I don?t know about you, but sometimes the way the church year r uns str ikes me as odd. As I w r i te we have just f inished celebrating the bir th of Jesus and yet this month we are prepar ing to r emember his death and resur rection.

Another oddity has come to mind as well . The Nicene Creed, which we occasionally say together in church, says nothing at al l about the l i fe of Jesus: i t jumps str aight from his bir th to his death and resur rection, almost as i f ever ything Jesus said and did was unimpor tant. This isn?t actually the case of course, since that Creed was composed in ver y speci f ic histor ical ci r cumstances to address ver y speci f ic theological concerns; but i t did make me think.

In church we qui te r ightly place a lot of emphasis on the saving death and resur rection of Jesus and upon the spir i tual; but I sometimes wonder i f we think enough about the events in the l i fe of Jesus, of the things he did and said; of the fact that, l ike us, Jesus l ived a human l i fe.

Jesus didn?t just come to teach us how to be spir i tual, he came to teach us how to be tr uly human. When Jesus l ived ful l time on ear th as a human being he not only came and l ived w ith us, but made his home among us, w ith us in joy and sor row, shar ing in the fun of l i fe and i ts di f f iculties, offer ing r est from weight of labour, offer ing food to al l who are hungr y, taking on the dai ly task of l iving in a wor ld where people sadly fal l shor t of al l they could be.

Jesus l ived the per fect human l i fe, and he achieved i t not because he was God incarnate as a human being but because he was ful ly and completely human. Jesus showed us i t is possible to l ive a l i fe of love and self less giving, a l i fe where we put God f i r st, other s second and ourselves last of al l . Many of Jesus? parables and much of his teaching were not just about the spir i tual, but were concerned w ith ever yday l iving and how we tr eat each other.

Lent star ts ear ly in Februar y this year. Of course i t would be good i f you were able to attend the val ley Lent Group which star ts at Timble on 10th Februar y ; but i f you can?t, tr y to use some of your spare time in Lent to r eacquaint yourself w i th the l i fe and teaching of Jesus. When you look at this incredible l i fe and really think about i t, Jesus? death and resur rection becomes even more signi f icant.

Yours in Chr ist,   Rev Rick Ormrod

Dear Fr iends

ANGELS IN ASKWITHAt 7pm on Tuesday Dec 22nd Mar y and Joseph were turned away from the Askw ith arms because there was no room for them. They then made their way to Ibbotson Farm Stable w ith Mar y r iding a donkey. Baby Jesus was born and laid in a manger.

A large crowd of about 70 people assembled in Askw ith Vi l lage Hall where dressing up clothes were avai lable for those who w ished to act the par t. Kather ine and Rober t Marston were Mar y and Joseph and their baby Har r y was Jesus. A ver y vocal donkey also walked to the stable, car r ying Mar y, and joined in w ith the stor y. We had many decorous angels and several not so w ise men and plenty of shepherds. Graham and Jul ie Shield were the nar rator s and led the carol singing.

We then returned to the Askw ith Arms for supper, generously provided by the pub, and more carols.

I t proved to be a ver y happy evening and Graham and Jul ie, along w ith the Marston family, are to be congratulated for organising such a memorable event.

Best w ishes,

Mar y

Askw ith w ith Weston WI had a ver y successful year in 2015. We had lots of events including tr ips to the Grand in Leeds to see the ballet, and of course, The Gir ls. We had a lovely tr ip to Amplefor th Abbey where we sampled beverages made from the many types of apples they cultivate there. We helped w ith the teas for Askw ith Open Gardens, and had a wonder ful visi t to Castle Howard dur ing December to see the magnif icent Chr istmas decorations w ith lunch at Helmsley after wards.

Our President visi ted Walesby Forest in Nottinghamshire to enjoy crafts and events under the ti tle of Tea and Tents which for adventure, fr iendship, learning new crafts w ith other members. We also had a great evening out dur ing December for our annual WI dinner.

To open 2016 Bobby Mi l ler, one of our members, gave a ver y interesting and informative talk enti tled Quar r y Ar ts ?musical rocks?. We were al l enthral led w ith her demonstration of musical notes which came from the rocks. Bobby is involved w ith Yorkshir e Quar r y Ar ts which was established in the Univer si ty of Leeds in 2003 and funded by the Minerals Industr y Research organisation. I ts activi ties were developed w ith Funding from Natural England through to Defra?s Aggregates Levy Sustainabi l i ty Fund to create novel l i tho-phones which were instal led at Brantwood in the Lake Distr ict in 2010 and now operates as in independent not-for -prof i t network.

Quar r y Ar ts has an innovative and unique approach to informing the public about quar r ies and the aggregate and concrete industr ies through focusing on the beauty of the quar r ied landscape and i ts geology to inspir e creative and per forming ar ts activi ties. Bobby is par ticular ly interested in the music created from r inging rocks, the rocks, which were sourced from local l imestone, slate and greywake, are found in Cumbr ia and Nor th Yorkshir e. Bobby demonstrated a magical sound from her rocks and explained how she painstakingly smoothed and cut them into shape.

We were invi ted to ?play? them later and i t was interesting to hear how each one made a di f ferent sound, some quite dul l and low, other s w ith qui te a high pi tch.

Let Me Tell You A Stor y Once upon a time (last May) a community far, far away (in Askw ith) came together to celebrate farming and farmers and bless some new cow sheds for the cubicles and mi lking par lour. Such was the r ejoicing, despite the cold w ind, (but probably helped by Prosecco) that many folk said ?when can we do this again??

Lo, after many months, meetings and conversations, the time ar r ived. People gathered in the Vi l lage Hall for The Nativi ty Walk in expectation and wonder ? would there be a donkey, would Mar tin be the only Wiseman in Askw ith, would Lyn be the only Angel, would Malcolm be the only Shepherd to watch his f lock that night?

Well, as between 60 and 70 folk can confi rm, the answers were, yes, no, no, and no! The star of the evening was Molly the donkey (thanks to the Barker fami ly). She brayed ever yone to order at 7 pm from the back door of the Hall and, as she looked over a gate into the Stable, brayed a ?don?t forget me? as Jul ie thanked ever yone for making the night so special, at about 8 pm.

With lanterns, tor ches and hi vis vests and jackets we fol lowed Molly, w i th Mar y on her back and Joseph at her side, 2 by 2 from Joseph?s workshop and Mar y?s ki tchen in Nazereth, to the Inn at Bethlehem and then the Stable at Ibbotson?s Farm. Baby Jesus was so sti l l that some people thought that Har r y was a doll ! One angel added to the evening i l luminations by having f lashing l ights over her costume (thanks Hazel).

What a way to br ing the Nativi ty Stor y and Carols to l i fe and to give them new meaning.

Thanks to ever yone who took par t, and especial ly to the Marston?s for clear ing out the shed, f ixing the doors and getting a manger, star and night sky backdrop, and to Howard, Andrea, Olivia and Jess for br inging Molly. Also thanks to Jak and the Askw ith Arms team for welcoming us w ith Shepherd?s pie and veg, mulled w ine and a selection box for each chi ld (about 20) and to Ann Cayton at the Chr istian Resource Hub in Otley for sor ting out the costumes and props.

What next?

Graham

THIS repor t has come from Canon John White to the Magazine. On a wet Januar y 2 the family of Rosemar y White came from around the countr y to St Oswald's, Leathley for prayer before laying her ashes to r est in the grave she now shares w ith her husband Canon Frank White, Rector of Leathley w ith Farnley 1972-79.

My mother came from Hali fax and met my father when he was curate there. They mar r ied as soon as the war ended and spent many happy years in Wakefield Diocese.    They enjoyed adapting to a more r ural way of l i fe in Leathley, quickly making fr iends.  My mother joined the WI, tended the r ector y garden and took a ful l par t in vi l lage activi ties.

Together they produced a fr ee newsheet on an old duplicator which went to al l r esidents.   For a time Rosemar y was president of the Bradford Diocesan Mothers Union.

The rector y was a welcoming home to fami ly, fr iends and par ishioners. Both my sister s Cather ine and Elizabeth were mar r ied in St Oswald's in 1974 and 1976.

Mother and father left in 1979 to a well earned reti r ement in Hubberholme and Skipton. Father died in 1986.   After many years on her ow n in Skipton and latter ly in War w ickshir e Rosemar y died aged 93 after suffer ing from leukaemia and losing her sight.   She bore her i l lness w ith her usual courage and str ength of character.

They now l ie together in the peace of Leathley churchyard.   Our thanks to warden Rita Swallow and husband David for making us al l so welcome on a day of sadness but also thanksgiving for her l i fe.

Celebrating 895,000 Shoebox Gifts We are

delighted to share that your church contr ibuted to us being able to send over 895,000 shoebox gi f ts from the UK in 2015. Globally, we delivered over 11.2 mi l l ion shoeboxes, w ith many being given to chi ldren cur rently l iving in r efugee camps

Hundreds of churches and individuals lovingly packed these gi f ts, whi lst thousands of dedicated volunteers careful ly checked and prayed over each one. That is an amazing effor t that we would never have accomplished w ithout your involvement ? you were an integral par t of this campaign and for that we want to thank you! Daniel Str acinski , our CONNECT Prayer Co-ordinator for the OCC Team in Montenegro, tel ls us of the impact these gi f ts have on a community.

"The children were very happy; one boy opened his shoebox and found a Frisbee. He started jumping, running around, calling his friends and showing everyone. Another boy took out a cap and gloves from his shoebox and put them on for everyone to see. It was such a special time for that small town and school in a remote mountain area."

Many churches and individuals in the UK also gave generously towards The Greatest Journey project alongside their shoebox gi f ts. This w i l l enable our par tner churches around the wor ld to tr ain local teachers.  They in turn offer a course of 12 fun and engaging lessons to chi ldren who received shoeboxes to f ind out more about Jesus.  Over £74,000 was given, ensur ing that 18,000 chi ldren w i l l get to go on The Greatest Journey.

Please pray w ith us for these chi ldren and for God?s blessing on the local church overseas as they bui ld r elationships w ithin their communities. As you share this stor y w ith your church family ? be encouraged that through a simple shoebox gi f t, this can be the star t of a chi ld?s greatest journey in learning about Jesus.

Ser ving Chr ist together, Nick Cole, UK Director Operation Chr istmas Chi ld

In October and November across the Washburn and Mid-Whar fe area we col lected 75 boxes, which is dow n on the last two years. I?ve invi ted Maureen Walsh from Otley to speak at the United Ser vice on 30th October. Not only has Maureen been involved locally w ith the Samar i tans Purse Operation Chr istmas Chi ld, but she has been abroad w ith the boxes and w i l l show us what happens when the boxes leave the depot.

Thanks to al l who?ve helped br ing a smi le to chi ld at Chr istmas.                  Graham Shield
