Summary:I was recruited in November 2000 as geologist in the Senegalese mining administration.
Before my current position as Director of Mining Prospecting and Promotion since 2015, I was Head of the Documentation Centre and Mining Cadastre of the Directorate of Mines and Geology (DMG), Head of the Mines and Quarries Division, Head of the Regional Department of Mines and Geology in Dakar. I coordinated the Africa–Europe Georesources Observation Project (AEGOS), the Institutional Diagnostic Programme of the Ministry of Mines and the Diagnosis of the Legal and Tax Framework of the Mining Sector.
In my current position, I contribute to the implementation of the mining exploration policy. In particular, I am involved in updating the geological infrastructure and geological and mining documentation, in elaborating and implementing the mining promotion policy and in overseeing the publication of documents and geological maps. I am in charge of organizing the bi-annual Senegalese International Mining Exhibition and conference (SIM SENEGAL) and participate in all the international conferences and exhibitions for the promotion of the mining sector.

Résumé:J'ai été recrutée en novembre 2000 en tant que géologue dans l'administration minière sénégalaise. Summary:In 1995 immediately after obtaining a B.Sc., I joined the Petroleum Exploration and Production Department as a geologist where we carried out geological mapping of the Lake George and Lake Edward basin in the Western Rift Valley before joining Department of Geological Survey and Mines as a geochemist. I actively carried out prospecting for minerals across the country, notably gold exploration in Buhweju, Muko, Busia and Mubende which have today become gold producing regions of Uganda, I explored iron ores in SW Uganda, tin, tantalite, niobium and tungsten in central and southwest Uganda. In 2003, I was promoted to senior geologist and then to principal geologist — exploration in 2016 where I led the implementation of mineral exploration programmes, I participated in mineral investment promotion locally and internationally, still involved in planning and budgeting for the Directorate of the Geological Survey and Mines
Currently I am Assistant Commissioner — Geology tasked with development and implementation of geological mapping, geochemical surveys and mineral exploration programmes. Key responsibilities include: policy formulation and implementation pertaining to geological mapping, geochemical surveys and mineral exploration programmes, development of strategic plans, budgets and

Actuellement, je suis Commissaire Adjoint — Géologie, chargé de l'élaboration et de la mise en œuvre de la cartographie géologique, des levés géochimiques et des programmes d'exploration minérale. Mes principales responsabilités comprennent: la formulation et la mise en œuvre des politiques concernant la cartographie géologique, les levés géochimiques et les programmes d'exploration minérale, élaboration des plans stratégiques, des budgets et des rapports, cartographie géologique et évaluation des ressources minérales pour un développement étendu, développement du capital humain pour la gestion des ressources géologiques et minérales et le contrôle des tremblements de terre et d’autres risques géologiques afin de donner des conseils au gouvernement et au public.

Work experience: • From 2007–2008, I worked for a
Canadian mining company called High River Gold (HRG). It is a private company in which I undertook geological and mining research and worked as a geologist specializing in general geological mapping. The work performed was varied and included planning and conducting geochemical surveys of soils and rocks, mapping geological details, monitoring mine drilling (RAB, RC, DD) and describing cuttings and structural measurements on drill cores from various projects of the company.
• From September 2008, I am employed by the Bureau of Mining and Geology of Burkina (BUMIGEB), as a geological engineer in the Geological Field Mapping Section where the main tasks were to carry out field trips — organize
the field team, transport and any other equipment required for the trip.
• From 2008–2011, as Project Manager, I was in charge of planning and carrying out geological mapping at a scale of 1:200 000 on the Diapaga–Kirtachi sheet, eastern Burkina Faso. The work resulted in the creation of the geological map and explanatory notes of the area. From 2011–2013, I also coordinated the geological mapping work at the scale 1:200 000 of the Oudalan sheet in northern Burkina Faso and from 2013–2015 the geological mapping at the scale 1:200 000 of the Gaoua–Batié sheet in southwestern Burkina Faso. The work resulted in geological map models and technical reports.
• During the same time, I was in charge of coordinating several mining research projects for private mining companies. My main tasks were to plan, carry out technical activities and go to the field for geological mapping work.
• From June 2015–August 2016, I contributed to and participated in work with experts from the French Geological Survey (BRGM) in the regional geochemical survey of stream sediments in southwestern Burkina Faso, as part of the Project to Support the Development of the Mining Sector (PADSEM). This work made it possible to identify the mineral resources of this part of the country.
• I also contributed to and participated in a collaboration with the experts of EFFIGIS, a geological survey based in Canada, from April 2016–June 2018, in the geological mapping work at the scale 1:200 000 and 1:1000 000 of Burkina Faso. This work resulted in the development of geological maps and explanatory notes.
• From 2015–2017, I was appointed Regional Director of BUMIGEB–Bobo, in charge of coordinating and executing BUMIGEB's mining and geological programmes and projects at the Burkina Faso Regional level. And since 2017, I have been Director of Geological and Mining Research, in charge of the design, planning, execution and monitoring-control of BUMIGEB's
mining and geological programmes and projects.
Affiliations: Since 2013, I have been an active member of the Association of Geologists of Burkina Faso (AGBF) and I was Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Geologists' Conference, the same year. And since 2014, a founding member and President of the Workers' Mutual of Bureau of Mining and Geology of Burkina (BUMIGEB).
Summary: I am a geological and mining mapping expert with 12 years of experience in the mining sector in Burkina Faso. I have contributed to deepening the knowledge of several mining companies' research projects. I have 11 years of experience at BUMIGEB and I have coordinated, participated or contributed to the realization of several geological mapping projects and mining research in the country. I have also coordinated and contributed to the preparation of various BUMIGEB strategic documents, including: the strategic plan, the State/BUMIGEB plan contract, annual activity programmes, etc.
Since 2017, I have been the Head of the Geological and Mining Research Directorate (DRGM), the department responsible for coordinating the supervision units for geological and mining work: GIS and remote sensing,

I coordinated the activities of the Project to Support the Development of the Mining Sector (PADSEM), financed by the World Bank. PADSEM started in March 2012 and closed in June 20. During this time, I was responsible for planning and budgeting activities, ensuring that the work was carried out properly in accordance with the plan.

• Durant les mêmes périodes, j'étais responsable de la coordination de différents projets de recherche minière au nom des sociétés minières privées. Mes tâches principales étaient de planifier, de réaliser des activités techniques et aller sur le terrain pour effectuer des travaux de cartographie géologique.
• De juin 2015–août 2016, j'ai contribué et participé en collaboration avec des experts du Service Géologique Français (BRGM) au levé géochimique régional des sédiments fluviatiles dans la région sud-ouest du Burkina Faso, dans le cadre du Projet d'Appui au Développement du Secteur Minier (PADSEM). Ces travaux ont permis d'identifier les ressources minérales de cette partie du pays.
• J'ai également contribué et participé en collaboration avec les experts d'EFFIGIS, un service géologique au Canada, d'avril 2016– juin 2018, aux travaux de cartographie géologique au 1/200 000ème et au 1/1 000 000ème du Burkina Faso. Ces travaux ont abouti à l'élaboration des cartes géologiques et des notices explicatives.
• De 2015–2017, j'ai été nommé Directeur Régional du BUMIGEB–Bobo, responsable de la coordination
et de l'exécution des programmes et des projets miniers et géologiques du BUMIGEB au niveau régional du Burkina Faso. Et depuis 2017, je suis Directeur de la Recherche Géologique et Minière, chargé de la conception, de la planification, de l'exécution et du suivi-contrôle des programmes et des projets miniers et géologiques du BUMIGEB.

AbstractsTHEME: CARACTERISTIQUES PETROGRAPHIQUES DES PEGMATITES DE LA REGION KEMON-TOUI (CENTRE-BENIN)
Resume:Dans la région de Kémon-Toui (centre-Bénin) des filons de pegmatites et de quartz porteurs de minéralisation ont été identifiés. Ces pegmatites sont généralement orientées Nord N0–10° et Nord 150–170°avec des longueurs variables 40–1100 m et des épaisseurs pouvant atteindre 15 m. Les travaux antérieurs de reconnaissance minière effectués dans cette région ont prouvé l’existence d’indices de colombo-tantalites dans ces pegmatites. Le présent travail vise à mieux faire connaître les pegmatites de cette région. Sur le plan macroscopique, trois types de pegmatites ont été distinguées: les pegmatites à grosse paillettes de muscovite, les pegmatites à Béryl, tantale et niobium (Be-Ta-Nb) et les pegmatites fortement fracturées à tantale et niobium (Ta-Nb). L’analyse microscopique de lames minces confectionnées à partir de neuf échantillons prélevés sur un périmètre réduit révèle qu’elles sont essentiellement composées du microcline, de l’orthose, du quartz et de la muscovite. En vue d’apprécier l’intérêt économique de cette zone, des analyses géochimiques s’avèrent nécessaires pour déterminer les teneurs des différentes minéralisations et leur répartition spatiale.

Résumé:Les bassins volcano-sédimentaires sont des structures géologiques d’intérêt scientifique et économique car ils constituent des zones idéales pour l’emplacement des gisements de substances utiles (cuivre, zinc, argent, plomb, or, etc…).
Au Bénin, des bassins volcano-sédimentaires peu ou pas métamorphisés ont été identifiés. Au Nord du 11ème parallèle, le bassin le plus étendu et le plus important, celui de Pako, contient des roches basiques à ultrabasiques et des roches acides associées à des sédiments pélitiques (Breda, 1982).
D’après l’analyse de 26 lames minces issues d’échantillons prélevés dans le secteur sud de la Pako la présente étude vise à préciser les caractéristiques pétrographiques des roches du secteur. Les résultats montrent que les formations du secteur sont constituées de roches basiques à ultrabasiques, de volcanites et hypovolcanites acides associées à des métasédiments quartzitiques et à des sédiments pélitiques. Les sulfures observés au niveau des magmatites basiques sont de la pyrite, la chalcopyrite et l’argent associées à de l’or.

In Benin, slightly metamorphosed or unmetamorphosed volcano-sedimentary basins have been identified. North of the 11th parallel, the most extensive basin is the Pako basin which contains basic to ultrabasic rocks and acidic rocks associated with pelitic sediments (Breda, 1982).
Based on the analysis of 26 thin sections from samples taken in the southern part of Pako, the present study aims to specify the petrographic characteristics of the rocks in this area. The results show that the formations of the area consist of basic to ultrabasic rocks, acidic volcanites and hypovolcanites associated with quarzitic metasediments and pelitic sediments. The sulphides observed in the basic magmatites are pyrite, chalcopyrite and silver associated with gold.

RésuméLe minerai de fer du Bassin de Kandi, d’une catégorie inférieure avec une teneur moyenne en fer total de 56,72% présente une diversité de minéraux. L’étude métallogénique a révélé, par ordre de proportion décroissante, les oxy-hydroxydes de fer (goéthite, hématite et magnétite), les sulfures (pyrite, chalcopyrite, blende, galène) et accessoirement le zircon et la scheelite. Les résultats de la fluorescence aux rayons x ont mis en évidence d’une part le Fe2O3 (57.91 à 91.33%), le SiO2 (3.07 à 33.19%) et, d’autre part, les éléments nocifs avec notamment l’aluminium (2.94 à 7.74%), le phosphore (0.79 à 2.29%) et le soufre (< 0.3%). Ces éléments nocifs présentant des teneurs nettement supérieures à la limite tolérée en métallurgie indiquent que ce minerai n’est donc pas approprié pour la fabrication de l’acier. Par contre, il peut être utilisé pour la fabrication de la fonte. Par ailleurs, la présence du vanadium (0.04 à 0.11%) garantit un meilleur alliage et une bonne durabilité. L’étude comparative du minerai de fer du Bassin de Kandi avec d’autres minerais de fer de même nature et déjà en exploitation révèle que le minerai de fer du Bassin de Kandi peut être mis en valeur malgré le taux élevé en silice.

AbstractThe M’Bétékoukou intrusion comprises, from the core to the periphery, gabbros and monzodiorite. These rocks resulted from the magmatic differentiation of mafic magma. They display a magmatic flow fabric, suggesting the setting up and crystallization of magma during strain and the syn-orogenic emplacement of the intrusion, related to regional deformation. After their formation, the gabbros and monzodiorites were affected by retrograde metamorphism during the tectonic motions of the blocks of the Dahomeyides belt.
Geochemical analyses by means of a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer revealed anomalous zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), titanium (Ti), chrome (Cr), silver (Ag), nickel (Ni), antimony (Sb) and bismuth (Bi) in these rocks.
The study of mafic magmatism will elucidate the contribution of the mantle
to the magmatic processes, from subduction to collision, while assisting in tracing the geological history of the Pan-African Dahomeyides belt.
RésuméL’intrusion de M’Bétékoukou comprend, du cœur vers la périphérie, les gabbros et les monzodiorites. Ces roches proviennent de la différenciation magmatique des magmas mafiques tout en affichant une fabrique magmatique d’épanchement, ce qui suggère l’emplacement et la cristallisation du magma lors de la déformation et la mise en place synorogénique de l'intrusion, reliées à la déformation régionale. Un métamorphisme rétrograde a atteint les gabbros et les monzodiorites, suite à leur formation, en association avec les mouvements tectoniques de la ceinture des Dahoméyides.
Les analyses géochimiques au spectromètre à fluorescence aux rayons X portatif ont permis de mettre en évidence des teneurs anomales en zinc (Zn), cuivre (Cu), cobalt (Co), manganèse (Mn), titane (Ti), chrome (Cr), argent (Ag), nickel (Ni), antimoine (Sb) et bismuth (Bi).
Cette étude du magmatisme mafique est un moyen efficace pour comprendre la contribution du manteau au niveau des processus magmatiques depuis la subduction à la collision et pour retracer l’histoire géologique de la ceinture panafricaine des Dahoméyides.

Council for Geoscience wins R100 000 grant and an Earthwatch subscription at the 4th SANSA Earth Observation Open Innovation Challenge
The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) conducted their fourth Earth Observation Data Open Innovation Challenge (EOD IOC) from 5 September–31 October 2019. The
finalists of the challenge were invited to present their ideas at the 2nd Space for National Development Conference (12–14 November 2019) at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice Menlyn that focussed on
Space and the 4th Industrial Revolution. The theme for the OIC in 2019 was:
“How can innovative technology applications for multi-sensor satellite

data be used to advance societal and commercial competitiveness in the South African mining industry?”
Gabrielle Denner, a Remote Sensing intern at the Council for Geoscience (CGS), was motivated by Dr David Khoza, the Executive of Applied Geosciences at CGS, to enter the EOD challenge. The title of her proposal was “Using remote sensing and machine learning to detect and map illegal mining activities in the gold mining regions in South Africa.” The aim of the project is to create a reliable illegal mining monitoring system by using satellite imagery with innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence. Her interdisciplinary team assisted in compiling the final value proposition and business model for the pitching presentation. The key team members are Dr Henk Coetzee, Dr Ravi Vadapalli, Dr Chiedza Musekiwa, Dr Emmanuel Sakala, and Ms Gabrielle Denner.
The journey from coming up with a proposal until the final pitching event was quite a roller-coaster ride. The initial idea to map illegal mining in South Africa
was fairly easy to come up with since the topic of Gabrielle's Master’s thesis was to map illegal mining in Ghana. However, the environment of illegal mining in South Africa is completely different to that in Ghana. The mapping of illegal mining in SA using earth observation has never been attempted before. The goal is eventually to develop an automated illegal mining monitoring system. The most challenging part of this event was to establish the business model and to understand where the value proposition lies. Since CGS is a parastatal company, there is room for commercialization. This project could be the key to pioneering an automated geological system that provides actionable intelligence that has a high positive impact on society.
SANSA and partners did a n outstanding job in hosting this event, where they even went as far as giving training to the finalists for the pitching event. The prizes for the winners of the EOD challenge were as follows:
1. An Earthwatch subscription that gives the winning team access to specialized
satellite data from SANSA and access to a subscription to Digital Globe (a Maxar Company) satellite data.
2. R100 000 grant funding for research and development for a team from the public sector.
3. Potential investment of $50 thousand USD to $5 million USD for selected teams from the private sector.
The finalists of the pitching event had 5 minutes to give their presentation where a panel of judges evaluated them. Afterwards 5 minutes were given for questions and answers. The judges were Alex Fortescue (Digital Globe), Matome Makwela (Minerals Council South Africa), Zipho Tyoda (Department of Science and Innovation), Kanina Foss (SA Innovation Summit, part of the Unicorn Group), and Imraan Saloojee (SANSA).
