklet called“Tips for Success”, to provide advice onpreparing for the exams, planning studytime and what to cover in each subject.

The booklet includes advice from thosewho excelled in last year’s exams, the examtimetable and information on bursariesand loans for studying after school.

“The importance of practising examquestions cannot be emphasised enough. This is why the WCED has made past exampapers available to all learners. Candi-dates should use their June examinationresults as an indication of what theirstronger and weaker subjects are. I encour-age all candidates to work through these

ahead of the exams,” says Schäfer.Candidates should also make use of the

e-portal resources on the WCED website tofind other resources that may assist them.

A wide range of matric revision videosare also available on the WCED YouTubechannel. These provide guidance mainlyon how to tackle specific questions in theexam. Matrics can visit the WCED websitefor a list of videos available at:

http://wced.school.za/documents/Mat-ric/matric-n/videos.htmlV The booklet can be downloaded from the WCEDwebsite at http://wced.school.za/documents/Matric/book/eng/TipsForSuccess.pdf. Exam pa-pers can be found here: http://wced.school.za/do-cuments/NSC-results/Papers-memos.html

Plattekloof - Baronetcy EstateSales & Rentals 021 558 [email protected]

From its elevated position and situated in a spectacularly striking part ofthe Western Cape, Baronetcy Estate offers a rare opportunity for aspiranttop-end homeowners to enjoy natural eco-living within the comfort of asecure gated community.

Aptly named after Sir David Pieter de Villiers Graaff, the 1st Baron of the Graaffbaronetcy, the development of this prestigious and highly sought after estatenestled on the Cape Town-facing slopes of the Tygerberg Mountain began overten years ago. The land was acquired from the De Grendel Farm, one the country’soldest and most historically significant farms. Baronetcy Estate is an eco-estate,which embraces a lifestyle of preserving a fondness for and harmony with its naturalenvironment, including the bordering Tygerberg Nature Reserve, which residentswill soon have direct access to. Intriguingly, the 300 hectare reserve is also home to125 bird species, 50 different species of mammals, 35 different types of reptiles,8 types of frog and 33 different types of butterfly. The natural harmony betweenthe estate and the reserve has shown itself to be a fundamentally significantcontributing factor to the overall success of the development. To enhance theexperience the reserve plans to construct walkways and trails to allow homeownersto enjoy a rewarding outdoor experience, literally on their doorsteps.

From the outset the estate was designed, as far as possible, to be a naturalextension of the reserve and also to preserve the original De Grendel Farmcharacter, including its indigenous fauna and flora, with the Cape’s cherishedfynbos being encouraged to flourish. The clear and balanced architectural andlandscaping guidelines that apply to the estate undoubtedly help to facilitatethe estate’s beautiful and stylishly designed open-plan homes, with plenty ofroom being allowed for creative freedom. As a result the über modern homesat Baronetcy Estate proudly grace the Tygerberg mountainside and boast someof the most breathtaking panoramic views Cape Town has to offer, with viewsstretching from Cape Point on the left to Robben Island and Melkbosstrand onyour right. As a result the gently sweeping ocean, Table Mountain and RobbenIsland are the focal points from the windows of homes that manage to balanceenvironmental harmony with elegant modern design. In keeping with this hugelysuccessful design culture buyers are being encouraged by the overseeing estatearchitect to thoroughly research the architectural design of their homes and thechoice of materials used.

The estate plot prices start at R2.55 million and range up to R4 million includingVAT. Please note however, that these prime investments sell themselves andthere are only a few plots left in the top tier bordering the Tygerberg Reserve. If you desire a home and lifestyle that harmoniously blends the tranquility ofMother Nature with the lure of the city lights, don’t miss the opportunity tostake your claim to one of these prime portions of real estate in the upmarketBaronetcy Estate.

A round of musical chairs has precededthe Toyota Cape Dealer Rally, penulti-mate event in the 2015 National Rally

Championship to be staged in Durbanvilleand Malmesbury on Friday and Saturday. With the leading teams in this year’s game

of thrones level-pegged after the previousround, early log leader Mark Cronje and theFord Performance Rally team announcedthat Cronje’s co-driver, the highly experi-enced Robin Houghton, will step down forthe rest of the season“inaneffort to reducethe weight of car andcrew to improveMark’s fight for thechampionship”.Gerhard Snyman-

will now fill the hotseat next to Cronje totake on arch-rivalsLeeroy Poulter andElvéne Coetzee (Cas-trolTeamToyotaYar-is S2000) in the Toyo-ta Cape Dealer Rally.Such is these two

teams’ dominancethat with two eventsremaining, third-placedGiniel deVilli-ers from Stellen-bosch and Carolyn Swan (Castrol Team To-yota Yaris) are the only participants stillcapable of winning the championship. The Dakar star is 7.5 points clear of the

consistent Gugu Zulu (Volkswagen Sasolra-cing Polo) who is the only contender besidesPoulter/Coetzee to finish every rally up to

this point in the season. But with only twoevents remaining Zulu’s best hope is to chal-lengeDeVilliers, a formerDakarwinner, forthird place in the driver’s championship. The S1600 class also sees a change of seats,

including a change of cars for championshipcontenders Matthew Vacy-Lyle and Schalkvan Heerden.Only seven points shy of log leaders and

team mates Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle (Yato Tools Toyota Etios R2), Vacy-Ly-

le/Van Heerden havesecured the Electro-thread Toyota EtiosS1600 R2 of ChrisCoertse for the Capeevent after they spec-tacularly rolled theirFragram Tools EtiosS1600 R2 in theTshwane rally.Botterill/Vacy-Ly-

le are only 2.5 pointsclear of the ImperialToyota Tshwane Mo-tor Rally runners-upPaulus Franken/Henry Kohne (Mani-tou Group VW PoloR2), so an electrifyingduel can be expectedin the Swartland.

The seventh and penultimate round, sup-ported by the Toyota and the Toyota dealersin the Western Cape, will kick off with fourtar stages on Friday 18 September (two atKillarney and the two extremely popularnight stages at Cape Gate), with eight gravelstages in Malmesbury on Saturday.

My oupas, oomsen my pa is rugbymal,” verduidelik Do-minique.

skool blaas, is mymentor.

Gevra of sy ditdalk professioneelwil doen, washaar ant-woord eenvoudig: “Natuurlik!”

Haar fluitjie gaan ’nrugby-deuntjie sing

Dominique van Wyk het al meer as 50wedstryde agter die blad as assistent-skeidsregter.

He had to wait for two seasons, but thewait was worth every second whenSouth African triathlete Richard

Murray won his second world triathlon se-ries race with his victory in Edmonton, Ca-nada, recently.Murraywon the sprint race in 53minutes

and 19 seconds. Spain’s Javier Gomez wassecond and Mario Mola (also Spain) third. This was Murray’s secondWTS victory aft-er Hamburg in 2012. He has come close vari-ous times since then with second and thirdplaces, but getting that elusive victorycould not have come at a better time for thelad from Durbanville.Murray has been working extremely

hard on his swimming, while also adaptingto a new racing schedule to avoid a disap-pointing end to his season like last year.He was less than 20 seconds behind com-

ing out of the water, and being a strong bik-er, that gapwas closed quickly.Murray andcurrent world champion Gomez stuck toeach other like glue in that final leg of 5km(run).“Javi was hanging on the whole time and

I really had to give it everything,” Murraysaid. “I had some issues at the start of theday, but I kept my focus and did not let it

distract me. I had to give it everything inthe end.My swimwasmuchbetter than lastyear, and I managed to push hard on thebike.”Some athletes might have given up or let

the frustration of so many close calls get tothem, but part of that which sets Murrayapart from the rest is his inherent positiveattitude and the ability to always take thebest from a less than ideal situation.“There obviously were times when I real-

ly felt frustrated and disappointed whenthings did not go the way I had planned orhoped. But I kept grinding it out in theswimming pool, on the track and on thebike because I knew that if I keep at it, theresults will come.”Themen’s race saw important changes in

the world rankings, as Vincent Luis(France) moved into third over SpaniardFernando Alarza. Luis’s fourth place finishputs him just 277 points behind leader Go-mez. Murray’s win places him fourth in therankings. With just 530 points separating the top

four men anybody can still be crownedWorld Champion on 19 September. The season’s Grand Finale is in Chicago

on 19 September.
