Educational Reforms via Technology
Recently, there has been uproar about
modifying a three year degree program to
a four year one in India. There were
arguments for and against the introduction
of a four year undergraduate program. While the four
year college education would help students who aspire to
go abroad for higher studies, the same would mean a
disaster for students from a lower middle class section of
the society, who want to quickly graduate and join the
workforce.Being brought up in India and having studied
in the Indian education system, I believe that our higher
secondary education and undergraduate programs are
quite rigorous and they prepare students well to compete
internationally. However, research, technology and life
skill training are not strong points of our current
undergraduate education system.
It would be a highly desirable move if the Indian
education system decides to incorporate basic research
training modules, technology and life skill training
sessions in the curriculum. Also, investing in online
learning management systems, databases and other
resources can greatly benefit the above cause.
Developing a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)
platform and providing some free MOOC education
modules to students can be a major game changer in the
field of Indian education system. Giving students full
degree credit for completing MOOC courses can solve
the three or four year degree dilemma.
The future of learning is fast changing, especially with
the help of technology. With proper infrastructure,
trained teachers and technology, access to quality
education in every corner of India can become a
possibility. Though it is a complex task, educational
reform can begin when the following requirements are in
order:
Qualified teachers: Attracting and retaining top teaching
talent is the key to solid and quality education. Serious
consideration must be given to attract brightest minds in
academia.
Major overhaul of learning resources, facilities and
infrastructure.
Fixing student teacher ratio in classrooms.
Designing curriculum keeping the current industry
standards and requirements in mind.
In the end, I would like to say that education reform
should be such that it enhances student experience, gives
them a robust standing wherever they may be, and open a
variety of career avenues for them to choose from. From
a faculty standpoint it should be such that it adds value,
vigor and excitement in the life of the teachers. Finally,
the expectation of the nation from an educational reform
would mean — well educated/informed citizens who are
tolerant of one another, can comprehend the vastness of
knowledge, understand and apply logic, innovate ideas
that can start or sustain industries for job creation and
become stalwarts for upcoming generations.

the departments to the Faculty members.
Coordinated by Mrs. B. Sujatha, Associate Professor &
Dr. S. Imaculate Rosaline, Asst. Professor, E&CE.
About the Workshop
The emergence of several electromagnetic simulation
software enables to choose the most appropriate method
for the design andoptimization of devices operating in a
wide range of frequencies.Hybridization of several
computational methods enables the efficient analysis of
a broad spectrum of EM problems, including antennas,
microstrip circuits, RF components and biomedical
systems, the placement of antennas on electrically large
structures, the calculation of scattering as well as the
investigation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
This faculty development program familiarized with the
emerging software for RF circuits and antenna design
and also helped to analyze the research issues and
challenges in this area. This program also provided
hands on training on ADS and HFSS added with a
demonstration on Vector Network Analyzer.
Topics covered in the FDP are:
1. Introduction to ADS and HFSS
2. Design procedure of various antennas and array
systems using software
3. Filter design and the calculation of scattering
parameters
4. EMI/ EMC considerations in RF circuit design
5. Demonstration of antenna measurement equipments

Bridge Course on “Python Programming and
Raspberry Pi”10 – 12th February 2017.
Department of Electronics and Instrumentation
Engineering organized Three days (10-12th Feb 2017)
bridge course on Python programming and Raspberry
Pi for the Sixth semester students. The objective of the
bridge course is to improve their knowledge in device
programming using python platform and compete for
the industrial needs. Resource persons were from Data
starts, Bangalore working as data analyst and online
tutors.
One of the key learning platforms for IoT (Internet of
Things) is the Raspberry Pi. The RasPi is a popular
platform because it offers a complete Linux server in a
tiny platform for a very low cost. In fact, one of the
most difficult parts of using Raspberry Pi for learning
about IoT is picking the right projects with which to
begin. The raspberry pi boards are used in many
applications like Media streamer, Arcade machine,
Tablet computer, Home automation, Carputer, Internet
radio, Controlling robots, Cosmic Computer, Hunting
for meteorites, Coffee and also in raspberry pi based
projects. Python is a widely used high-level, general-
purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language.
Its design philosophy emphasizes code readability, and
Swatch Bharath | Print only if necessary | Save Trees | Go Green Page 8
its syntax allows programmers to express concepts in
fewer lines of code than possible in languages such as
C++ or Java. Apart from Windows, Linux and MacOS,
CPython implementation runs on 21 different
platforms. Iron Python is a .NET framework based
Python implementation and it is capable of running in
both Windows, Linux and in other environments where
.NET framework is available.
