WAN Connectivity for an ISP Client: One of the Service Providers based in Chennai, who provides Internet services in rural areas covering Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Customer's Requirement: The Chennai based ISP is connected across the country using SIFY's VPN network. The ISP wanted to drive Internet bandwidth to its 15 POP locations and was looking for high-performance routers, which will be placed at the POP locations. The Internet bandwidth will be terminated at the POP location router through a 2 Mbps leased line. The Router should be SNMP manageable and should support routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP apart from RIP and Static Routes. Since the services are going be more on rural areas, the ISP was looking for a product, which will ensure swift ROI. Dax Solution: Dax suggested DX-1600 Router for the POPs, which is a high-speed, 2 slot modular WAN router, which meets the specifications of the ISP.

WAN Connectivity for an ISP Client: One of the Service Providers based in Chennai, who provides Internet services in rural areas covering Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Customer's Requirement:

The Chennai based ISP is connected across the country using SIFY's VPN network.

Product adaptability with the ISP's network:

The ISP had tested the compatibility of DX-1600 routers working with Cisco head end routers at the central site ISP end. Implementation of BGP routing on the DX-1600 routers was tested out. All the functional tests, reliability tests were carried out successfully.

Challenges during Implementation:

In addition to being compatible with industry standard Network Management Software (NMS) like HP Openview, DX-1600 router was required to be compatible with Linux based NMS software, which was customized for the ISP's network by Sygnet who is the NMS vendor. This was a challenge, as software integration outside the hardware is less relevant to the Router vendor and calls for expertise not just in Routers, but the complete WAN setup as such. Our Principal's R & D team was involved alongside our technical support team towards this special customisation. This meant that it had to be a firmware change in the form of incorporating certain specific MIB files, which was promptly highlighted by our technical support team, after studying the setup completely. Once done, it was successfully integrated with the NMS used by the ISP. The special firmware was loaded in the Routers being deployed at POP locations of the ISP.

Key benefits articulated by the customer:

With the help of DX-1600 WAN Routers, the ISP could manage both the LAN & WAN links through their NMS software and did not have to effect any change in their existing setup. What more, the ISP reaped the benefits of associating with a complete Network Solution Vendor like Dax, who could study the entire setup and integrate the most appropriate and cost-competitive solution. After successful testing, the ISP has implemented Dax DX-1600 solution in 15 POP locations plus one more in Chennai (Central Site) out of the 100 locations planned for this year. These 15 POP locations are online since integration. The modularity of DX-1600 Routers meant that the POP locations can always upgrade to a second WAN link or ISDN back -up by just adding the required module and continue to work with the existing Router. With a cost-competitive pricing edge, the ISP is assured of a quick ROI, which would hv not been possible with many other vendors. In addition, the comprehensive 3 years warranty ensured total peace of mind.
