Summer Tours Thanks to our summer student, Kate Day, the church will be open for tours weekdays 11am-4pm until the end of August.

Student Accommodations Available Stan and Barbara Armstrong currently have accommodations available for a female university student who would prefer the quiet and security of a private home within easy walking distance of St. Mary’s and Dalhousie Universities and Kings’ College. Contact them at [email protected], or phone 423-2177 between 9 am and 9 pm.

Message from Gary Woolgar – Can you help? Is there someone at St. George's who may be able to offer a room to rent from August 27th? It would most probably be for a short term as I re-settle in Halifax. I am a non-smoker without pets and am very quiet. Please email [email protected]

The Lessons appointed for the Daily Offices for this week are found on pages xxiv and xxxv of the Book of Common Prayer.

Daily Offices Each weekday, a small group of parishioners gathers for Morning and Evening Prayer. During the summer months, this quiet, contemplative service takes place in the Little Dutch Church. Morning Prayer begins at 7:30 a.m. (beginning this August 18, at 7:00 a.m. on Mondays) and Evening Prayer at 5:30 p.m. Many or most of us are not able to be present due to work or family obligations, but as we go about our daily tasks of getting ready for work, or getting children ready for their activities in the morning, or as we are driving home or preparing dinner at the end of the day, it is good for us to be mindful of those who are offering prayers for the parish, the neighbourhood and the world. Usually in each case, only two or three are gathered together. If you are passing by or would like to experience one of these lovely little services, do come along.

Church washroom under construction The washroom under the stairs near the parking lot entrance to the church is being redone, as part of a project to remodel both washrooms by the end of the summer. The work is made possible by a donor from the parish, and we look forward to the improvements it will bring, including protecting the pipes from freezing (a problem in winters past) and repairs to the floors. The washrooms in the church will be completed one at a time, so we will always have at least one working washroom in the church!

Soup Kitchen Update August 2nd: Team 2, led by Mary Hills and Michelle Gabriel; 80 were fed. Food from Feed NS.

Yesterday, August 9th: Team 3, led by Mary Hills and Michelle Gabriel, filling in for Mike & Wendy Himmelman. Food from Feed NS.

This week, August 16th: Team 4, led by Evelyn Mann and Michelle Gabriel. Food from Feed NS.

A noon-time organ recital will be given by James Burchill at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Martello Street, Halifax, on Wednesday, 27 August 2014 at 12:10 pm. A collection in aid of the Organ Restoration Fund will be received.

The programme of chorale preludes will include pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Eric Thiman, Gordon Phillips, David Schack, J. S. Bach, Hubert Parry, Walter Pach, Robin Milford and Sigfrid Karg-Elert.

Financial Update At the AGM, parishioners agreed to a budget which included an expectation of $264,500 in undesignated offerings to provide for the worship, ministry and mission as we have come to expect it here at St. George's. As of the end of July, we have only achieved 38% of that goal. This means that we would need $7,480 per week for the subsequent 22 weeks of 2014. Last Sunday, August 3rd, undesignated offerings totalled $3,479 including the week's portion of monthly direct debits...still a long way from our objective.

However, it is the case that our actual expenses are significantly different than budgeted, primarily due to the timing of the arrival our new rector. The Finance Committee will be reassessing the Parish's real financial needs for the balance of 2014, reporting to the September meeting of Parish Council.

Please include St. George's financial well-being in your daily prayers. We all know that prayer is powerful through Him who sustains us.

Veith House Back to School Backpacks Program Veith House, a non-profit organization in Halifax’s North End, is helping students in our community start the school year on the right foot by supplying backpacks with the school supplies as listed by their specific schools and classes. For a donation of $60.00, you can help an underprivileged child from our community start school with the necessary supplies, a brand new backpack, and a renewed sense of confidence and motivation.

Last year Veith House’s Back to School Backpacks program assisted 20 HRM students in elementary, junior high and high school, and this year they would like to support 50 students. In return for your support, Veith House is prepared to issue you a tax-deductible receipt. To help, please contact Tamsyn Brennan at (902) 453-4320.

Direct Debit Tokens In response to the feedback received during the Direct Debit Drive, we have created two types of tokens, either of which direct debit donors may place on the plate during the Offertory. One is a laminated card, the other a round piece of wood, both indicating its purpose. They are located in a glass container at the back of the church, easily visible. For those considering direct debit offerings, information and forms are located in the same proximity.
