What is Matter??

• Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.

Everything in the universe is made up of some type of matter

Matter and Volume • The amount of space taken up by an object is known as the

object’s volume.Two things cannot share the same space because of their

volumesLiquid volume- measured in Liters (L) and Milliliters (mL);

measured with a graduated cylinder by the meniscus (curve at the surface of a liquid)

Volume of regular shaped object=measured in cm3 or m3 (l x w x h)Volume of irregular shaped object=measured by amount of water displaced

Matter and Mass

• Mass is the amount of matter in an object.• The mass of an object is the same no matter

where in the universe the object is located.• The only way to change the mass of an object

is to change the amount of matter that makes up the object.

Mass or Weight?

• Mass and weight are not the same thing!• Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an objectmass is measured in kg (SI unit), g, or mg using a balance• Weight is a measure of the gravitational force exerted

on an object.An object’s weight can change depending on its location in the universe.weight is measured in N (SI unit) using a spring scale
