ABOUT THE VLP
The mission of the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers
Project (VLP) is to ensure that the legal system is accessible
to those who, because of special needs or the overwhelming
burdens of poverty, would not otherwise have their rights
protected or their voices heard.
Since 1990, the VLP has harnessed the powerful pro bono
commitment of the private bar to provide critical civil legal
services and equal access to the justice system to thousands of
Brooklyn residents. As an essential legal lifeline, the VLP remains
uniquely responsive to the evolving legal needs of Brooklyn’s
overlooked and underserved communities.
THE VLP MODEL & IMPACT
Last year, the VLP provided direct civil legal services on over
8,600 matters benefiting over 21,000 low-income Brooklyn
residents, assisting them to overcome life-altering legal
challenges including family breakdowns, devastating debt,
immigration status, threatened homelessness, and ongoing
predatory practices that overwhelmingly target the poor, the
elderly, and individuals with disabilities.
At the core of the VLP’s model is the recognition that the pro bono
commitment of the private bar can be most effective and efficient
for low income people to access justice. In the past year, the
VLP trained and supervised nearly 800 attorneys, law students,
and other legal professionals, who, with the support of the VLP,
provided over 10,000 hours of high quality, compassionate
direct legal representation, advice and counsel, and community
education throughout Brooklyn.

Kennedy
With deep gratitude, the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer
Lawyers Project salutes the National Grid Foundation for
supporting the VLP’s National Grid Foundation Senior Legal
Education and Assistance Program (NGF Senior LEAP) since
1999, touching the lives of thousands of Brooklyn seniors.
Brooklyn has the largest elderly population in New York City:
over 338,000 Brooklynites are age 65 and older and about half
of this population lives at or below the 200% federal poverty
level. The National Grid Foundation’s sustaining generosity has
enabled the VLP’s NGF Senior LEAP to provide senior citizens
with community-based pro bono legal education and ongoing
advice and counsel at senior centers throughout Brooklyn’s
diverse neighborhoods, making access to the justice system
and basic human rights a reality for Brooklyn’s at risk senior
community. As a result, individuals, families, and communities
become stronger and more stable.
THE VLP GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGES ONGOING SUPPORT FOR OUR PROGRAMS FROM THE FOLLOWING INSTITUTIONS:
