Volunteering at AAP Primadomus Who are AAP and what do we do? Established in the 1970s and based in the Netherlands, AAP is a European rescue centre and sanctuary for primates and other exotic mammals. AAP houses animals from all over Europe. The animals that come to us have been confiscated, abandoned or offered by private owners. Often, as a result of illegal trade, being exhibited in illegal zoos or used in biomedical research or the entertainment industry, with many of the animals having a history of abuse and neglect. At AAP they receive the professional care needed for their physical and mental recovery. After a careful process of rehabilitation, long-term solutions are sought through outplacement. Objectives of AAP AAP’s main objectives are Rescue and Rehabilitation, Public Policy, Education and outplacement. Working for AAP requires feeling, with a non-commercial organization in general, and enhancing the wellbeing of the animals. What is AAP Primadomus? AAP's work has two locations, one in Almere, The Netherlands and the second one in Spain, called AAP Primadomus. The Rescue Center, Primadomus, is based in Villena, close to Alicante. Primadomus works as a rescue center and also offers permanent care for a large number of primates. AAP Primadomus Primadomus Lifetime Care Centre AAP Primadomus Rescue Centre is situated on 180 hectares of land, bought by AAP especially with the purpose of permanently housing groups of primates that cannot, for whatever reason, be outplaced elsewhere. Primadomus is located in a stunning natural environment, 7.5 kilometers south of the town of Villena, at the foot of the mountain chain Sierra de Salinas. In 2013 Primadomus started working as well as a rescue center, specializing in Barbary macaques and Biga Cats.

Our animals At Primadomus we house different groups of primates of several species. A group of seven chimpanzeesknown as Patrick’s group was the first group to arrive in November 2009 from our facilities in Almere.Since then, we have received groups of baboons, pig-tailed macaques, vervets and Barbary macaques,among others, plus the animals rescued from different situations such as illegal trade, ownership as pets,circuses, etc.

Apes and primates of AAP Primadomus

Role of the volunteer.You would work in close collaboration with AAP Primadomus Fundraising, Education and Communication colleagues and under their supervision and coordination. You would help in the tasks related to this area: contact with Media, helping in promoting activities, record of media material, such as photos and videos.Assists in the design of leaflets, educative panels and other materials. Assists in the social media networks maintenance and website and intranet contents and with other communication tasks, being fully involved in the day-to-day routine.

Qualifications/Experience:Ideally we are looking for volunteers who have previous experience working in Communiccations, journalism, turism, public relationship, marketing or similar, either in the non-profit or private sector. We are looking for volunteers who have an affinity with the aims and objectives of AAP Primadomus. As an international organization it is important that volunteers should have a good level of spoken and written English. Volunteers should also be able to work independently and as a team member. You must be in agreement with the foundation’s hands-off policy and have a driving license.

Support provided for volunteer positions (meals, lodging and travel to and from Villena to Primadomus)Further to the opportunity of a unique, interesting place to work, we offer free accommodation in the AAP Primadomus Villena apartment. Situated within Villena you are located in the centre of the town. The AAP flat has several bedrooms (which may or may not be shared) along with communal living areas such as living room, kitchen and bathroom. Wireless Internet is available in the house (own laptop required). You will betransported to and from work. When in the workplace you will be provided with meals and refreshments.You will also be provided with good supervision from experienced colleagues.
