Global R&D Spending Continues to Grow

(will reach $1.4 trillion in 2012)

Three countries worldwide account for more than half of global R&D:

    U.S.A. 31%, China 14%, Japan 11%

    Triple Helix Relationship

A triple helix model begins as university, industry and government enter into areciprocal relationship in which each

attempts to enhance the performance ofthe other

Each institutional sphere is thus morelikely to become a creative source of

innovation and to support theemergence of creativity that arises inother spirals

    Universities Technology Activities

Companies spun-off from university laboratories are significantdrivers of innovation

Based on 2010 AUTM Licensing Survey of 155 U.S. universities:

Universities are ranked by their ability to take world-classresearch and turn it into licensing income and businessstartups

Since 1980, U.S. universities have spun out more than 5,000startups; 2/3 of these startups are still in business.

Reporting universities now are spinning off nationally about400 startups per year.

Number of patents can be used as a measure of innovation asnearly 80% of all technological knowledge is contained in them
