“A favorable January brings us a good year” -Weather Lore
Many make a lot out of celebrating a New Year, but not all!
Mark Twain, for instance, was skeptical when he wrote that “New Year is a harmless institution,
of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drinks and
friendly calls of humbug resolutions. However Oprah Winfrey leaves it more in balance when she “Cheers a New Year and another chance for us to get it right.” The hope then is that the New Year may bring a bit of joy and happiness to every life!

Don Phipps has been chosen January Volunteer of the Month. Interested in the Siouxland Center for Active Generations Chorus, Don joined the Center in 2008. Soon after, he became a member of the Curtains Up Drama Group, becoming co-director with Lorraine Huls about two years ago. When karaoke and ping pong started at the Center, Don found his way into those new activities also; deciding long ago that he won’t be one to sit home and waste time. He is also a volunteer driver for the Meals on Wheels program, delivering meals cooked at the Center. Don commented that he enjoys the Center, especially meeting friends in the Sit & Sip Coffee Shop and has future plans of joining the painting class. Congratulations Don; enjoy your gift certificate to the Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe.

New Year Celebration
Our Multi-Purpose Room was filled to capacity on Monday, December 3rd, as we celebrated our annual Christmas Party. We would like to take this time to thank the following businesses for their donations of treats: Bickford Cottage, Casa De Paz Rehab and Healthcare Center, Countryside Senior Living, Embassy Rehab Center, Emeritus at NorthPark, Humana, Regency Square Care Center, Sunrise Retirement Community, Timber Pointe Orthopedic, Touchstone Living Center, and Whispering Creek Active Retirement Community. Northern Hills Retirement Community again donated the goody bags distributed by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Door prizes were provided by Black Bear Diner, Central Catering, Culver’s, Graham’s Grill, Milwaukee Wiener, Pickerman’s Deli, Texas Roadhouse, Thompson Dean Drug,
Walgreen’s Drug Store on Pierce Street, and numerous anonymous donors. We would also like to thank Chef Jeff, Coleen Loffswold, Spaulding School Students (for the decorated placemats), Santa Claus a.k.a. Larry Harrington and Mrs. Claus a.k.a. Rita Potter. We thank B. J. Heitzman, Lori Watts, and our Active Generations Chorus, under the direction of Colleen Mahoney and accompanied by Marijune Pollow, for the entertainment. Special thanks goes to our volunteer members...those who worked the days prior to the event and the day of the event...without you, activities such as this would not be possible. Thank you for always helping out when needed; you are greatly appreciated.
Christmas party reCognition
Thank You from the Staff A sincere thank you is offered to our many Center volunteers during this holiday season. Those of you who instruct our classes, work in our coffee or gift shops, library or meal site, sit at the front desk, help at our special events, care for the beautiful plants and facility itself, contribute to the monthly publication
of the Sunshine News, serve on our Board of Directors or assist in any other capacity here at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations...we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our Center would not be the great place it is without your help...you are the heart of our “home” and may you be blessed for all that you do.

Now that I have your attention, I would like to invite any female members who would be interested in learning more about the game of pool, to please join us in the pool room. Instructor and member, Pinky Catron, has volunteered his time on Fridays from 10:30 a.m. -noon. This would be a great opportunity for women to learn more about this sport; possibly gaining enough confidence and knowledge to get involved in a tournament at some future time. We thank Pinky (in advance) for his time.

There are two new members in the Enter 90 group for January at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations. They are Connie Spain, 1/29 and Bob Schoger, 1/18.
Connie was born in Sioux City on January 23, 1923. She has two sisters and one brother. Connie attended elementary school at Smith and later graduated from Sioux City Central High School. As a child Connie enjoyed playing ball and later played basketball on a semi-pro team for Mann’s Sporting Goods.
She continued her education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Clinton, IA. Connie served our country as a Cadet Nurse in the Navy, when the war ended she was sent back home. While working as a nurse in Clinton she met and married Francis Spain in 1945. Together the couple had six children.
Connie has many hobbies, she plays cards and golfs in leagues. Connie is most proud of being a mother to her children and the many years she has spent helping alcoholics find sobriety. Connie’s secret to living to see 90 is “Striving to help my loved
A new year will be starting when this letter comes out and all the line dancers feel so happy and fulfilled over what we have accomplished over the past one, and hope that 2013 will be just as great. We performed at many places and had a great Fall Follies performance. We have learned many new dances, brought back many old ones and have added 10 new dancers to our “family.” It seems that we’ll need to divide up and do separate and different dances as most places won’t hold all of us at one time. I really hate that, but I am so pleased we have so many who want to dance. It is so rewarding, and what a wonderful way to get the exercise that keeps us “young.” That is why we are called the Young at Heart Line Dancers!
Again, I couldn’t do what I do without the help of Arlene Held
and Lila Henke who come in early to teach extra dances,
new and old. It helps all of us to learn all of the
dances so we can keep on dancing!

It is that time again and with Christmas , it seems we are real busy in the coffee shop. Talk about Christmas, Santa Claus has already come to the coffee shop and gave us a new bright red toaster! So we must have been good this year!
The past month has had a few things happening to me. On my way for coffee with my friend one Saturday morning and I happen to glance in my mirror and realized I had a cop car behind me with the lights on….what did I do wrong? He pulled me over and it turns out I had a brake light out. (Whew!)
Have you ever opened your mouth and feel like you have put your foot
in it? Wee I have! I was talking with one of my kids about getting a bigger card
table to put a puzzle on and what do I know….a few days later here they came with a table for me!!
As I end this I want to say thank you to all that come
to the coffee shop and thank you to all the volunteers. We continue to have good days! Many Thanks-

Happy Hoofers Tap Dancers I am writing this article trying to get into the Christmas spirit---it’s not working. At this time I will just say I hope everyone had a very special Christmas and wish everyone a very Happy New Year filled with cheer, good health, good friends and all the rest. The Happy Hoofers entertained at Centennial Manor with a Christmas theme with music and costumes. It seems everyone enjoys sharing our talents and fun so if you know of a group that would like us to come to entertain, please give Jane or anyone of us a call.We are working on steps that will be in routines as soon as Jane gets the theme for next year. We are constantly being challenged with new combinations and steps as well as perfecting the old ones. It’s interesting how just changing some little arm position can make an old step
new again. We are happy to have our new people continue to work so hard to learn dances quickly so that they can join us out in the community programs.Dancing is such good all-around exercise but when you are also learning routines it becomes even more important, by exercising the mind/body combination. P.S. We now tap at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
“Dance is more than just the physical movements, think bigger than that. When you extend your arm, it doesn’t stop at the end of your fingers…the spirit f lows from them and reaches everyone watching. Dance doesn’t just show awindow to your soul, it brings inspiration to the world.”
-BJ Heitzman

Happy New Year and Happy Dancing!
We are continually expanding our knowledge of “Roundish” language. It was suggested that it should be considered a real foreign language and hopefully we will become more f luent in this New Year. We know everyone had a great holiday but now we are saddened to see some of our “angels” going south for the next few weeks. We will certainly miss them but hope to surprise them when they return with all our new knowledge of the interesting, but challenging, dance form. We tried our skill with some Christmas music, and continue to add other songs to our list of accomplishments. The waltz is beginning to be (for some of us) a favorite.
“There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good.”
Soooooo…… Shake it ’til the moon becomes the sun.

January ThawA guiding path thru drifted snow; each boot print left for one more of her majesty’s
Hip pocket held a bottle of sparking wine - too much amore? only a mere breath away from that.
Lips sharing an evening of anticipation, and moonlight for a brief suggestion. Her eyes met his, and arms locked tight, they were in the moment alright.
“Goodnights” on the way to the car - the open road teasing the senses; checking twice the gas gauge.
