Project StatusProject Complete

Year of InceptionThe stadium construction started in June 2009 and was completed in January 2011. The mammoth kind of structural and civil work, right from its foundation including piling and large basement was executed in just 15 months time.

Estimated Cost of Project The Approximated Estimated Cost of Project was 250 Crores Plus.

What makes the Project Eligible for an Engineering Excellence award 2013

It is like a dream project coming into a reality in view of the mammoth quantum of work to be executed to the International Stadium standards laid down by ICC (an International Body) in a very limited time span of just 15 months.

Getting space to live in Mumbai itself is a very difficult task. Getting space for a Cricket stadium was a remote possibility. The only option was to construct a new stadium at the same place, with desired enhanced seating capacity, most modern and up to date amenities.

The working space was very limited (with Railwaly line & an existing Stadium on two sides & residential zone on balance two sides). There no possibility of getting any additional space, hence it was a tight site from working and maneuvering point of view. Thus, stands on two sides (North & South) were newly constructed whereas the East & West stands were renovated.

At a given moment there were number of activities going on in the limited area posing a challenge in movement of trucks, cranes, material etc. Further, since all the activities were interdependent the work progress use to get hampered once an agency fail to deliver in stipulated time schedule. Refer Photograph 4 showing various site happening at the project site.

Photograph 4 Various site activity co ordination was required.

It was a real challenge during last 4 - 5 months, when the working area further reduced to half as MCA insisted that the pitch and surrounding area should be handed over to other agency for preparation of pitch and ground. Refer Photograph 4 showing various site happening at the project site.

Various Construction activities happening at the same time.

5 Points which makes this Project Innovative (Breakthrough / applied) …..

The structural design was complex and intricate as it involved –

i) The 25 meter ( @ 80 ‘) cantilevered roof is the most interesting feature of theproposed stadium. It completely opens up the stands as no columns / or an

obstruction or support come in the way of viewers. Refer Photograph 6 showing Structural Steel work in progress for the Roof Truss members.

Photograph 6 Structural Steel work in progress for the Roof Truss members.

ii) Heavy column sections extending beyond the top edge of the stadium and each unit weighing in tonnes were fabricated out of 3 tubular hollow pipes in a triangular profile fabricated out of various diameter MS pipes. Designing of the 25 m cantilever and its supporting system was a real challenge.

iii) There was a need of creating a world class cricket stadium & an opportunity knocked the door with the Word cup championship in year 2011. A Stiff & Steep task of constructing Wankhede stadium was in terms of Co-ordination of various activities, fighting against the time.

iv) The Stadium is located in a very much restricted, sensitive zone with lot many constraints. During construction, the list of challenges was unending viz. adhering traffic and other local regulations, congested area of the city, restricted entry points to the Stadium, inadequate carriage ways for movement of heavy vehicles, construction material, intermediate heavy monsoon pours making the ground filthy posing more problems during work execution.

v) Inspection and quality checks for the structural steel inspection, fabrication and erection work was undertaken implementing stringent QAP (Quality Assurance Plan) and ITP (Itemized testing plan) norms witnessed by an expert third party inspecting agency at various locations. First, at the factory, to check quality of material received. Then, in the second stage at the fabrication yard for testing quality of weld and joints and lastly, on at the site. Refer Photograph 8 showing Heavy Structural Steel Column received at site from the fabrication yard.

5 Points on the Operational Excellence of the Project (Time, Cost & Others)

i) Out of the two parameters viz. Time & Cost, completing of the stadium in time was more in focus in view of the international repute, though cost aspect was monitored regularly, still was secondary. ii) Wankhede Stadium has all the in-house facilities including the IT related aspects at par with world standards for conducting international matches.

ii) The structural design is carried out taking into account the composite action of the columns for earthquake resistance. Encasing of structural steel impart fire resistance to the columns. Other exposed area is fire protected making use of appropriate fire protection material. Thus, exposed area of steel and fire protection to the same added to the cost.

iv) The major hurdle was to accommodate proposed, new stadium within same old space and congested locality. It had no possibility of any horizontal expansion. In view of these constraints, the East & West stands were renovated, structurally strengthened to cater to enhanced spectator capacity. Existing columns were jacketed and extended till required height.

v) Mumbai has been the birth place for players of an international repute viz. Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Mankad, Hazare and many others. It’s the “Mecca” of Indian Cricket and it’s a fortune that we could have such an well equipped Stadium with every amenity that is thought of, in order to help the game of Cricket prosper.

5 Points on as how this Project has added to the Self Reliance of India in the Chosen Sector.

i) India is currently a top ranked country in ICC Ranking, in all three segments of Cricket and would strive to retain the top notch position.

ii) Availability of such a facility in Mumbai, would not only encourage the Game of Cricket, but also give immense pleasure to Cricket lovers watching matches in a modern environments & venues like the ‘Wankhede Stadium’, in India.

iii) Our capabilities of creating such an important & iconic structure in short span was very much appreciated and admired by the entire Cricket playing nations and it is a feather in the cap.

iv) Construction of Wankhede Stadium had raised the benchmark in India for other Stadiums to be constructed in future. The various important features of the stadium are 360 degree uninterrupted view, column free spectator stands, covered roofing using fabric material (rather than use of cancerous material which was being used in the past) wide enough walk ways, specious seating arrangement, dedicated elevators for physically challenged people and high security for players and up dated surveillance system etc.

v) The spectacular view of ‘Queen’s Necklace’ at the Marine Drive, location of the stadium at the Sea and an appealing look of the Stadium is an USP of Wankhede Stadium. Refer Photograph 9 below, with intended architectural look of Wankhede Stadium.

5 Key Impacts the Project has made

i) The Wankhede stadium has put India in the list of countries having an International standard Cricket Stadium.

ii) BCCI has stood to the challenge and showed it to the worlds that it has all the capabilities & expertise, & is elf reliant as far as construction of such World class stadiums is concern. That how the World Cup Final was held at Wankhede Stadium in April, 2011.

iii) At Wankhede Stadium, the entire project team was from India, is now a Landmark structure in this category & we Indians could prove the world that our Architects and Consultants are equally talented and have capabilities to create such a structure.

iv) We could also prove that we have world class ground curators in India who can prepare and maintain international standard Cricket pitches.

v) The Stadium shall be Good Revenue generation source for India once various

international matched are played at Wankhede Stadium.

5 Points Illumines more on the Future Readiness of the Project.

i) Creating of such a high class stadium in India shall provide an uninterrupted Opportunity to our Cricket Hero’s and Budding Cricketers to excel their skill in this segment of Sport in further.

ii) Column free stadium is an International concept, now followed in India in construction of Wankhede Stadium. The 360 degree view during a match give immense pleasure to the viewers is an USP of Wankhede Stadium.

iii) Construction of more similar kind of Stadiums in India would help in development of the immensely loved and popular Game of Cricket, increasing passion towards it in our Country.

iv) Aesthetically appealing roof cover out of textile fabric has given an opening to new industries manufacturing Textile fabric thereby helping in economical growth of India.

v) The new concept of auctioning of spectators box, modern corporate lounges to the various businesses has begun and there is long way for further improvisation from revenue generation point of view in India.
