Dear Parents and Students

It is my pleasure to offer a very warm welcome back to school to all students and parents, and an especially warm welcome to all of the new members of our school community. I hope that new families are starting to feel settled and that you have all felt warmly welcomed and supported throughout the application process and your move to our school. I also hope that everyone enjoyed the summer break and feels well rested and ready for the busy year ahead.

I wish to start this year and the first edition of Blaze by sharing one of our school-wide goals for the year that affects each and every member of our community. I encourage you to discuss this goal (which focuses on principled conduct) with your children, and to model for them your own commitment to this values statement about the kind of community that we represent.

‘IST community members are principled. Our decisions and actions are distinguished by honesty, integrity and fairness, and presume positive intent’.

Welcome Back to School Events! As part of our annual community orientation programme, our school hosts a series of events over the first two to three weeks that provide an opportunity for parents to learn more about our school and its programmes, to meet their children’s teachers, and equally importantly, to meet one another. Outstanding IB Diploma Examination ResultsI am delighted to report to our community that once again IST students have achieved exceptionally well in the IB Diploma final examinations. 34 of the 36 IB Diploma students in the Class of 2019 were awarded the full IB Diploma (a 94% pass rate versus a world average of 77%), scoring an average 35 points, or more than 5 points above the world average. I am also very proud to share the quite exceptional news that two of our students – the two Valedictorians for the Class of 2019– scored perfect 45 point diplomas. Congratulations to Hye In Ra and Taylor Moody on their outstanding achievement, and to the entire Class of 2019 on their examination success!

School IDsEarlier this week I wrote to outline our plan to introduce a new electronic monitoring system for adults entering and departing our campus. Although the system will not come on line for another couple of weeks, today we sent home new RFID reader cards for all parents which are to replace the old ones, effective Monday morning. From Monday any parent not wearing the new card will need to register as a visitor.

Please note that all adults must wear an IST ID at all times when on campus. Parents, and their drivers, are invited to pop into the main school office in the Han building to register and have photographs taken if they did have not done so already. Please note that an RMB 200 deposit is required for the issuance of a Driver ID.

Please also note that only IST parents are entitled to enter school buildings; drivers are required to wait outside (the only exception applies to the drivers of Nursery/Pre-Kindergarten students).

IST PublicationsAll new families should have by now received a welcome packet containing a hard copy of the Parent-Student Handbook, and all families should have received a hard copy of the annual Academic Calendar. The 2018-19 yearbook ‘The InternationalIST’, is also available for collection for any children whose family departed for the summer before the last day of school and who may therefore not yet have received their copy. The 2018-19 yearbook can also be viewed electronically at the following link: http://issuu.com/internationalschooloftianjin/docs/yearbook_2018-19_for_online

The school’s events calendar and handbooks are also posted on the school website as PDFs for your convenience. Returning parents can also be issued hard copies of the Parent-Student Handbook upon request. Please contact the school office if you did not receive your copies.

Summer RenovationsMost parents will be aware that the Board of Governors approves a series of facility improvements each summer, and this past summer three major projects were undertaken: a full renovation of the Han Theatre, an upgrade to the NPK outdoor play area, and a new (temporary) entrance to the school on Weishan Lu. I am sure that you will have noticed the new entrance, and likely also noticed that it is not quite finished just due to delays caused by the recent heavy rains. However, all going well we everything should be completed no later than next week.

The new school year is an exciting time for us all, but it can also be a rather stressful one for children and their families – and especially so for those who are new to our school and to Tianjin. We understand these stresses and encourage all families to maintain close contact with the school to ensure that the needs of your family are understood and so that your transition is as smooth and positive as possible.

Again, it is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the new school year. Please remember that our doors are always open.

With warm regards

IST Library & Information Literacy Center

Our Mission

The IST Library is a friendly place where our community is inspired and challenged to think critically, read widely, act ethically, value creativity, and defend the right to access information.

Welcome back IST The library is already a busy place. Daily activities we observe are reading, coloring, game playing, and studying. Students have also been visiting with classes. We love being the center of the school and a place where students can come to enjoy a book, a quiet place to work, or some off time with friends.

IMPORTANT: Summer Holiday Books

Please make sure to return Summer holiday books. Students will not be allowed to check out books until their summer holiday books are returned. If students have them at home, please help them remember to bring books back to the library. Thank you! Parent Volunteers

Thank you to those parents whom have offered to help in the library this year. We are very happy to have you assist in continuing to make our library environment friendly, inviting, and organized. Parent Book Club – Resuming Wed, Sept. 11th at 10am.

Parents are invited to join our Parent Book Club. Each month we read a book and get together to discuss it. Our next book is The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine. The library has one copy in English and one in Chinese. Come along to have great discussion, coffee/tea, and a sweet treat. Even if you have not had the opportunity to read the book, you are still welcome to join!

As always, Happy Reading!

Activities A very warm welcome to the 2019-20 school year from the Activities and Athletics Office!

Thank you to everyone for your patience with the introduction of our new CCA registration platform, SchoolsBuddy.

An activation link from SchoolsBuddy was sent to your personal email account (IST account for Secondary students). Please check your spam/junk folder or email Ms. Guo Ying ([email protected]) if you did not receive an activation link.

Online registration for season one commenced Monday, August 12th and will close on Sunday, August 18th at 8pm. You can edit your registration requests until this time.

Parents will receive email confirmation regarding successful activity placement Thursday, August 22nd.

You may wish to download the SchoolsBuddy app for mobile. This will help you easily track your information and receive updates throughout the school year. Andriod users will have to access the app through GooglePlay (and need a Google account). Apple users can locate the app in the Apple Store. Access is available to all users through any browser via the SchoolsBuddy website.

Season one dates: Monday, August 26th to Friday, November 1st.

Thank you for your interest and commitment to the IST Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Program. We look forward to working with you throughout the year to provide a memorable year of activities for our IST students!

Athletics:

Our first Athletics season offers High School Volleyball and Middle School Football and Badminton. All Middle School students are reminded to register for sport via the link shared to their IST email account. Practices commence the week of Monday, August 19th. Students registered with an Athletics team for season one will receive a schedule at their first practice.

High School Volleyball practices run every Monday and Friday. Middle School Football practices run every Tuesday and Thursday. Middle School Badminton practices run every Wednesday and Thursday. Please be sure to review the season schedule with your child to minimize conflict in availability and attendance. Students taking part in the Musical Production or MUN may still take part in season one sport.

A final reminder from the PE office. Please ensure your child is equipped with appropriate uniform for PE. This includes an IST PE uniform (all students from K-12 should have two shirts for hygienic purpose) and athletic shoes. Thank you for your understanding.

Best wishes to all IST students in their CCA and Athletic endeavors this year!

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

MS/HS food offer

A retail concept oriented environment as MS/HS students

are young adults who need choices, brands/concepts and

freedom in deciding the composition of their lunch.

We propose a different service concept that blends and

merges the “A la Carte “and “Set Menu” offers

into one single frame.

Students will have several stations to choose from, each

station serving daily dishes bound into a concept

(e.g. Grill, Wok, Western, and Asian, etc.). As such,

each customer can chose between paying the basic fare

for the main dish (A la Carte) or upgrading the chosen

main dish into a Set Menu or a Deal price lower than the

sum of the different components. The upgrade allows a

drink + dessert or Fruit + salad or Soup in a separate plate.

Examples:

Chicken curry + Rice

22 RMB

Upgrade 10RMB

(Drink + salad or soup + Fruit

or Dessert)

Set Menu Deal 32 RMB
