INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

1. General preparation of papers

All papers must be typed, serially numbered, and divided into sections, each described

by a short heading. The title should be as concise as possible, and followed by the names of the authors and the addresses where the work described was carried out. The current addresses of authors, where different to these, should be clearly indi? cated. Each paper must be accompanied by an abstract, which follows the list of addresses. It should be self-contained and intelligible by itself, and not contain refer? ences or unexplained abbreviations. Spelling should conform to the preferred spelling of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.

2. Preparation of TJrjX papers

The Society encourages authors to use WT^K. for the preparation of all papers submit? ted for publication, especially those with a large amount of mathematics. Although WF^K. is the preferred macro package, any TgX source code will be accepted.

A style file, rspublic. els, is available from the Production Office, either on disk or via our Web site (www. pubs. royalsoc. ac. uk). It is not essential that this style file is obtained before the paper is written (one advantage of I^TfTJX is the interchangeability of style files). However, authors should set the width of the text to 13.5 cm.

The source code (files with the extension .tex) corresponding to the final version should be sent once the paper is accepted. It can be sent either by post or email, and should include any specially defined macros. The source code should also be contained within a single file, whose root name should be the name of the paper; e.g. the source code for the paper 98TA99K should be labelled 98TA99K.TEX.

3. Preparation of non-TJrjX papers

Authors preparing their papers using packages other than TgX should still submit their electronic files on disk, minimizing the formatting of their document. Where

T^X is not available, the use of MathType? for the setting of mathematics is

encouraged.

4. Units and symbols

As far as possible the recommendations?based on the International System of Units

(SI)?contained in Quantities, units, and symbols (1975, The Royal Society, ?3.50, available from the Sales and Marketing Department) should be followed.

5. Illustrations

Line drawings

Descriptions should be placed whenever possible in the legends and not on the figures themselves. Labels should be brief, e.g. (a), (b), (i), (ii), etc., and explained in the

viii Instructions to authors

legend. Any text should be in a roman lower-case font, while mathematical variables should be in an italic font. All lettering should be large enough on the original to withstand reduction to final size in the journal (typically a width of 10 cm).

Photographs

Authors should supply matt prints marked on the back with the author's name and the number of the figure, and with top and bottom indicated.

Illustrations in electronic form

Authors are encouraged to supply figures on disk in Encapsulated PostScript form, in addition to hard copies. These will be read in-house by Adobe Illustrator?, and

PostScript that does not conform to this application will not be used. Figures should be supplied as separate files, named consistently using the author's surname and

figure and part number, where appropriate, e.g. J0NE03D. EPS would be the Encap? sulated PostScript file for figure 3d of Jones's article. Please contact the Journals Production Office (0171 451 2643) if in any doubt.

6. Colour

Philosophical Transactions A welcomes the submission of papers containing colour illustrations. However, owing to the high cost of colour reproduction, authors are asked to contribute towards the extra cost. An estimate will be sent to authors upon submission. Exemption from charges for colour reproduction will only be made if referees decide that colour is essential, and if authors make an explicit case to the Editor explaining why they are unable to obtain the necessary funds.

7. Tables

Tables should be numbered in arabic numerals and referred to in the text by their numbers (e.g. 'see table 3'). Captions to tables should be brief. Column headings should be in lower-case lettering. The units of measurement and any numerical factors should be placed at the head of each column, or centred over the columns where they span more than one column. Units should be contained within parentheses, e.g. F

(MHz), q (kgmol"1).

8. References

References to the literature cited must be given in alphabetical order at the end of the paper, and should be arranged as follows.

1. Name(s) with initials of the authors. 2. Year of publication of the paper or book. 3. The title of the paper (roman) or book (italic). 4. The title of the periodical, abbreviated where possible. 5. Volume number in bold. 6. First and last page numbers.
