Das Projekt „Sustainable Bonn“ wurde im Jahr 2006 von der StadtBonn in Zusammenarbeit mit der Tourismus & Congress GmbHRegion Bonn / Rhein-Sieg / Ahrweiler (T&C) initiiert. Ziel des Projek tesist es Bonn als Konferenzstandort der Nachhaltigkeit zu etablieren.Nachhaltigkeit soll zukünftig nicht nur das zentrale Thema vielerKonferenzen sein, sondern in Alltag und Wirtschaft gelebt werden.
Finanziell gefördert wird das Projekt vom Bundesministerium fürwirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung. Des Weiteren wirddas Projekt von der Kooperationsgemeinschaft „Sustainable BonnPartners“ unterstützt, die Bonn als nachhaltigen Konferenzstandortstärken möchte.
Die Umsetzung und Durchführung von „Sustainable Bonn“ erfolgtdurch die T&C. Aufgrund ihrer Nähe zu Hotel- und Gastronomie be -trieben sowie Kongressveranstaltern und Cateringfirmen bietet dieT&C die ideale Plattform für einen konstruktiven Austausch mit die-sen Branchen.
Fachlich unterstützt wird „Sustainable Bonn“ von der BeratungsfirmaArqum und der Energieagentur NRW.
„Sustainable Bonn“ richtet sich in erster Linie an die Hotellerie, dasCatering- und Konferenzwesen in Bonn und fördert die praxisnaheVerankerung des Prinzips der Nachhaltigkeit mit den Schwer punk ten:
Ökologie: Einsatz von Umwelttechnik und Reduzierung des Verbrauchs an Ressourcen,
Ökonomie: Senkung der Betriebskosten und Einsatz von innovativen Technologien,
Soziales: Erhaltung/Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen und Mitarbeitermotivation
Mit „Sustainable Bonn“ – Konferenzort der Nachhaltigkeit wird durcheine Verbesserung der nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsweise ein effektiverBeitrag zur Umweltentlastung geleistet, soziale Aspekte berücksich-tigt und gleichzeitig wirtschaftlicher Erfolg erzielt.
Insgesamt wird bei den Teilnehmern ein Bewusstsein für die Erfor der-nisse einer weltweit nachhaltigen Entwicklung geschaffen.
„Sustainable Bonn“ ermöglicht bzw. vereinfacht den Einstieg in eineSystematisierung der nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsweise und schafft dieGrundlagen für die Einführung eines Umweltmanagementsystemsim Betrieb.
Der englische Name „Sustainable Bonn“, zu Deutsch „nachhaltigesBonn“, wurde gewählt, da die Initiative für internationale Besucheraus aller Welt zum Begriff und Markenzeichen werden soll.

The project “Sustainable Bonn” was initiated in 2006 by the Cityof Bonn in cooperation with Tourismus & Congress GmbHRegion Bonn / Rhein-Sieg / Ahrweiler (T & C). The purpose of theproject is to position Bonn as conference location of sustainability. Sustai nability is not simply to be the key topic of many confe-rences, but is to be practiced in everyday life and in business andindustry.
Financial assistance to the project was granted by the FederalMinistry for Economic Co-operation and Development. The projectis also supported by a co-operation group, “Sustainable BonnPartners”, with the aim of strengthening Bonn as a conferencelocation of sustainability.
Implementation and management are in the hands of T&C. Dueto its close relations with hotel and restaurant operators as well ascongress organisers and caterers T&C is an ideal platform for aconstructive interchange with these sectors.
Professional support is provided by Arqum Consulting and Energie-Agentur. NRW (Energy Agency Northrhine-Westfalia).
„Sustainable Bonn“ is primarily meant for the hotel, catering andconference trades and aims to establish in daily practice the prin-ciple of sustainability with the emphasis on:
Ecology: employing environmental technologies andreducing consumption of resources,
Economy: diminishing operating costs and employinginnovative technologies,
Human Resources: saving/creating jobs and motivatingemployees.
By enhancing sustainability in business operations, ”SustainableBonn – Conference Location of Sustainability” makes an effectivecontribution to improving the environment, embraces social aspectsand, at the same time, is conducive to business success.
All in all, participants develop an awareness of the requirementsof global sustainable development.
Moreover, a network of politics, business, science, media and cul-ture comes into being which facilitates, or simplifies, the first stepsinto a systematic approach to sustainable business operationsand creates the foundations for introducing an in-company environ-ment management system.
The purpose of choosing the English label “Sustainable Bonn” isto make this initiative an established concept and a trademark forvisitors from all over the world.

Als Konferenzort steht Bonn für drän-gende Nachhaltigkeitsthemen von Klima bis biologische Vielfalt.
Gerade im Umfeld großer Konferenzen liegen vielfältige Potenzialefür nachhaltigeres und faires Handeln. Seit 2006 gibt es deshalb dasvon der Stadt Bonn initiierte und vom Bundesministerium für wirt-schaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung unterstützte Projekt„Sustainable Bonn – Konferenzort der Nachhaltigkeit“ unter demDach der Tourismus & Congress GmbH.
Nach dem Erfolg der ersten beiden Projektphasen wurden in diesemJahr weitere neun Betriebe aus dem Konferenzsektor – Hotels, Catererund Veranstaltungsstätten – mit dem Signet „Partner of SustainableBonn“ ausgezeichnet. Besonders freue ich mich aber, dass sich diePilotbetriebe aus dem Jahr 2006 erfolgreich einer erneuten Prüfungstellten. Ich bin stolz auf diese 30 Partner-Betriebe, die sich gemein-sam mit der Stadt Bonn und vielen der hier ansässigen Akteure füreine nachhaltige Ent wick lung in der Konferenzbranche stark machen.Dies ist nicht nur bei großen internationalen Konferenzen wie derdiesjährigen UNO-Vertragsstaatenkonferenz zur biologischenVielfalt wohltuend sicht bar, sondern wird mehr und mehr zu eineminhaltlichen Qualitäts merkmal, das unseren Standort auszeichnet.

“UNO in Bonn – Supporting Sustainable Development Worldwide” –this United Nations motto at the UN Campus characterises the loca-tion and a multilayered network of players in the environment and deve-lopment fields. As a conference location, Bonn is synonymous withpressing sustainability topics – from climate to biological diversity.
Precisely in the area of major conferences there are many and variedopportunities for more sustainable and fair measures. This is why, ini ti -ated by the City of Bonn and supported by the German Federal Ministryfor Economic Co-operation and Development, the project “Sustain ableBonn – Conference Location of Sustainability” has been in existencesince 2006 under the umbrella of Tourismus & Congress GmbH.
Following the success of the first two project phases, nine more esta-blishments from the conference sector – hotels, caterer and eventvenues – have been distinguished with the “Partner of SustainableBonn” seal this year. However, I am particularly delighted that the pilotestablishments from 2006 underwent renewed examination with suc-cess. I am proud of these 30 partner establishments which, togetherwith the City of Bonn and many of the players based here, are standingup for sustainable development in the conference industry. This is notonly having a visibly beneficial effect at major international conferencessuch as this year’s UN member states’ conference on biological diver-sity, but is increasingly turning into an inherent quality feature thatmakes our location stand out.

In addition to participant numbers, growing year on year, the rangeof establishments is also continuing to grow, thus confirming tous that sustainability in the various areas and industries is acquiringever-greater importance.
Projektablauf
Im Rahmen des Projektes nehmen die Betriebe an vier Workshops teil,in denen die Teilnehmer bezüglich nachhaltigkeitsrelevanter Aspekteund deren praxisnaher Umsetzung geschult werden. Besonderer Fokusliegt hier auf den Bereichen Energie, Wasser, Abfall, Mobilitäts mana ge -ment, Mitarbeitermotivation und Beschaffung unter Berücksichtigungvon Nachhaltigkeitskriterien. Um eine professionelle Beratung zu ge -währleisten werden für die Workshops gezielt externe Referenten hinzu-gezogen, die in den einzelnen Gebieten Spezialisten sind.
Parallel zu den Workshops finden zwei Beratungstermine in jedem teil-nehmenden Betrieb statt, die das Kernstück des Projektes bilden. Durchdie Beratungsfirma Arqum und die Energieagentur NRW werden dieteilnehmenden Unternehmen bei der Bestandsaufnahme und Aus wer -tung der Verbrauchsdaten sowie bei der Erstellung eines indi vidu ellen,auf das Unternehmen abgestimmten, Nachhaltigkeitspro gramms be -treut und bei der Umsetzung begleitet.
Nach diesem Prozess haben die teilnehmenden Betriebe die Möglichkeitmit dem Label „Partner of Sustainable Bonn“ ausgezeichnet zu werden.
Summary of project activities
In the framework of the project, companies take part in four work-shops in which participants are trained with regard to sustainability-relevant aspects and their practical implementation. Special empha-sis is placed on the subject areas of energy, water, waste, mobilitymanagement, staff motivation and procurement based on criteria ofsustainability. To ensure professional consulting standards, carefullychosen external speakers are called in who are specialists in therespective fields.
Parallel to the workshops, two consultations take place on the com-pany premises. These are the key elements of the project. ArqumConsulting and Energy Agency NRW support participating organisa-tions in the stock-taking and evaluation of consumption data as wellas in developing a specific sustainability programme custom-madefor each company, and supervise its implementation.
On completion of this process, the participating businesses are en -titled to be awarded the label “Partner of Sustainable Bonn”.

Was ist „Sustainable Bonn –
Konferenzort der Nachhaltigkeit“?
Das Projekt „Sustainable Bonn“ wurde im Jahr 2006 von der StadtBonn in Zusammenarbeit mit der Tourismus & Congress GmbHRegion Bonn / Rhein-Sieg / Ahrweiler (T&C) initiiert. Ziel des Projek tesist es Bonn als Konferenzstandort der Nachhaltigkeit zu etablieren.Nachhaltigkeit soll zukünftig nicht nur das zentrale Thema vielerKonferenzen sein, sondern in Alltag und Wirtschaft gelebt werden.
Finanziell gefördert wird das Projekt vom Bundesministerium fürwirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung. Des Weiteren wirddas Projekt von der Kooperationsgemeinschaft „Sustainable BonnPartners“ unterstützt, die Bonn als nachhaltigen Konferenzstandortstärken möchte.
Die Umsetzung und Durchführung von „Sustainable Bonn“ erfolgtdurch die T&C. Aufgrund ihrer Nähe zu Hotel- und Gastronomie be -trieben sowie Kongressveranstaltern und Cateringfirmen bietet dieT&C die ideale Plattform für einen konstruktiven Austausch mit die-sen Branchen.
Fachlich unterstützt wird „Sustainable Bonn“ von der BeratungsfirmaArqum und der Energieagentur NRW.
„Sustainable Bonn“ richtet sich in erster Linie an die Hotellerie, dasCatering- und Konferenzwesen in Bonn und fördert die praxisnaheVerankerung des Prinzips der Nachhaltigkeit mit den Schwer punk ten:
Ökologie: Einsatz von Umwelttechnik und Reduzierung des Verbrauchs an Ressourcen,
Ökonomie: Senkung der Betriebskosten und Einsatz von innovativen Technologien,
Soziales: Erhaltung/Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen und Mitarbeitermotivation
Mit „Sustainable Bonn“ – Konferenzort der Nachhaltigkeit wird durcheine Verbesserung der nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsweise ein effektiverBeitrag zur Umweltentlastung geleistet, soziale Aspekte berücksich-tigt und gleichzeitig wirtschaftlicher Erfolg erzielt.
Insgesamt wird bei den Teilnehmern ein Bewusstsein für die Erfor der-nisse einer weltweit nachhaltigen Entwicklung geschaffen.
„Sustainable Bonn“ ermöglicht bzw. vereinfacht den Einstieg in eineSystematisierung der nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsweise und schafft dieGrundlagen für die Einführung eines Umweltmanagementsystemsim Betrieb.
Der englische Name „Sustainable Bonn“, zu Deutsch „nachhaltigesBonn“, wurde gewählt, da die Initiative für internationale Besucheraus aller Welt zum Begriff und Markenzeichen werden soll.

The project “Sustainable Bonn” was initiated in 2006 by the Cityof Bonn in cooperation with Tourismus & Congress GmbHRegion Bonn / Rhein-Sieg / Ahrweiler (T & C). The purpose of theproject is to position Bonn as conference location of sustainability. Sustai nability is not simply to be the key topic of many confe-rences, but is to be practiced in everyday life and in business andindustry.
Financial assistance to the project was granted by the FederalMinistry for Economic Co-operation and Development. The projectis also supported by a co-operation group, “Sustainable BonnPartners”, with the aim of strengthening Bonn as a conferencelocation of sustainability.
Implementation and management are in the hands of T&C. Dueto its close relations with hotel and restaurant operators as well ascongress organisers and caterers T&C is an ideal platform for aconstructive interchange with these sectors.
Professional support is provided by Arqum Consulting and Energie-Agentur. NRW (Energy Agency Northrhine-Westfalia).
„Sustainable Bonn“ is primarily meant for the hotel, catering andconference trades and aims to establish in daily practice the prin-ciple of sustainability with the emphasis on:
Ecology: employing environmental technologies andreducing consumption of resources,
Economy: diminishing operating costs and employinginnovative technologies,
Human Resources: saving/creating jobs and motivatingemployees.
By enhancing sustainability in business operations, ”SustainableBonn – Conference Location of Sustainability” makes an effectivecontribution to improving the environment, embraces social aspectsand, at the same time, is conducive to business success.
All in all, participants develop an awareness of the requirementsof global sustainable development.
Moreover, a network of politics, business, science, media and cul-ture comes into being which facilitates, or simplifies, the first stepsinto a systematic approach to sustainable business operationsand creates the foundations for introducing an in-company environ-ment management system.
The purpose of choosing the English label “Sustainable Bonn” isto make this initiative an established concept and a trademark forvisitors from all over the world.
