P remiers’ Reading Challenge With less than 30 days to go before the challenge ends, our school is well on track to have 100%

completion again; something Brentwood Park is now well known for in Department of Education. Currently, 60% of the school population have entered the appropri-ate amount of books to complete the challenge, with many more well on the way to achieving the 100 books status. Overall, our school has read nearly 30,000 books all together, a figure that will increase as more students add more books. Our Grade 5 students are trialling the new version of the Premiers’ Reading Challenge for en-tering their books, which will hopefully be released to the rest of Victoria at the start of next year.

P arent Opinion Survey Thank you, to those families who have

completed the brief online Parent Opinion Survey. Although we distributed 235 personalized links to the survey, we’ve only achieved 46 respondents. Unfortunately, this only equates to a 20% response rate. In past years when paper surveys were distributed, we achieved approximately 85% of our sample returned. Despite the disappointing response rate, we do appreciate the contribution of those 46 families who contributed to the process. The results will be forwarded to the school in due course. The survey is still being conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 22 July to Sunday 11 August. Approximately 30 per cent of parents have been invited to participate in this year’s survey. Can we encourage all parents who received the survey through email to respond. We would appreciate and value your feedback. All responses to the survey are anonymous.

K nitting Club Congratulations to Ava (4VG) for completing her first winter scarf. Ava is an active member of

Brentwood Park Primary School’s Knitting Club. Do you want to learn how to knit and make some new friends? BPPS organises knitting classes for beginners and more experienced knitters every Thursday lunch time. Classes take place in the Library.

O verseas University Students Visitation On Monday, a group of fifty university students from Jiangsu, CHINA visited Brentwood Park Primary School. The group is currently visiting Victoria under a scholarship program, and is attending training courses on education and teaching at Melbourne University. The students expressed a desire to visit a primary school in Victoria and given the very positive experience afforded to a similar group who visited us last year, Brentwood Park Primary School came highly recommended! The purpose for the school visit was to learn about school curriculum with special reference to language teaching and learning, and to observe our literacy and numeracy lessons in action.

S chool Council As part of General Business, the Preliminary Summary School Report 2019 for this year’s

Student Attitudes to School Survey was presented. The Attitudes to School Survey measures how students feel about the teaching and learning, positive culture and climate, and student engagement at our school. I am pleased to say that the results for our school continue to be very high in all areas as follows: EFFECTIVE TEACHING PRACTICE

Differentiated learning challenge - 94%

Stimulating learning - 92%

Classroom behaviour - 88% TEACHER STUDENT RELATIONS

High expectations for success - 97%

Effort - 91%

Teacher concern - 88% LEARNER CHARACTERISTICS AND DISPOSITION

Motivation and interest - 89%

Self-regulation and goal setting - 92% SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

School connectedness and belonging 90%

Student voice and agency - 81%

Sense of inclusion - 95% STUDENT SAFETY

Advocate at school - 95%

Managing bullying (students feel safe) - 88%

Respect for diversity - 90% These overall positive scores indicate that we are continuing to embed a positive culture of caring for our students and that they care for each other and our consistent approach to learning. We can continue to be justifiably proud of our students and staff. Jim Bell, principal

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE.

Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them off

their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are required to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm bookings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the De-partment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
