Since late Tuesdayafternoon, the North-ern Islands were on a

red alert (the highest levelalert) due to the passage ofstrong swells from thenorth generated by a strongtropical storm evolving2,500 kilomoeters north ofthe Lesser Antilles. Thealert was in response tolarger swells than tradition-al, but also due to the pos-sible high seas during East-er week when the localpopulation traditionallycamps out on the island’sbeaches with their familiesand friends. The high alertshould be removed on Fri-day, March 21, as the highseas return to normal by thebeginning of next week. As expected, the swells hitthe shores during the nightof Tuesday to Wednesday, with the largest waves onthe more exposed Northerncoastline. On Wednesday,on the beach in Public, campers were able to createlevees in the sand to protecttheir campsites but weren’tsure if that would suffice tohold back big waves if theyarrived. In Saint Jean, asection of the deck at NikkiBeach was torn off due tothe force of the waves, andthe beach from Eden Rock

to the airport looked morelike a beach in Brittanywith waves breaking on therocks. But what called themost attention was the bigwave hitting the port ofGustavia, near thePresqu’île Hotel. LateWednesday morning whenwe went to press, theweather forecast was forstrengthening of the swells, with waves as high as 15feet, during the night fromWednesday to Thursday.

Exceptional MeasuresAn exceptional phenome-non: exceptional measures. As of Tuesday afternoon, swimming as well as allother nautical activitieswere forbidden. The port of

Gustavia was closed to allnavigation as of Wednes-day at noon. Before clos-ing, all of the motor yachtsand sailboats at any of thefour docks all moved out toanchor in the harbor to sur-er moorings. Inter-islandferries were suspendedwhen the port closed. Atthe same time, the island’s

water plant closed its doorsas well, and the intakeducts from the ocean wereclosed to avoid infiltrationof sand into the system.Everything will reopenonce the swells have sub-sided, but in the meantimethe island’s surfers aremaking the best of thisexceptional situation.

Often criticized forbeing a closed, orprivate, event in

many eyes, the Saint BarthBucket—celebrating its13th edition March 27-30,2008—is a major event forthe island. Unquestionably,it is an event with majoreconomic impact, and itcommunicates the image ofluxury and excellence thatis important for the island asa tourist destination. In theoutside world, the Bucket isconsidered one of mosthigh-quality nautical eventsof the year, yet ironically itis not really understood onthe island. To get a betteridea of its importance, wemet with Melanie Smith, the local organizer of theBucket, to go behind thescenes of the event. Anevent unique unto itself!

Size Of The Fleet“There will finally be 29boats on the starting line forthis 13th edition,” explainsSmith. “There were origi-nally more that were inter-ested but we had to open awaiting list in order torespect the limit of 30 boatsthat was established duringthe 10th edition. In the endthere were some cancella-tions so the final fleet has29 boats. We estimate thatthere are 800 people whocome to the island especial-ly for the Bucket. There arecrew members that evencome from New Zealand, aswell as owners of the bestboatyards specializing inlarge sailing yachts whocome as sponsors of the

event. There are journalistsand photographers whocover the event for thebiggest sailing magazines,as well as nautical architectsincluding those for the Mal-tese Falcon, Athena, Rebec-ca, Perseus, Ranger, andothers. There are the ownersof the largest nautical equip-ment companies that servethe yacht industry, as wellas insurers and financiers. They number at least 800without counting those whoschedule their vacations orbring their boats in order towatch th magnificent spec-tacle offered by these giantsof the sea.”

An AutonomousRegatta

“The Collectivity of SaintBarth is an important part-ner for this event. It pro-vides the services of theport and all of the necessarysupport to make such alarge event possible. But incontrast to the Transat Ag2r,which receives 100,000euros from the Collectivity,or the New Year’s EveRegatta, where the Collec-tivity is responsible for theawards ceremony andchampagne toast, the Buck-et is self-financing. It doesnot get, or ask for, anydonations. The organizershandle the overall costs ofthe race, from the installa-tion of the tents to the petit-fours, by way of variousevents, and the securityservices needed in order tohost this kind of boats andtheir passengers. The boats that participatepay, in addition to other

fees, the cost of docking atthe main quay for four daysor for anchoring in the har-bor for those boats too largeto pull up to the dock. Theydo not have special or pref-erential tariffs, even thoughthe event attracts additionalboats. In other words: theSaint Barth Bucket is entire-ly self-financed, supportedby the organizers, the spon-sors, and the participants,”explains Smith.

The Event ThatGenerates The Largest

Economic Impact“The organizers like Saint-Barth, its quality of life, andare perfectly aware that theevent must have a majoreconomic effect on theisland. As far as that goes, ifone believes the membersof the hotel or restaurantassociation, the Saint BarthBucket is the event that gen-erates the most income. Theorganizers of the Bucketalone inject several hundredmillion euros into the localeconomy in terms of suppli-ers, caterers, and servicesrequired for the organiza-tion of the event. Several

hundred hotel rooms andvillas are rented in order tohouse all the participantsand their friends and fami-lies. The official socialevents for the Bucket areprogrammed to end no laterthat 9pm so that the 800people of the Bucket canhave dinner in variousrestaurants, and go to thebars and nightclubs on theisland.”

A Charitable Regatta “Every year the organizersdonate between 3,000 and7,000 euros to the SaintBarth Yacht Club to help thedevelopment of sailing inSaint Barthélemy. This year, they will also make a dona-tion to the SNSM rescuestation, whose new boatwill provide safety servicesduring the Bucket. In col-laboration with other part-ners, they will also organizea collection of funds fromthe participants of the Buck-et. These monies will bedonated to FEMUR, SaintBarth’s Foundation forEmergency Medical Equip-ment, which is marking its25th anniversary in 2008.”

Why The BucketIs Important

For The Island

You don’t have to be clubaddicts to have heard of thetwo star DJs who were at the

turntables on Friday night, March 14,at the Yacht Club and again on Sun-day, March 15 at the Manapanybrunch. The first is DJ Ravin, residentDJ at the Buddha-bar, and creator offive of the 10 Buddha-bar compila-tion CDs, of which the most recent,Buddha-bar X, came out on February18. The second DJ is Carlos Campos, resident DJ at Barrio Latino, who is

preparing his ninth compilation forthis Parisian temple of Latino music.Carole Gruson and the Manapanyorganized this exceptional event, incollaboration with Segeco. Yet it isJacques Dumas who began the trendof bringing the hottest DJs from theParis scene, the world reference forthis art. Part of the Maurice family andbrought up in the Hindu tradition, 41year-old DJ Ravin has mixed Indiansounds and mantras into the 14 com-pilations he has done to date. Livingin France since he was a teenager, hefirst started mixing on the turntablesat Buddha-bar in 1997, where he iscurrently the resident DJ. After Bud-dha-bar X, a blend of world and elec-tronic music, he plans to bring outthree new albums in 2008: in April

the double CD, Clubbing In Paris, will be followed by volume 4 of Sid-dhartha: Spirit of Buddha-bar, andhis first personal album in themonths to come. Carlos Campos is originally fromChile. A hip-hop and street dancer,as well as choreographer, and soundengineer, this multi-faceted artistowes his international reputation tothe hit “Ritmo de la Noche.” Thefirst resident DJ Barrio Latino in1999, Carlos has made all the com-pilation CDs for the club, and themost recent, his ninth, will bereleased sometime in 2008. This isthe third time he has come to SaintBarth at the invitation of JacquesDumas, who has invited both Com-pas and Ravin back for a “big mix”in November at Thanksgiving time.

Converted into a “school,” tak-ing students from the Dan-deryd Maritime Center near

Stockholm in Sweden on transatlanticvoyages, Alva has a colorful history. In days of yore, this schooner withthree masts—which sailed into SaintBarth from March 11-13— was a car-go ship transporting freight through-out the Baltic Sea and NorthernAtlantic. It was the last sailing cargoship in Europe to stop working..... in1990! After 50 years of loyal service,Alva was converted into a charterboat, with excursions through themore than 2,400 isalnds in the archi-pelago of Stockholm. It has beencompletely remodeled with 25’ addedto its hull, with a total of 15 cabins(plus those for the crew), and on theupper deck, an immense salon, diningroom and kitchen that were added tocomfortably serve the passengers. The masts were shortened to 18’ topass under bridges, and the sails aresmaller, but still measure 500 squareyards. In 2003, Alva joined the fleetat the maritime center in Danderydand has since been used for variouslength educational trips. All of thestudents at this private maritime highschool—where a love of the sea is amust—spend at least two monthsaboard Alva as crew, as part of theirthree-year curriculum. In addition totheir daily courses, they take on allthe jobs of a crewmember, fromswabbing the deck to KP duty. The 32 students in the marine biology

department (which is just one of sev-eral areas of study) who were aboardduring the visit to Saint Barth, arrivedin Sint Maarten on Saturday, March8. They then sailed to Saint Barth, thefirst stop on their voyage. Thanks toASBAS (Saint Barth Friends of Swe-den Association) they were able toobserve the behavior of local fauna inthe waves off the coast of GrandFond. On Thursday they headed toBarbuda, and planned to go on to vis-it the volcanic eruption zone open tothe public in Montserrat before goingto Guadeloupe, Nevis, and SaintEustatius, before returning to St. Mar-tin for final provisioning before theirtransatlantic trip to Europe. Two finalstops were scheduled in the Azores:Faial Island and Sao Miguel, beforearriving at the final destination oftheir six week journey— they shouldland in Cherbourg, France on May

20. There, the students from the‘Communications and leadership’section at Danderyd pick up the relayfor the last next transatlantic chapterin the story of Alva, a boat that hasbeen plying the seas since 1939.

From March 21-27, thework of Illya Kagancan be seen in an

exhibit of his paintings ofSaint Barth at Porta 34Gallery in Gustavia. Basedin Nantucket, this painter(with roots in the Ukraine)has been coming to Saint-Barth for over 35 years, since he was just six yearsold. The oil-on-linen canvas-es in the exhibit show theisland from various vantagepoints. One thing that is spe-cial about these paintings isthe wonderful use light— orlack thereof for those paint-ed after the sun has set– thatemanates from them. Thereis nothing surprising aboutthat; when asked whatinspired him in Saint Barth,Kagan answered, “the varia-tions in the light, and thecolors of the water. Com-pared to the monochromaticgreen, or white in the winter,of Nantucket, to come here, even for a visiting painterlike myself, is like a newawakening.”

Between his visits to SaintBarth, Illya Kagan splits histime between his home basein Nantucket, and all the“great spots” in the worldwhere he is inspired to paint. His work is “alive” as healways works “in the freshair,” looking at the land-scape he is painting. He esti-mates he has done 75 paint-ings here to date. He hasalso painted extensively inNantucket, New York,Aspen, Tuscany, and theSouth of France, where hefollowed the trail of thegreat Fauvist painters, VanGogh and Cezanne, whosestrong influence can be feltin Kagan’s work. Vision ofthe Island is Kagan’s sev-enth exhibit in Saint Barth, with an opening receptionon Friday, March 21 from6:00-9:00pm.

It was very welcomenews! Thursdayevening, during a

meeting of the island’s ter-ritorial council, the presi-dent of the COMannounced that the schoolboard plans to add a 10thgrade class in Saint Barthnext fall. Before theassembly, Bruno Magrasread a letter from AlainMiossec , and indicatedthat the COM would beinterested in this eventual-ity. The academic directorplans to visit the island onApril 16 in order to makeit official and work out thedetails of adding a new

grade and class to the cur-riculum at the MireilleChoisy junior high school. The class should hold 30students, allowing almostall of those currently inthe 9th grade to continueif they so desire. The idea to add this classis not a new one: the for-mer academic director,Jean-Pierre Chardon, hadbrought it up in 2003, yetdiscussion was tabled atthat time and was justrecently put back on thefront burner. Is this a firststep toward a full highschool in Saint Barth? One can always hope.....
