Kotti (2008)
Larissa Fassler: Kotti (2008): http://vernissage.tv/blog/2010/04/25/art-cologne-2010-highlights-part-3/ --
Larissa Fassler is a Canadian artist who lives and works in Berlin. She is represented by the gallery September Berlin. At Art Cologne 2010, September presented the work Kotti (2008). After Hallesches Tor (2005) and Alexanderplatz (2006), Kotti is the third in a series of model-like structures. “Kotti is a model representation of the publicly accessible areas of the Zentrum Kreuzberg (ZK) housing estate and its surroundings. Starting once again with the act of walking I have measured this concrete housing estate as well as its front plaza and underground access tunnels in order to construct a third model-like structure that questions the impact of urban planning on communities, and conversely, the impact of communities on planning.” (Larissa Fassler)

The Ego and the IdDoris C. Freedman Plaza in Central Park New York
Public Art Fund
The Ego and the Id is internationally acclaimed artist Franz West‘s newest and largest aluminum sculpture to date. Soaring 20 feet high, the piece consists of two similar but distinct, brightly colored, looping abstract forms, one bubble gum pink and the other alternating blocks of blue, green, orange, and yellow. Each of the forms curve up at the bottom creating stools that invite passersby to stop, take a seat, and directly engage with the artwork. The sculpture is only truly complete once the viewer interacts with the work. The Ego and the Id is consistent with the artist‘s overarching desire to produce sociable environments for viewing art using his signature combination of whimsy and monumentality.
Created specifically for West‘s first comprehensive American retrospective this past fall at the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Ego and the Id borrows its name from one of Sigmund Freud‘s best known texts, in which he explores the ego‘s battle with three forces: the id, the super-ego, and the outside world. Removing the gallery walls heightens the connection between West‘s work and Freud‘s work, allowing these forces to intermingle with the streets of New York City as a backdrop.
Franz West began his career in mid-1960s Vienna during the height of a local movement called Actionism. His earliest sculptures, performances, and collages were a reaction to this movement, in which artists engaged in displays of radical public behavior intended to shake up art-world passivity. In the early 1970s, West began making a series of small, portable sculptures called „Adaptives“ („Paßstücke“). The Ego and the Id is in many ways an oversized version of an „Adaptive.“ The sculpture also directly relates to the artist‘s furniture installations, which transform galleries, museums, and public spaces into lounge-like environments. West has described the correlation between his plaster objects and furniture installations as a way to put dreams on earth; „The Adaptives would be the dream and the chairs and tables would be the Earth.“
Franz West lives and works in Vienna, where he was born in 1947. He has exhibited internationally for more than three decades in galleries and museums, and at major festivals including Documenta IX (1992) and Documenta X (1997), Kassel, Germany; Sculpture Projects in Münster (1997); and the Venice Biennale (1988, 1993, 1997, 2003, 2007). His first major American retrospective, Franz West, To Build a House You Start with the Roof: Work, 1972-2008, debuted at the Baltimore Museum of Art (2008), and then traveled to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2009). His work has been exhibited at Gagosian Gallery, New York (2008); Gagosian Gallery, London (2006); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2003); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2003); and Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2001). He had a solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1997.

Jean-Michel Basquiat Retrospective at Fondation Beyeler / Interview with Sam Keller:http://vernissage.tv/blog/2010/05/11/jean-michel-basquiat-retrospective-at-fondation-beyeler-interview-with-sam-keller/ --
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 –1988) was one of the most fascinating and controversial personalities in the art world. After starting on the New York under-ground scene as a graffiti sprayer, musician and actor, he began to devote himself to painting at nineteen. His highly expressive, energetic work soon found wide admiration. Supported by Andy Warhol, he advanced to become an internationally acclaimed star. He was the youngest Documenta participant ever, and exhibited at Art Basel, the Venice Biennale, and various famous galleries. The son of immigrants from the Caribbean, Basquiat became the first black artist to make a highlevel breakthrough. He collaborated with Keith Haring, Francisco Clemente, Debbie Harry, and many other stars. In the space of only eight years, he created an extensive oeuvre of about 1000 paintings and 2000 drawings before his tragic death at the age of only twenty-seven. To mark his fiftieth birthday, the Fondation Beyeler is devoting a large retrospective to Jean-Michel Basquiat, comprising more than 100 paintings, works on paper, and objects from renowned museums and private collections around the world. His works, populated by comic-like figures, skeletal silhouettes, curious everyday objects, and poetic slogans, are highly colorful and powerful. They blend pop culture and cultural history into critical and ironic com-mentaries on consumer society and social injustice. The exhibition brings together many of Basquiat’s major works and illustrates the development of this legendary art scene star. Renowned museums, galleries and especially private collections in Europe and America have contributed to the success of our undertaking by generous provision of loans. These include The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Musée national d’art mo-derne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Broad Art Foundation, Santa Monica, The Brant Foundation, the Daros Collection, Switzerland, The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, New York, the Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la création, the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, the Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich, the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, the Gagosian Gallery, the Galerie Jérôme de Noirmont, Paris, Lio Malca, New York, Fred Hoffman Fine Art, Enrico Navarra, The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Collection, the Mugrabi Collection, Irma and Norman Braman, Amalia Dayan and Adam Lindemann, Laurence Graff as well as John McEnroe. The exhibition was conceived by the Fondation Beyeler in collaboration with the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, where it will be on view from October 15, 2010 to January 30, 2011. It has enjoyed the support of The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat in New York and the artist’s major dealers and collectors. Curators and catalogue editors are Dieter Buchhart and Sam Keller.
